Contraband cigarettes, liquor worth over RM560,000 seized in Miri
KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) in Sarawak busted a contraband stash of untaxed cigarettes and hard liquor worth more than RM566,000 during an operation in Miri on Wednesday (April 16).
Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said that in the 8.30 am operation, a team of Customs officers from the Land Operations Unit conducted a raid on a container in the Eastwood Valley Industrial Estate area.
'An inspection of the locked container uncovered 700,000 sticks of various brands of white cigarettes without tax stamps, along with 1,536 litres of alcoholic beverages suspected to be contraband,' he said.
'The estimated value of the seized items is RM74,372, while the total duties and taxes involved is RM492,319.20. The overall estimated value of the confiscated goods, including duties and taxes, amounts to RM566,691.20,' he said in a statement today.
Norizan added that the syndicate's modus operandi involved using the container as a storage space for cigarettes and alcoholic beverages to evade detection by the authorities.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. If found guilty, the offenders could face a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

MR says High Court ruling is a relief after lengthy trial
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysia Rugby (MR) staff member Murni Azlina Yurdeksi has been ordered by the High Court to pay RM4.9 million in damages to the national body. In its ruling on March 4, the court found Murni Azlina liable for breach of trust, fraud and conversion, and ordered her to pay RM4,923,468.07 within 14 days. An annual interest of five per cent was to apply from March 13, 2023, until the full amount is paid. In 2022, MR discovered that a substantial sum of money was allegedly siphoned from its bank account by an administrative staff member. It is alleged that the staff member, who handled MR's accounts, had forged the signatures of both the MR president and treasurer to make cash withdrawals dating back to 2019. Fahmy said MR had since strengthened its financial procedures to prevent similar incidents. "We used to have four bank accounts, but we've closed three and now only maintain one. We've also reduced cheque usage and switched to online banking, which allows for better monitoring of our funds," he said.

Johor Customs thwarts bid to smuggle nearly RM1 million worth of drugs using courier service
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor branch of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) thwarted an attempt by a drug distribution syndicate using a courier service to smuggle drugs, weighing 10.194 kilogrammes, and worth RM955,687, here in April. Its director, Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said that in an operation conducted at 3.35 pm on April 23, the enforcement team inspected two suspicious parcels from Hong Kong at a mail and courier centre here. 'The results of the inspection on each box found two packets of candy placed on top of a white bottle containing a black liquid. 'Initial tests on the black liquid revealed a type of morphine,' he said at a press conference here today. Aminul Izreer said the two boxes were addressed to a named person at a double-storey terrace house in Pulai, Johor, and the packages were declared as food items. However, the ownership status of the house is still under investigation, and efforts to track down the syndicate and the owner of the parcels are being actively carried out. He also said that this year alone, five cases of drug trafficking using couriers have been recorded in the state, and these cases also involved drugs such as marijuana. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

RM955k morphine busted: Drug syndicate foiled at Johor courier hub
JOHOR BARU: The Customs Department foiled an attempt by a drug syndicate to smuggle more than RM955,000 worth of morphine via courier services, following the interception of two suspicious parcels. Johor Customs director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said the seizure was made by a team from the department's Narcotics Branch after a thorough inspection at a Pos Laju office here at 3.35pm on April 23. "Initial checks revealed that the parcels had been sent from Hong Kong to a residential address in Pulai," he told a press conference today. He said each box contained two packets of sweets placed on top of a white bottle filled with a dark-coloured liquid. "Preliminary testing of the liquid confirmed it to be morphine," he said. Aminul said the department was working to identify members of the syndicate and trace the intended recipient of the parcels. He said that this was the sixth case this year involving attempts to smuggle drugs using courier services. "Previous seizures using similar methods involved drugs such as cannabis, sent from countries including Thailand and Vietnam," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
