Day 1 training camp medical updates after 1st Lions practice

USA Today6 days ago
Dan Campbell's first press conference of training camp dropped a bombshell regarding Levi Onwuzurike. Here are my quick takeaways, along with some Campbell quotes.
Levi Onwuzurike (27yo) - ACL surgery, out for season
When he was placed on reserve PUP, the implication was that the injury was very significant. Now we know some of the details.
Campbell intriguingly stated that the ACL surgery "needed to be done" which would not even be a question with a straightforward, complete ACL tear. Maybe this was a partial ACL tear which may or may not necessitate surgery.
The timing of the injury as well as the surgery are unknown, but would be fascinating to know. He was playing with a right knee brace at the end of last season which could be relevant.
The Lions signed him to a modest 1-year deal in March so there was clearly no concern from the team at that time. Presumably the injury happened after he signed his deal, but this isn't certain.
On the bright side, the injury is not related to his L5-S1 lumbar fusion of which he has made a remarkable recovery from.
OUTLOOK: An ACL has a very reliable recovery, but takes about 11 months to return to play. He should be ready for next season if this is an uncomplicated ACL repair.
From a team standpoint, the Lions were counting on him, as they gave him $3.5 million guaranteed this year. With already many other active health concerns at the DT position, the loss of Onwuzurike could have a major impact on the season.
Taylor Decker (32yo at start of season) - PUP, shoulder cleanup
"There's a good chance we can get him back after the Hall-of-Fame game [July 31]"
Campbell stated it was a shoulder cleanup and implied it wasn't too concerning.
Last year, Decker missed a game due to a rotator cuff which could be relevant. I did not see video evidence of the injury. He also had a right pec strain a couple weeks prior to the rotator cuff issue. In 2017, Decker had shoulder labrum surgery.
He was a full participant at OTA in June so it's possible something happened at that time.
OUTLOOK: It sounds like Decker will be fine in the short term. Notably, this is the second straight offseason that he's had a significant surgery (toe sesamoidectomy, ankle deltoid, bone spurs), so the wear on his body is starting to accumulate.
Josh Paschal (25yo) - NFI, unspecified cleanup
"Probably Labor Day we can start working him into practice."
Campbell described it as a cleanup but no specific body part was mentioned. Paschal was limited at June OTA, so it's possible this issue was present back then.
Paschal is on NFI (non-football injury) which implies that the injury occurred during personal time. He missed two games last season with a shoulder mass excision, and it's unknown if that's related.
OUTLOOK: This is a fairly significant issue considering he's still at least six weeks away - and may have been injured for many weeks already. His recovery from this injury and performance this season will be something to keep an eye on.
Players not practicing
These players were noted by Campbell as not practicing. Since they aren't on PUP/NFI, presumably the injuries, if any, are minimal. Campbell scoffed at the suggestion that Anzalone was a "hold-in", but this remains a distinct possibility.
Players on PUP/NFI who were not mentioned
In other news from the first day of practice...
Ennis Rakestraw - Chest injury
The mechanism was described by Nolan Bianchi as a collision which hopefully means it's just a simple contusion. Jeff Risdon described it as being "tied up" with a receiver, which would be a bit more concerning for a strain or tear. Body parts in the chest area include the pec, ribs, clavicle, lungs, and SC joint.

Lions vs Australia: Second Test kick-off time, TV channel, live stream, team news, lineups, h2h, odds today

The British & Irish Lions can this morning seal a series win as they take on Australia in the second Test in Melbourne. Andy Farrell's side appeared to be on course for a record win in Brisbane last weekend when they took a 24-5 lead early in the second half, but the Wallabies responded well to keep it competitive for much of the second Lions, though, were still comfortable in winning 27-19 and it means they can wrap up the series with a match to spare as the two sides resume battle at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A 2-1 victory over Australia in 2013 remains the only series the Lions have won since the turn of the century and this current squad will be desperate to keep their bid for a 3-0 whitewash on track. Having beaten the First Nations and Pasifika XV in midweek, the Lions have now won all seven matches they have played on Australian soil. They are looking to become the first Lions side to go unbeaten overseas in a tour since the 1974 squad did so in South Africa. Joe Schmidt's side, though, will have taken encouragement from their second-half display in the first Test and know they will have the momentum if they can force a series decider in Sydney next week. Lions vs Australia date, kick-off time and venue The Second Test between the Lions and Australia takes place on Saturday July 26, 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 11am BST. That is 8pm local time. The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the match, with more than 90,000 fans expected to be in attendance. How to watch Lions vs Australia TV channel: Live coverage of the Second Test is available via Sky Sports, who have exclusive broadcasting rights to the Lions tour in the UK this summer. Their broadcast starts at 9:30am BST on Saturday morning on both Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action. Live stream: Fans with a Sky Sports subscription can also watch the Second Test live online via the Sky Go app, while it's available to stream via NOW. Live blog: Follow the Second Test action with Standard Sport's live blog. Lions vs Australia team news Garry Ringrose has withdrawn from the Lions side after feeling the effects of concussion in training. Sione Tuipulotu has a tight hamstring, as Bundee Aki comes in at centre to partner Huw Jones as one of nine Irishmen in the starting XV. There is no change at full-back or on the wings, with Hugo Keenan, Tommy Freeman and James Lowe keeping their places, and Finn Russell is again at fly-half. Farrell has made a big call at loosehead, preferring Andrew Porter to Ellis Genge from the start, and Ollie Chessum comes in to replace in the injured Joe McCarthy at lock. Owen Farrell impressed in the midweek fixture and makes the bench to cover fly-half and centre, with Blair Kinghorn and Jac Morgan also among the replacements. Australia are significantly boosted by the return to the starting lineup of lock Will Skelton and flanker Rob Valetini. The pair both missed the first Test with calf injuries but have recovered and come straight back into the side in Melbourne. Dave Porecki starts at hooker, while Langi Gleeson is fit again after injury and is named on the bench. With Noah Lolesio missing the series due to injury, Tom Lynagh keeps his place at fly-half after making his first start last weekend. Lions vs Australia lineups British & Irish Lions: Keenan; Freeman, Jones, Aki, Lowe; Russell, Gibson-Park; Porter, Sheehan, Furlong, Itoje (capt), Chessum, Beirne, Curry, Conan. Replacements: Kelleher, Genge, Stuart, Ryan, Morgan, Mitchell, Farrell, Kinghorn. Australia: Wright; Jorgensen, Suaalii, Ikitau, Potter; Lynagh, Gordon; Slipper, Porecki, Alaalatoa, Frost, Skelton, Valetini, McReight, Wilson (capt). Replacements: Pollard, Bell, Robertson, Williams, Gleeson, Tizzano, McDermott, Donaldson. Lions vs Australia head to head (h2h) history and results The Lions have won seven of the nine series they have played in Australia, with the only exceptions coming in 1930 and 2001. Lions wins: 18 Australia wins: 6 Draws: 0 Lions vs Australia prediction The first Test, and indeed the series, looked like being a bit of a blowout for just over half of last week's match in Brisbane. The Lions were dominant physically and, led by some Russell inspiration, cut the Australian defence open almost at will. But Australia fought back in the second half and can take that into this match, and the availability of Skelton and Valetini is a major boost to the Wallabies pack. Farrell's decision to drop Genge to the bench suggests he wants more of an impact off the bench but that comes at a risk, with Australia potentially able to get more of a foothold in the match from the start. Both sides will believe they can be better than last week but the Lions should be confident of coming out on top, with a gulf in class evident in Brisbane. With the motivation of a series win being on the line, the Lions can be expected to keep their feet on the gas this week and they should leave themselves on the verge of a 3-0 whitewash. Lions to win by 12 points. Lions vs Australia match odds Lions to win: 2/9 Australia to win: 7/2 Draw: 22/1 Odds via Betfair (subject to change).

Eagles' training camp: Takeaways and observations from Day 3 of practice

With Day 3 of Philadelphia Eagles' practice completed, we're looking at takeaways and observations from Saturday's session After a Friday morning walkthrough, the Eagles returned to the NovaCare Complex practice field for their third session of training camp. The morning saw Jihaad Campbell make another charge towards the starting lineup, while Jalen Hurts wasn't his most impressive. The session also saw Kenyon Green get in his first practice of the summer, while Jalen Carter missed his third straight day. With Day 3 of practice completed, we're looking at five standouts from Saturday's session. Jalen Hurts' uneven performance Saturday wasn't the most efficient for the quarterback, but the practice reps are about getting acquainted with Kevin Patullo as a player caller. Jihaad Campbell first team reps It's just day three of practice, but Campbell looks sharp, he looks injury-free, and he's getting first-team reps alongside Zack Baun. Campbell has been learning both inside linebacker positions. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is staying in the fight Once thought of as the potential third quarterback following the Eagles' trading Kenny Pickett to Cleveland, Thompson-Robinson has battled rookie Kyle McCord for that spot and had his best practice of the summer. Kelee Ringo baptism by fire The talented cornerback is in a roster battle with Adoree Jackson and has been getting baptized on the outside by A.J. Brown over the first three days. The treatment continued on Saturday. Moro Ojomo continues to impress Ojomo continues to impress and continues to pressure the quarterback and collapse the pockets. Eagles added a new wrinkle Philadelphia could be even stronger in the secondary thanks to the unique versatility of cornerback Cooper DeJean and safety Andrew Mukuba. On Saturday, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio placed the duo in a DIME package, with the Swiss army knives in the slot. Jihaad Campbell could make Zack Baun even more dangerous. Zack Baun was initially signed by Philadelphia last off-season to add pass rush prowess and versatility to the Eagles' defense. Baun went on to become a Defensive Player of the Year finalist. The Eagles selected Jihaad Campbell in the draft, and he's been working out at both inside linebacker positions. Campbell learning Baun's spot could provide Philadelphia with a scenario where Nakobe Dean or Jeremiah Trotter Jr. plays the other linebacker spot alongside Campbell, allowing Baun to rush the passer more in 2025.

No. 1 recruit in women's basketball signs with USC

It isn't just the USC Trojans football team which is surging with a recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the country in 2026. The USC women's basketball team is also getting top recruits. Juju Watkins is almost a lock to be the No. 1 overall pick in the (2027) WNBA draft even after recovering from her season-ending injury. Now the Trojans have two other top recruits in their class to take over the mantle. Here is Rivals writer Talia Goodman's breakdown on the Trojans striking gold with Saniyah Hall: "Saniyah Hall, the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class, has committed to the USC Trojans. The 6-2 combo guard from Lorain (OH) previously took official visits to both North Carolina and UCLA. Hall played for the USA U19 team this year and averaged 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, two assists, 2.9 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Hall made her announcement on NBA Today this Friday. She started her high school career at Laurel (OH) before transferring to Montverde last season. Hall averaged 20.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.4 blocks a game last season, leading Montverde to a 26-2 record. She recently announced that she'll be returning to Ohio to finish her high school career at SPIRE Academy. "USC has now landed three No. 1 recruits in the country in the last four years. The Trojans landed JuJu Watkins in 2023, Jazzy Davidson in 2025 and now Hall." USC is already one of the more well known programs for college football, but with its recruiting track record the last couple years, the Trojans could become a women's basketball powerhouse school. Next year the Trojans will have an insane three No. 1 recruited players on the court at the same time. Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb will have extremely high expectations following her and the Trojans this season if they get back Juju Watkins. That point aside, USC just might be the very, very early favorite for the 2027 national championship.
