Invasive golden mussels found on boat during Lake Tahoe inspection
ALPINE MEADOWS – Invasive golden mussels were intercepted during an inspection at a Lake Tahoe-area station, making it the first time golden mussels were intercepted in the area, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency said.
The golden mussels were found on a 65-foot vessel that went through the Alpine Meadows inspection station on Friday. That boat will be held under quarantine until officials deem it risk-free.
"Golden mussels pose an extreme threat to Lake Tahoe and the waters of the region and it is critical that everyone stay vigilant and always Clean, Drain, and Dry all watercraft and equipment when visiting new areas," said Dennis Zabaglo, the aquatic invasive species program manager for the TRPA.

Since March, all boats that enter the waters of Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake and Echo Lake must go through an inspection procedure. The TRPA said if the golden mussels enter the lake, they could "irreversibly harm Lake Tahoe's recreation, water quality, and native ecosystem."
This comes after golden mussels were discovered at the Port of Stockton, marking the first such discovery in North America.
The TRPA says the farthest south that golden mussels have been detected in California is Bakersfield.
Some areas, such as Folsom Lake, mandate that boats must go through a 30-day quarantine before entering the water.

Now Playing runs in the background and uses on-device machine learning to automatically identify music. However, the company is working on a Now Playing Quick Settings tile that would let users manually identify a track. Google has offered Now Playing functionality on Pixel phones for years now, using on-device machine learning to passively identify music playing around you. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. Google currently offers Now Playing as a passive feature on Pixel phones, automatically displaying the currently playing track on your lock screen and in the Now Playing history page in the settings menu. There's no proper way to manually identify a track, though. One workaround is to use the song search functionality in the Google app, which can be accessed in several ways (e.g. a quick settings tile or after tapping the microphone icon in the app). Unlike Now Playing, though, this solution requires an internet connection. Furthermore, tracks identified by the Google app aren't added to your device's Now Playing history, although they are stored in your Google account. Fortunately, an Android Authority teardown of the Android System Intelligence suite ( has revealed that Google is working on a Now Playing tile in the Quick Settings panel. We partially enabled this feature, and you can view it in the screenshots below. As the screenshots show, tapping the Now Playing tile allows you to manually identify a track while also producing a 'searching for song…' notification. We weren't able to get this feature working properly, but we're guessing the track info will eventually be displayed in a notification too. In any event, this would be a long-overdue addition to Now Playing on Pixel phones. We previously reported that many Pixel owners were having trouble getting Now Playing to work, so manually invoking the feature would be a welcome alternative to automatic detection. Man found shot to death behind Orange County liquor store
A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found shot to death behind a liquor store in Orange County on Sunday, police confirmed to KTLA. It happened before 5 p.m., according to the Santa Ana Police Department, outside of a strip mall on the intersection of Newhope and 1st streets. Police responded to reports of a shooting victim down behind Bottle Liquor and Spirit, located at 4502 W. 1st St. Officers arrived to find a man, estimated to be in his mid-40s, suffering from one gunshot wound. Authorities did not specify where the bullet wound was on the man's body. Details are limited, but officials ultimately pronounced the man dead at the scene. Footage from showed a large law enforcement presence at the scene, with multiple cruisers and yellow crime scene tape cordoning off the area around the liquor store. Santa Ana PD posted a public advisory to X at 5:47 p.m., saying, 'Police Activity: In the area of 1st Street and Newhope Street. Please stay away from the area.' Just before 6:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the police department told KTLA that authorities were waiting to have the coroner's office come out to verify whether the man's death was the result of a homicide or if it was self-inflicted. Shark attacks Montara State Beach surfer, chomps board
The Brief A surfer was attacked by a shark about 100 yards off of Montara State Beach in San Mateo County. The man was unhurt, though his surfboard was left with deep bite marks. The beach was set to remain closed for at least 48 hours following the attack, according to California State Parks SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. - A surfer survived a close encounter with a shark just off Montara State Beach over the weekend, though his equipment wasn't so fortunate. The encounter Jens Heller paddled out from the beach on Saturday afternoon and was sitting on his board out on the water when he said he felt something brush against his leg. The next thing he knew, he was in the ocean. When he surfaced and looked back, he said all he could see was a black eye over a huge mouth chomping down on his surfboard. Heller said he snatched his board and made it back to shore as quickly as he could. Two other surfers were in the water with him at the time, and followed suit when they saw the attack. Once they all reached safety, one of the other surfers told Heller that he estimated the shark to be about 10-feet long. Heller said he only saw its face, and adrenaline precluded any further analysis. Heller told his story to Powerlines Productions – a Half Moon Bay-based show that has documented "the surfing stroke and lifestyle" since the 1980's. On the show, he displayed deep bite marks on both sides of his surfboard. Heller himself, however, was completely unhurt in the ordeal. The official account Adeline Lee of California State Parks confirmed to KTVU that lifeguards and peace officers responded about 2 p.m. on Saturday to Montara State Beach on reports of a non-injury shark attack that occurred about 100 yards offshore. Responders learned of the surfboard that had "sustained damage consistent with a shark bite," which prompted lifeguards to immediately clear the water and close the beach with shark closure signage, Lee said.
