Regina Pats draft Maddox Schultz with No. 1 pick in WHL draft

Yahoo08-05-2025

The Regina Pats have officially landed top prospect Maddox Schultz.
With the first overall selection in Wednesday night's Western Hockey League draft, the Pats selected Schultz, a 15-year-old Regina product who led the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA League in scoring last season.
Along with posting 93 points in 44 regular season games to lead the league in scoring as an underage player, Schultz — the league's MVP and rookie of the year — recorded 22 points in 10 playoff games to lead the Pat Canadians to a league title.
From there, the 5-foot-10, 165-pounder led Regina to a West regional championship and Telus Cup berth, before scoring the winning goal in overtime of the national final. In the national championship, Schultz led all skaters with 20 points in seven games and was named tournament MVP despite being the youngest player in the event.

While Schultz didn't apply for exceptional status to play in the WHL full-time as a 15-year-old next season, under the Western Canadian Development Model, he is still eligible to play 34 games with the Pats in 2025-26. It's also expected the young phenom Schultz will continue to play at the U18 level with the Pat Canadians.
'It's something you dream of,' Schultz told the WHL's draft livestream. 'Growing up watching this team play … it's a dream come true.
'I'm just really looking forward to getting started with the Pats.'
Moments after drafting Schultz first overall, the Pats made a trade acquiring the third overall pick from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a second-round pick, 26th overall, this year along with a 2026 first-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick.
And with the third pick, Regina drafted forward Liam Pue, a Langley, B.C. product who, like Schultz, was one of three players eligible in the draft who played at the U18 level last season.

In 29 games with the Langley Hockey Academy U18 squad, Pue, 15, had 30 goals and 20 assists for 50 points to finish second in the Junior Prospects Hockey League (JPHL) scoring race.
'It's not everyday you get a chance to get two exceptional status players,' Pats assistant general manager Dale Derkatch told the livestream.
As Schultz, he's the third player in franchise history to be taken first overall joining Connor Bedard in 2020 and Colton Tuebert in 2005. And during the WHL's draft livestream, Bedard had a message for Schultz.
'You're going to be a special player and you'll love your time there,' Bedard said on video to Schultz. 'Tremendous organization to be part of and the fans will embrace you and it's going to be a blast.'
Additionally, the Pats also hold the 23rd overall pick in the first round after acquiring the selection from the Everett Silvertips.

On Thursday, rounds two through 15 of the prospects draft will be held with Regina having two selections in the second round (27th and 46th) before picking again in the fourth (89th) and twice more in the sixth and seventh rounds. From there, the Pats hold single picks in rounds eighth through 15.
Expansion draft
While the Pats will add some new prospects to the roster this week, they also lost a player in the system as forward Corban Almen was selected by the Penticton Vees in Wednesday's expansion draft.
Almen, a 17-year-old Saskatoon product, played 12 games for the Pats last year before joining the BCHL's Vernon Vipers. He then ended the season back in Saskatchewan with the under-18 Saskatoon Blazers AAA squad. In 2023-24, Almen played 54 games and had 14 points in his rookie WHL season with the Pats.
The expansion Vees, who are joining the WHL after playing Jr. A in B.C., were able to select one player from each WHL club for a total of 22 picks. The Pats were able to protect up to 16 players aged 17 to 20 along with six players on the team's college list.
U.S. priority draft
On Thursday, prior to round two of the prospects draft commencing, the WHL will hold the U.S. priority draft with the Pats holding the 12th and 32nd overall selections.

Players eligible for this draft including 2010-born prospects who have lived in the United States for two or more consecutive hockey seasons prior to 2025. Players must reside in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington or Wyoming to be eligible.
CHL Import Draft
The Canadian Hockey League import draft is set for July 2nd and the implications will be heightened this year.
Beginning next season, CHL teams will be permitted to play an additional import player, moving the total allowed from two to three. With this change, the CHL has added an extra round to the draft this year as well.
The Pats will have the fourth overall pick this year in the first round, followed by the 68th overall pick in the second round and 129th overall pick in the third round.
And heading into the 2025-26 season, the Pats will have all three import spots open as last year's lone import, goaltender Ewan Huet, is turning pro next season and is not expected back in Regina.
In 2024, Regina drafted Czech forward Vaclav Nestrasil with the eighth overall pick. Last season, the 2025 NHL draft prospect played in the USHL and is committed to the University of Massachusetts for the 2026-27 season.
The Moose Jaw Warriors have the first overall pick in the CHL import draft.

The wait is over. Now does signing Aaron Rodgers make the Pittsburgh Steelers contenders in the AFC North?

The wait is over. Now does signing Aaron Rodgers make the Pittsburgh Steelers contenders in the AFC North? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Future Hall of Famer and free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers has put an end to this offseason's most grueling waiting game by confirming that he plans to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport report that Rodgers will sign a one-year contract that an NFL source has suggested to us might be valued in the $30 million range. He is expected fly to Pittsburgh soon and participate in the upcoming mandatory minicamp next week. The Steelers front office now sees their patience and optimism pay off as they completely built their NFL Draft plan based on the assumption that Rodgers would sign and allow them to target other needs outside of a quarterback ... although they only had Mason Rudolph on contract. Pittsburgh would ultimately draft Will Howard as well, but they now fall down the depth chart to back up the four-time MVP. Rodgers enters the AFC North with the opportunity to draw the Steelers closer to contention with the Baltimore Ravens for the division crown. Last season, the Steelers finished second with a 10-7 record - two games behind the division champion Ravens. The 41-year-old is coming off a lousy 2024 campaign with the New York Jets, but with a better supporting cast and new environment to ease his mental state (as best it can), hopefully Rodgers' play will see a bit of resurgence. Advertisement He joins forces with star receiver DK Metcalf and tight end Pat Freiermuth as solid receiving targets along with an eclectic group of pass catchers in Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods to work with. Rookie running back Kaleb Johnson may start after Najee Harris left in free agency, so the pass game quickly turns into the Steelers expected identity rather than the run with an inexperienced ball carrier. Pittsburgh likely still prefers their chances this season with Rodgers much more than last year's cycle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields under center, despite the team's moderate success. The end-of-season collapse, however, was especially disappointing. Rodgers' veteran experience could alleviate any of that worry this year. Advertisement The Steelers finished with a 3-3 record in the division during the regular season - beating and losing to each team once. In the Wild Card round of the playoffs, their season came to an end against Baltimore, losing 28-14. The Ravens enter 2025 just as much of a threat as in years past and will remain the Steelers toughest competition in the division. Their Week 11 meeting, an 18-16 Pittsburgh win, was thanks to the heroics of kicker Chris Boswell who accounted for all of the scoring on six field goals. More offensive firepower with Rodgers at the helm should help eliminate low-scoring affairs like this one and many of the Steelers' losses. Having big showings against the division will be extra crucial in revamping this offense's reputation. The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to return many of their offensive weapons as well, with the trio of Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins all on new contracts. Their defense, however, offered little to worry about outside of pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is angrily waiting on a deal of his own. If Cincy has any hopes of rebounding from their 9-8 season, Hendrickson is a huge part of that. Advertisement Pittsburgh put on a clinic in their first meeting with Cincinnati, but as the story of the season was, the consistency pendulum swung the opposite way the second time around. The Cleveland Browns are again expected to be the bottom dwellers in the AFC North, as they have an even more controversial quarterback situation than Pittsburgh this offseason. Last season faired decently well for the Steelers, but the addition of Rodgers and Metcalf provide a major shake-up to the offense that head coach Mike Tomlin should be more confident in this season against the AFC North. Is it enough to win the division? May be too early to tell. Advertisement But it's certainly a step in the right direction. Finally. Four-Team Kevin Durant Trade Idea Sends Suns Star to West Contender

Four-Team Kevin Durant Trade Idea Sends Suns Star to West Contender originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns are expected to trade Kevin Durant this offseason after missing the playoffs and the play-in tournament this season. Advertisement Mike Budenholzer was fired by the Suns as head coach after just one season in the desert. Shams Charania of ESPN is reporting that Phoenix will hire Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as its next head coach. Devin Booker was involved in the Suns' coaching search, but Durant wasn't because the two-time Finals MVP likely won't be on the team next season. With Durant trade rumors heating up, Sam Quinn of CBS Sports proposed the following trade idea between the Suns, Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets: Suns get: Julius Randle, Mike Conley, Goga Bitadze, Terrence Shannon Jr., No. 25 pick Advertisement Magic get: Donte DiVincenzo Timberwolves get: Kevin Durant Nets get: Gary Harris, No. 46 pick This NBA trade idea has Kevin Durant going from Phoenix to Minnesota. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images Durant and Anthony Edwards were teammates on Team USA last summer. Edwards has said multiple times that Durant is his favorite player of all time. Durant turns 37 in the fall. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Suns this season while shooting 52.7% from the field, 43.0% from 3 and 83.9% from the free-throw line. One of the top players in NBA history, Durant has career averages of 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and Suns. He won two rings and two Finals MVPs with the Warriors. Advertisement "This would, in essence, be Minnesota trading the depth that was so significant to its last two playoff pushes to upgrade Randle into Durant," Quinn wrote. "Doing so would have still been obvious in February. Now, after Randle finished the season strong (before the Thunder series, at least), it's more of a question."But, ultimately, the price here is so low that they'd have to pull the trigger. "Edwards idolized Durant growing up. They played together on Team USA. This trade would as much be about appeasing their best player as it would be competing. Of course, it helps on the contention front as well." According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Timberwolves contacted an Eastern Conference team to help facilitate a Durant trade in February. Minnesota lost in the conference finals again this year, so the franchise may look to trade for Durant once again this offseason. Steelers receive bad news regarding free agent WR Gabe Davis

Steelers receive bad news regarding free agent WR Gabe Davis The Steelers' search for a veteran wide receiver continues, as a prominent insider provided some troubling news regarding free agent Gabe Davis — who met with Pittsburgh on Thursday. On Friday's Good Morning Football, insider Ian Rapoport alluded to potential health concerns that are holding up the deal: 'They hosted Gabe Davis for a visit,' Rapoport stated. 'Not quite ready — health-wise — yet.' Davis tore his meniscus in Week 11 of the 2024 season and was released by the Jaguars this past May. The initial report that Davis would meet with Pittsburgh on Thursday had Steelers fans hopeful the team would finally add a veteran WR presence — but for now, a signing may not be in the cards. The arrival of Aaron Rodgers, while polarizing, brings a spark to the Steelers offense — and providing any additional weapons for the four-time MVP to utilize in 2025 is the best path forward. But with Davis' injury concerns preventing a deal, who should Pittsburgh target next? For up-to-date Steelers coverage, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like.
