NHL Mock Draft 2025: Schaefer at No. 1 and Misa at No. 2 in Corey Pronman's first round projection
It's NHL combine week, and as teams begin to conclude meetings and we start hearing general trends about how the league values certain players, here is our latest attempt to project the first round of the NHL Draft. Schaefer gives the Islanders a true potential No. 1 defenseman to build around. His high-end mobility, intelligence and competitiveness project him as a cornerstone on the blue line for years to come. Misa's elite speed and creativity give San Jose a franchise-caliber center. The addition of Misa gives the Sharks flexibility to move either him or Will Smith to the wing long term while building one of the most desirable groups of young forwards in the league. Frondell brings high-end skill, an elite shot and a complete 200-foot game and fills Chicago's need for a strong two-way pivot to pair with Connor Bedard or potentially move Bedard to the wing. Utah prioritizes being hard to play against, and Martone will provide a lot of size and a high compete level while also being very skilled for a big man. Nashville adds high-end skill and speed down the middle with Hagens, even if he isn't the biggest player. He brings the potential to be a major point producer. Desnoyers is a complete center with the size, skating, skill and off-puck play to be a big-minute NHL center, which is something Philly truly craves. Martin brings an intense, physical two-way game while also having an excellent skill level. He is a potential top-two-line center that Boston desperately craves and plays the way the Bruins like. Mrtka is a 6-foot-5 defenseman who skates well and has offensive flashes, giving Seattle a rare right-shot blueliner with top-four upside and much needed young defense talent. O'Brien is a cerebral, playmaking center with top-line upside. His skill and vision are clear NHL traits, which will give Buffalo some more dynamic traits at forward. A 6-foot-5 center with speed, hands and bite, McQueen gives Anaheim a potential massive talent down the middle. He would have gone top five if it weren't for a concerning back injury. Aitcheson adds significant physicality to Pittsburgh's system while also having the size, mobility and skill of a top-four NHL defenseman. A fast, strong winger with a dangerous shot, Carbonneau adds both scoring and the power elements that the Rangers tend to target in their draft picks. Eklund's speed, high motor and ability to create offense gives Detroit an important addition of offensive talent to its system. Smith brings size, skating and offensive tools to the Blue Jackets' blue-line pipeline. He didn't end his season on a high note at the U18 worlds but the league is still very high on this player and his potential. A competitive and highly skilled winger who plays a physical game, Bear could provide a lot of elements to Vancouver's top six. Reschny is a very skilled and intelligent player who plays hard and was as good as any junior player in the second half of the CHL season. Reid is a dynamic skater who closes well defensively and can generate clean exits and secondary offense. He adds to an already promising Habs blue-line group. Cootes brings speed, compete and two-way versatility to the Flames' forward group, giving them a hardworking center with offensive potential. Lakovic is a big man with legit speed, skill and goal-scoring ability. He would be a highly talented forward addition to the Blues' system, even if his compete level still draws some debate. Nesbitt is a heavy center with strong puck skills and playmaking vision. Despite questions about his skating, his offense and physicality make him a legit first-round pick. Fiddler's size, defensive ability, skating and hardness make him exactly the type of defenseman Ottawa has coveted. A responsible, hard-nosed, two-way center, Gastrin adds leadership traits and versatility to the Flyers' forward group that is building their center depth with this draft class. Hensler adds a reliable two-way defenseman to Nashville's system, with size, mobility and puck-moving skill that they hope will lead to top-four minutes. One of the better-skating defensemen in the class coming off a record-setting U18 World Championship, Boumedienne provides transition ability with the potential for some offense at the NHL level as well, to go with a decent frame. A big, skilled forward with great hockey sense, Horcoff needs to work on his skating but has the potential to be a legit scorer as a pro and looked quite good at the college level as a U18 player. Ravensbergen is a big, athletic goaltender with starter upside — the type of swing Nashville can afford to take here with multiple first-round picks, though his stock has cooled a bit recently. Washington rolls the dice on the top Russian in this class, who is a tall, fast winger who is very physical and has some scoring touch, too. Brzustewicz is a smart, mobile right-shot who adds a steady two-way game to a Jets system that needs reliable defenders. The Hurricanes take a swing on a tall winger with NHL-caliber feet, hands and scoring ability, hoping he becomes a future middle-six scorer. Spence brings high effort, responsible two-way play and a solid track record for Canada. He's not the flashiest forward but has enough talent to play in a middle six and plays the way the Sharks want. Zonnon is a big winger who skates and shoots well enough to be a middle-six contributor in Calgary's forward pipeline. Potter's great skating and puck skill give the Flyers a dynamic, high-upside forward, even if his size and perimeter play do raise questions. One person killed, another injured in crash on Route 8 in Naugatuck
A man was killed and a woman was injured on Thursday when they were struck by a pickup truck on Route 8 in Naugatuck as they were standing outside of a vehicle following a prior crash. The collision was reported just before 2 p.m. on Route 8 South where a 2012 Mercedes Benz CLS 550 was stopped in the right shoulder just past the Exit 26 off-ramp, according to Connecticut State Police. The Benz was facing north after having just been involved in a collision. A 37-year-old Hamden man driving a 2020 Ford F450 Super Duty owned by an East Haven towing company was approaching the area as he lost control of the vehicle and it began spinning, state police said. The truck hit a concrete traffic barrier in the median and struck 45-year-old Jimmy Bedard of Wolcott, according to state police. A 46-year-old Shelton woman and the Mercedes were also struck. State police said Bedard suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken in an ambulance to Waterbury Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries, according to state police. The driver of the Ford did not report any injuries. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information or dashboard camera footage from the area has been asked to contact Trooper Patrick Miko at 203-393-4200 or

NHL Mock Draft 2025: Frondell to Chicago, Martone to Utah? Pronman projects Round 1
With the draft lottery done, we have a template of the selection order ready for the 2025 NHL Draft. Unless Radim Mrtka breaks things up in the top 5-7, we expect a run on forwards early in the draft, especially with so many good centers available. The order in which these forwards go is the most interesting thing about this draft and will be debated by teams and fans in the coming weeks. This mock is my best attempt to project how I think the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft will transpire on June 27. Schaefer gives the Islanders a true No. 1 defenseman prospect to build around. His high-end mobility, intelligence and competitiveness project him as a cornerstone on the blue line for years to come and he is highly likely to be the pick despite the limited number of games he played this season. Misa's elite speed and creativity give San Jose a franchise-caliber center. The addition of Misa gives the Sharks flexibility to move either him or Will Smith to the wing long term. He can break games open with his skill and vision and will be a foundational offensive piece for a rebuilding Sharks squad. Advertisement Frondell brings high-end skill and a complete 200-foot game and fills Chicago's need for a strong two-way pivot to pair with Connor Bedard, who may end up as a long-term winger in the NHL. Utah prioritizes being hard to play against, and Martone will provide a lot of size and a high compete level while also being very skilled for a big man. It's easy to envision him next to Logan Cooley on a top line for the next 10 years. Nashville adds high-end skill and speed down the middle with Hagens, even if his game needs more inside presence. He brings the potential to be a major point producer and address a critical need for the Predators at center, even if not every NHL scout is convinced he's an NHL center. Desnoyers' stock continues to rise with his great playoff run for Moncton. He's a complete center with the size, skating, skill and off-puck play to be a big-minute NHL center, which is something Philly truly craves. O'Brien is a cerebral, playmaking center with top-line upside. His skill and vision are clear NHL traits and address Boston's massive need for a center who can drive play and create offense. Martin brings an intense, physical two-way game that complements all the skill Seattle has drafted in recent years while also bringing plenty of puck play himself and the ability to be a top-six forward, be it at center or wing. Mrtka is a 6-foot-5 defenseman who skates well and has offensive flashes, giving Buffalo a rare right-shot blueliner with top-four upside. He compares to a Sabres pick from a long time ago in Tyler Myers. Advertisement A 6-foot-5 center with speed, hands and bite, McQueen gives Anaheim a potential massive talent down the middle. He would have gone top five if it weren't for a concerning back injury. With superb young talent in the organization, Anaheim can afford the gamble on McQueen. Aitcheson adds significant physicality to Pittsburgh's system while also having the size, mobility and skill of a top-four NHL defenseman. Cootes brings speed, compete and two-way versatility to the Rangers' forward group, giving them a hardworking center with offensive potential and addressing an important need at center. Eklund's speed, high motor and ability to create offense gives Detroit an important addition of offensive talent to its system while continuing with a trend of prioritizing compete in its picks. Reid is a dynamic skater who closes well defensively and can generate clean exits and secondary offense. I could see him or Jackson Smith as the Jackets' pick here as they try to add young depth to their blue line. Reschny is a very skilled and intelligent player who plays hard and was as good as any junior player in the second half of the CHL season. He theoretically gives Vancouver a much-needed young center of the future, although not everyone in the league is convinced he's a pro center. A competitive and highly skilled winger who plays a physical game, Bear could provide a lot of elements to Montreal's top six. Advertisement Smith brings size, skating and offensive tools to the Canadiens blue-line pipeline as they continue to build a very strong group of young defensemen. A fast, strong winger with a dangerous shot, Carbonneau adds a scoring element and high-energy game to Calgary's top six, even if he's slightly redundant with someone like Matt Coronato. Lakovic is a big man with legit speed, skill and goal-scoring ability. He would be a highly talented forward addition to the Blues' system, even if his compete level still draws some debate. Ravensbergen is a big, athletic goaltender with starter upside — the type of swing Columbus can afford to take on a second first-rounder. Fiddler's size, defensive ability, skating and hardness make him exactly the type of defenseman Ottawa has coveted. Ideally, the Senators would add some skill to their forward group, but a run on forwards before their pick left them without any of the top-tier forward prospects. A responsible, hard-nosed, two-way center, Gastrin adds leadership traits and versatility to the forward group. Hensler fits the type of defenseman Carolina has liked to target: He's mobile, has skill and can make a reliable pass. Prokhorov's size and physicality fit the typical Flyers draft pick, and he has enough touch and speed to complement their skilled forwards. Advertisement One of the better-skating defensemen in the class, Boumedienne provides transition ability with the potential for some offense at the NHL level as well. Nesbitt is a heavy center with strong puck skills and playmaking vision. Despite questions about his skating, his offense and physicality make him a legit first-round pick as Nashville builds out its center depth in this draft. The Kings take a swing on a tall winger with NHL-caliber feet, hands and scoring ability, hoping he becomes a future middle-six scorer. Brzustewicz is a smart, mobile right-shot who adds a steady two-way game to a Sharks system that needs quality blueliners. Spence brings high effort, responsible two-way play and a solid track record for Canada. He's not the flashiest forward but he has legit enough talent to play in a middle six. A big, skilled forward with great hands, Horcoff needs to work on his skating but has the potential to be a legit scorer as a pro and looked quite good at the college level as a 17-year-old. Potter's great skating and puck skill give Washington a dynamic, high-upside forward, but his size and perimeter play does worry teams too. Zonnon is a big winger who skates and shoots well enough to be a middle-six contributor in Winnipeg's forward pipeline. Regina Pats draft Maddox Schultz with No. 1 pick in WHL draft
The Regina Pats have officially landed top prospect Maddox Schultz. With the first overall selection in Wednesday night's Western Hockey League draft, the Pats selected Schultz, a 15-year-old Regina product who led the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA League in scoring last season. Along with posting 93 points in 44 regular season games to lead the league in scoring as an underage player, Schultz — the league's MVP and rookie of the year — recorded 22 points in 10 playoff games to lead the Pat Canadians to a league title. From there, the 5-foot-10, 165-pounder led Regina to a West regional championship and Telus Cup berth, before scoring the winning goal in overtime of the national final. In the national championship, Schultz led all skaters with 20 points in seven games and was named tournament MVP despite being the youngest player in the event. ADVERTISEMENT While Schultz didn't apply for exceptional status to play in the WHL full-time as a 15-year-old next season, under the Western Canadian Development Model, he is still eligible to play 34 games with the Pats in 2025-26. It's also expected the young phenom Schultz will continue to play at the U18 level with the Pat Canadians. 'It's something you dream of,' Schultz told the WHL's draft livestream. 'Growing up watching this team play … it's a dream come true. 'I'm just really looking forward to getting started with the Pats.' Moments after drafting Schultz first overall, the Pats made a trade acquiring the third overall pick from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a second-round pick, 26th overall, this year along with a 2026 first-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick. And with the third pick, Regina drafted forward Liam Pue, a Langley, B.C. product who, like Schultz, was one of three players eligible in the draft who played at the U18 level last season. ADVERTISEMENT In 29 games with the Langley Hockey Academy U18 squad, Pue, 15, had 30 goals and 20 assists for 50 points to finish second in the Junior Prospects Hockey League (JPHL) scoring race. 'It's not everyday you get a chance to get two exceptional status players,' Pats assistant general manager Dale Derkatch told the livestream. As Schultz, he's the third player in franchise history to be taken first overall joining Connor Bedard in 2020 and Colton Tuebert in 2005. And during the WHL's draft livestream, Bedard had a message for Schultz. 'You're going to be a special player and you'll love your time there,' Bedard said on video to Schultz. 'Tremendous organization to be part of and the fans will embrace you and it's going to be a blast.' Additionally, the Pats also hold the 23rd overall pick in the first round after acquiring the selection from the Everett Silvertips. ADVERTISEMENT On Thursday, rounds two through 15 of the prospects draft will be held with Regina having two selections in the second round (27th and 46th) before picking again in the fourth (89th) and twice more in the sixth and seventh rounds. From there, the Pats hold single picks in rounds eighth through 15. Expansion draft While the Pats will add some new prospects to the roster this week, they also lost a player in the system as forward Corban Almen was selected by the Penticton Vees in Wednesday's expansion draft. Almen, a 17-year-old Saskatoon product, played 12 games for the Pats last year before joining the BCHL's Vernon Vipers. He then ended the season back in Saskatchewan with the under-18 Saskatoon Blazers AAA squad. In 2023-24, Almen played 54 games and had 14 points in his rookie WHL season with the Pats. The expansion Vees, who are joining the WHL after playing Jr. A in B.C., were able to select one player from each WHL club for a total of 22 picks. The Pats were able to protect up to 16 players aged 17 to 20 along with six players on the team's college list. U.S. priority draft On Thursday, prior to round two of the prospects draft commencing, the WHL will hold the U.S. priority draft with the Pats holding the 12th and 32nd overall selections. ADVERTISEMENT Players eligible for this draft including 2010-born prospects who have lived in the United States for two or more consecutive hockey seasons prior to 2025. Players must reside in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington or Wyoming to be eligible. CHL Import Draft The Canadian Hockey League import draft is set for July 2nd and the implications will be heightened this year. Beginning next season, CHL teams will be permitted to play an additional import player, moving the total allowed from two to three. With this change, the CHL has added an extra round to the draft this year as well. The Pats will have the fourth overall pick this year in the first round, followed by the 68th overall pick in the second round and 129th overall pick in the third round. And heading into the 2025-26 season, the Pats will have all three import spots open as last year's lone import, goaltender Ewan Huet, is turning pro next season and is not expected back in Regina. In 2024, Regina drafted Czech forward Vaclav Nestrasil with the eighth overall pick. Last season, the 2025 NHL draft prospect played in the USHL and is committed to the University of Massachusetts for the 2026-27 season. The Moose Jaw Warriors have the first overall pick in the CHL import draft. tshire@ Related The Regina Leader-Post has created an Afternoon Headlines newsletter that can be delivered daily to your inbox so you are up to date with the most vital news of the day.
