Two best friends celebrating birthday killed in explosion after lighting candle
Two best friends were tragically killed in an explosion after one of them lit a candle inside a camper.
Pictures from inside the camper show it severely burned and damaged following the incident that left Alesia Ventura-Large, 58, and 57-year-old Nancy Pilsch both dead while they were supposed to be enjoying a holiday in Maine, in the US. Ventura-Large had invited her friend to the holiday at the Powder Horn Campground in Old Orchard Beach.
The explosion critically injured both women, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office, despite the efforts of emergency services and them being rushed to the Maine Medical Centre in Portland. It comes after a Brit mum's 'horrendous' death after being scratched by a puppy with rabies on holiday.
An initial investigation into the incident suggests the women, both from Massachusetts, had arrived at the camper on Saturday and noticed a strange smell they thought was like garlic. After opening the windows, they also lit a candle to try and mask the smell, but the camper they were in exploded.
It is still not entirely clear what triggered the explosion. Fire Marshall Shawn Esler said two potential causes are being looked at, including if there was a system failure that caused a leak of propane gas. The other is that firefighters said they noticed the gas stove was on, causing a possible leak of propane into the camper, which was owned by Ventura-Large.
Esler said Ventura-Large and Pilsch were 'visiting Maine here this weekend and intended on having a wonderful weekend here in Old Orchard Beach'. This was ahead of Pilsch's 58th birthday on Monday.
John Large, Ventura-Large's husband, said his late spouse was an 'amazing woman' and 'the light of a lot of people's lives'. He added: 'She was a healer, she was a seer, she was very sensitive."
Pilsch's neighbour Steve Bercovitz said his friend's death was a 'tough loss' and had hit their community hard, WOWT reported.
Fire Marshall Esler urged people to use gas detectors in any space where natural or propane gas tanks are cursed, CBS News reported. Smoke detectors, but no gas detectors, were found in the camper.
Esler said: 'This is an absolutely tragic event. While we don't always want to use a tragedy to spread a message, it's incredibly important that if you have a propane or a natural gas in your household that you invest in a gas detector.'
WGME reported that seasoned camper James Viet said gas detectors are a vital safety feature inside campers. 'It's supposed to go off if it senses that smell that you're talking about,' he said.
The campground said in a statement: 'As many of you know, a great tragedy has befallen our Powder Horn community. Sadly, the two guests involved have succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families.'
It added that it would like to 'extend a sincere thanks to the Old Orchard Beach Police, Fire and Rescue for their prompt and effective response'. The resort said: 'They are truly an asset to this community, and we are truly grateful.'

Moment plane passenger bundled screaming onto airport bus after punching stewardess & ‘refusing to turn off her phone'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THIS is the shocking moment a furious airline passenger punched a flight attendant after being told to "turn off her phone". The aggressive outburst resulted in the woman being hauled off onto an airport bus by a group of staff. A woman was asked by Ibom Air cabin crew to turn off her phone as the plane was heading towards the runway. But she is said to have ignored the request, refusing and insisting she would switch her phone to flight mode instead. When things became more heated, the pilot turned the aircraft back to the terminal at Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The woman was forced to get out of her seat and brought to the front of the plane, where she hit a flight attendant standing in the doorway. In the shocking video, the staff member can be heard saying: "She is hitting me. She is f***ing hitting me." The attendant raises her hands to protect her face from further blows. The incensed passenger shouts: "What did you do?" The passenger is then seen putting on her jacket and being removed from the plane with her luggage. Once outside, security staff were forced to restrain her. Moment drunk Brit pensioner, 66, is left with broken arm after getting into fight with Thai bar girl & being thrown to ground At one point, the passenger even swings a small leather handbag at staff. The woman shout and swears at airport officials before attempting to attack one. Staff had to lift her onto the airport bus, where she continued to struggle. Ibom Air has imposed a lifetime ban on the passenger, according to local outlet Business Day. A statement by the airline read: 'Ibom Air reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of unruly or violent conduct that threatens the safety of passengers, crew, or equipment. "Such behaviour will be met with the strongest possible response, including legal action and permanent restriction from our services." It added that it "commended the bravery and professionalism" of its crew and the support of airport staff and the Nigerian Police. Speaking about the incident, Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), reminded passengers that they should respect instructions by cabin crew. He said: "When cabin crew ask you to turn off your phone before take-off or landing, simply comply. "I can't understand why simple routine issues would lead to incidents like this. "Passengers need to understand they have responsibilities, not just rights." It comes after a brawl recently erupted onboard a flight when some passengers reportedly refused to keep quiet after the lights were dimmed. Shocking footage from an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to China shows several people wrestling in the middle of the aisle. Tensions flared when a man seated behind a row of three young women became furious when they kept 'talking loudly'. He then shouted: "'Shut up... are you stupid? I want to sleep." Footage shows a woman in a green outfit and baseball cap leaning across the seat while repeatedly throwing punches at the man, who cowered beneath the food tray. Desperate AirAsia cabin crew in the company's distinctive red dresses can be seen wrestling with those involved in the fight. 5 The passenger grapples with staff

Brit tourist collapses on beach after being drugged & robbed by 3 women in ‘Goodnight, Cinderalla' scam
It comes as two visitors were shoved off a cliff in a similar chilling attack SPIKE HORROR Brit tourist collapses on beach after being drugged & robbed by 3 women in 'Goodnight, Cinderalla' scam Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A BRIT tourist was found collapsed in the sand after being drugged and robbed by three women. He was discovered unconscious on Rio De Janeiro's popular Ipanema beach after reportedly falling victim to the horrifying "Goodnight Cinderalla" scam. In this instance, the victim, a young university student, was holidaying with a pal from school when they met three women at a Samba dance. After heading to a local bar to carry on the evening, one of the victim's said he was handed a Caipirinha cocktail before losing all consciousness. When he woke up in hospital, he said £16,000 had been stolen from his account. The two Brits, who have not been named, also claim their phones were taken too. Police later identified the suspects as Amanda Couto Deloca, 23, Mayara Ketelyn Americo da Silva, 26, and Raiane Campos de Oliveira, 27, thanks to a video making the rounds online. Horrifying footage shows the victim staggering along the beachfront before collapsing into the sand. The women are then seen running along the street and jumping into a taxi before quickly leaving the area. According to investigators, the women are sex workers who target tourists in the city. Campos de Oliveira, was even previously jailed for six months for the same type of offence. Inside America's Tranq Dope crisis as Mexican cartels cut production of key ingredients Officers also identified the taxi driver who drove the women away after committing the offence, though he is not believed to have been involved. The Special Tourism Support Unit have launched an investigation into the case and have urged visitors to be extra careful when socialising with strangers. This comes as the scam has become worryingly widespread in the area with handfuls of tourists suffering its consequences. Earlier this month, an escort was arrested for luring flirtatious tourists before drugging and robbing them of £13,000. How 'Devil's Breath' zombie drug used to spike victims is flooding hols hotspots – as Brit target gives chilling warning YOU'RE enjoying a night out - partying with friends - when suddenly you begin to feel woozy, you feel your heartbeat increase, you start to see hallucinations and you find you can't even speak. Then you black out, waking up hours or even days later with no memory of what has just happened - you may have been spiked with a terrifying drug known as the "Devil's Breath". Tourists and revellers around the globe fear they are being targeted with the mysterious drug - which is said to turn people into "zombies". It has been linked to tens of thousands of crimes in South America - and is even behind several deaths. It's also been reported in European holiday hotspots, including in the UK. Officially called scopolamine, the "Devil's Breath" is derived from the toxic Borrachero tree from South America and it has become a weapon of choice for criminals. Once tested by the CIA as a truth serum, the drug renders its victims powerless, compliant, and blank — leaving them unable to resist, and often unable to recall anything afterwards. A leading UK addiction specialist told The Sun that the misuse of Devil's Breath could pose one of the most dangerous threats to the public - with it being used by criminals in robberies, assaults and sexual attacks. And a top Spanish anti-drug cop has issued a warning to tourists - telling them be on the lookout for Devil's Breath in party hotspots. Francini Demétrio Sitas, 23, was suspected of drugging, robbing and beating a Frenchman in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He said they talked and drank before going to Copacabana, where they continued to drink, before heading back to the city centre where he fell victim to their scam. Meanwhile, last year two women targeted Chilean holidaymakers Ronald Rafael Tejeda Sobarzo and Andrés Ignacio Orellana Ruiz. The pair slipped a date-rape drug into the men's beers before stealing the men's mobile phones. Tragically, they then pushed the drugged tourists off a 10ft tall cliff into an abyss.

Prison officer admits having an 'inappropriate relationship' with inmate
A female prison officer could soon see herself behind bars after admitting to a fling with one of her prisoners. Megan Breen, 23, initially denied the inappropriate relationship with the unnamed prisoner while working at two prisons in Gwent, South Wales. But she later changed her plea and confessed to the illicit affair behind bars, admitting misconduct in a public office for which she will be sentenced for the offence next month. Breen was working at both the category C jail HMP Usk and nearby open prison HMP Prescoed when the offence was committed. The court heard: 'While acting as a public officer, namely a prison officer, wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification, misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder by having a relationship with a prisoner.' The crime was said to have taken place between February and May 2022. Breen, of Newport, Gwent, was bailed but warned she could face jail when she returns to court for sentence. Judge Carl Harrison ordered a pre-sentence report but told her 'all sentencing options' remain open. Breen is the latest prison guard to face charges over inappropriate relationships with an inmate. In March, a female guard was suspended from a scandal-hit prison after she 'had an affair' and got too close to one inmate. Katerina Tatus, an officer at HMP Feltham in west London, was 'marched to the gates by security' over the claims. And earlier this year, Linda De Sousa Abreu, a prison officer at HMP Wandsworth in south London, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after she was filmed having sex with an inmate in his cell. And Toni Cole, 29, was jailed for a year after sharing a series of intimate affairs with a con while working at the new 'super-prison' HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire. She sent more than 4,000 racy messages during her sexual relationship with a prisoner, including 18 video calls. She also kissed him and sat on his lap and even told him she would give unauthorised advanced warning of any cell searches at the Category C prison. More Trending Cole is the second female officer convicted of misconduct in public office at the Wellingborough jail. Last summer, trainee officer Rachel Stanton, 31, was given a suspended jail term after a steamy affair with a prisoner. The mum-of-five's relationship with armed robber Edwin Poole was uncovered when prison staff found three intimate photographs and a sexy love letter in his cell. CCTV also caught the pair going into a prison storeroom for an hour of 'intimacy'. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page.
