Jury retires in trial of man accused of murdering ex-fiancee at luxury hotel
Samantha Mickleburgh was found dead at the Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot on the morning of April 14 last year.
The mother-of-two, 54, had arranged to stay in a twin room with her ex-fiance, James Cartwright, the night before, because she 'didn't want him to feel lonely' on his birthday, his trial at Guildford Crown Court previously heard.
Cartwright called 999 just before 8.30am on April 14 claiming he had discovered the lifeless body of Ms Mickleburgh lying next to him in bed.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is accused of raping and murdering Ms Mickleburgh between April 12 and April 14 last year, which he denies.
He also denies one count of controlling and coercive behaviour between May 1 2022 and April 14, 2024.Cartwright, a father-of-three, previously told jurors his ex-fiancee owed him about £100,000 at the time of her death as Ms Mickleburgh, from Axminster in Devon, borrowed money to help renovate a property she bought in early 2023.
The pair lived together and got engaged later that year, with Cartwright proposing on a beach during a holiday, the court previously heard.
But the relationship began to break down when Cartwright discovered 'highly sexual' messages from Ms Mickleburgh's former partner on her phone and later on her laptop, the jury has been told.
Prosecutors allege Cartwright was leading a double life, and the court heard the 61-year-old had been dancing at a ceilidh with his new girlfriend the night before he allegedly killed Ms Mickleburgh.
The jury retired at 12.26pm on Thursday.

Residents tell of waking to gunshot sounds after man is murdered in north London
Residents have told of waking to the sounds of gunshots after a 45-year-old man was shot dead in north London. Metropolitan Police officers found the victim with gunshot injuries in Dynevor Road, Stoke Newington, in the early hours of Tuesday. A murder investigation has been launched but no arrests have been made. Liza Dodds, 58, a youth worker who lives opposite Dynevor Road, said: 'My husband woke up and said there was gunshots. The instant reaction was 'how do you know?' 'We both got up and had a look. A police officer was doing CPR where the person fell. It seemed like they were going forever.' Another resident said: 'I heard a few gunshots and the first thing I thought was that it was fireworks, because you don't expect it to be a gun. 'I was trying to sleep but then later I heard sirens from the police cars.' One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: 'We were out when it happened so we didn't hear or see anything. 'But when we came back at around 1am, the whole area was cordoned off and the police officers told us that it will be a crime scene for a couple of days.' Four forensic officers in scrubs and masks were at the scene on Tuesday afternoon, alongside several police officers. A Lime bike was lying flat in the cordoned area. The forensic officers used torches to investigate underneath the nine cars parked on the street. Scotland Yard said the man's next of kin have been told and a post-mortem examination will take place. Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke said: 'Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragic death of this man. 'We understand this incident will cause concern within the Stoke Newington community, however we do believe this to be an isolated incident at this stage of the investigation with no wider risk to the general public.' It is the sixth fatal shooting in London so far this year.

Police arrest suspect in killings of 4 Tennessee family members
The man wanted in the killings of the parents, grandmother and uncle of an infant found alone has been arrested, police in Tennessee said Tuesday. Austin Robert Drummond, 28, was taken into custody amid a search, police in Jackson, Tennessee, said in a social media post. Drummond's arrest came shortly after police had warned residents to stay inside their homes, having received a report that the man was spotted in a neighborhood. Jackson is more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) southwest of Nashville. Further details about Drummond's arrest weren't immediately available, and it was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has already charged Tanaka Brown, 29, and Giovonte Thomas, 29, with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Investigators allege both men 'assisted' Drummond, 28, in the family's killings. Many questions are still unanswered, including how the relatives were slain and how the baby ended up in the Tigrett area, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the bodies. Last week, authorities said they found the car they believe Drummond had been driving. It was located in Jackson, Tennessee, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) from where the bodies were discovered and some 40 miles from where the baby was left. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch has said authorities believe the family's killings were a targeted attack by Drummond, who had a relationship with the victims. The baby is safe and being cared for, authorities have said. Officials obtained warrants for Drummond that charge him with four counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping and weapons offenses. His criminal history includes prison time for robbing a convenience store and threatening to go after jurors. He was also charged with attempted murder while behind bars.

Cocaine-fuelled father who killed his teenage son in crash after ignoring doctor's orders not to drive is jailed
A cocaine-fuelled motorist who ignored medical advice to stop driving before he killed his teenage son has been jailed for 10 years. Daniel Burba, 31, had an epileptic fit at the wheel of his wife's Peugeot van which swerved off the M6 near Lancaster and hit a tree on April 20. His son Ryan Morgan, 14, was sat in the front seat at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene, between junctions 34 and 33 southbound near to University Hill. The youngster died 'in terror' as he tried to gain control of the vehicle moments before the crash, Preston Crown Court heard. Burba was taken to hospital with 'relatively minor' injuries to his ribs and lacerations. While he was being treated, a paramedic discovered a small bag of cocaine in Burba's wallet, the court was told. Blood tests revealed that the defendant was four times above the legal drug-drive limit. It emerged that Burba, from Morecambe, Lancashire, had been told in October 2014 by his doctor to stop taking cocaine after he suffered a seizure which lasted up to four minutes. The provisional licence holder was also advised not to drive. Burba was given a similar warning in February when he was admitted to hospital after more fits and was also told to inform the DVLA. Sentencing, Judge Robert Altham, the Honorary Recorder of Preston, told him: 'You knew that cocaine predisposed you to further fits. 'You were not entitled to drive unsupervised and certainly not on the motorway. You should not have behind the wheel at all 'You chose to drive on a motorway on a busy bank holiday Sunday. You had a passenger in the van and that passenger was your son, a person you should have been protecting and not endangering. 'You knew that taking cocaine made your decision to drive all the more dangerous. Your driving put many other road users in danger.' Burba, of Arnside Crescent, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing death by dangerous driving. He also admitted driving without a licence and with no insurance. Judge Altham disqualified him from driving for 14 years and five months. In an emotional tribute in April, Ryan's family described the 14-year-old boy as 'precious', adding 'there is no one like our Ryan, such a beautiful soul and so far from typical'. They added: 'Words can't express how much we have loved and cherished him and how much we always will. The most funny, silly, loving, generous boy, who literally could not stop talking. 'He was always making his little sisters giggle or giving them cuddles when they were sad. He made them their bottles and read them stories at bedtime. 'He was such a family lad choosing to stay home with us sometimes when his friends wanted him to go out. 'He tried to put on a laddish attitude but it made us laugh because he was so soft, sensitive, kind and lovely. 'Every time he had pocket money he would go to the shop and buy everyone else treats and forget himself. 'He adored his dad and would stand at the window asking 'when's dad coming back?' every five minutes. 'He would help his dad take off his work boots when his back was gone and ask how his day was. 'They loved playing Fortnite and arguing over who got what loot, watching Liverpool and Blackpool FC together, having wrestling matches and father-son talks about his love life. 'He would cuddle his mum and ask if she was OK when she looked stressed saying, "Oh mum, I don't know how you cope with these kids, they're such hard work!" 'He would follow mum around the kitchen when she was trying to do jobs showing her silly videos on YouTube and telling her about every little detail of his day. 'He welcomed so many people into our family life, most of all his big sister Cat who he was so close to. 'Telling tales on her, winding her up, begging her to go to the shop, play Xbox or cards with him, and most importantly having a friend to talk to about everything. 'Our home and our family will be so empty and quiet without him (singing Blackpool FC chants all day and night, making annoying noises to wind us up, or his new craze gangsta rapping). 'We wanted to see him grow and be the beautiful father and loving husband we knew he would have been. 'All we know is that he is in the arms of our saviour Jesus Christ and he is safe with Him now. We will see him again one day and be able to hold him ourselves. 'We will be waiting and longing to see him, every day and every moment until then.' His mum Kim added: 'Ryan Liam was the most perfect precious little boy you would ever see, and he grew to be more beautiful every day. 'He was the most amazing son and brother to Primrose and Summer and we will miss him as long as we live. 'Our hearts have a hole that will never heal, and we can't express enough the devastation this has caused our family. 'We are eternally heartbroken. RIP our perfect beautiful Ryan Liam.'
