Tearful Brown says winning BMW International Open was 'out-of-body experience' after friend's death
MUNICH (AP) — English golfer Daniel Brown was in tears after going through an 'out-of-body experience' in winning the BMW International Open by two strokes on Sunday, days after the death of a close friend.
The No. 170-ranked Brown shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 in the final round to capture his second European tour title, after the ISPS Handa World Invitational in 2023.
After making his sixth and final birdie of the day at the par-5 18th, Brown walked off the green and started to cry.
'I lost a friend at home last weekend,' Brown said, before pausing and holding back more tears. 'It's for him.'
Brown said that was his motivation to win at Golfclub München Eichenried.
'The last two days I kept thinking about him,' he said. 'I tried not to get too emotional in the process. I'm not really too sure what happened today. All day really was like an out-of-body experience.
'He was there with me,' Brown added, 'and it made it a little bit easier.'
Brown started the day with a one-shot lead over countryman Jordan Smith, birdied four of his first six holes, and picked up two more birdies coming home to finish on 22-under par for the week.
The 30-year-old Brown hadn't had a top-10 finish since February at the Qatar Masters.
Smith shot 67 and was alone in second place.

Women's Euros viewership nearly doubles from 2022, Fox Sports says
Television viewership of Euros group-stage matches has nearly doubled from the 2022 iteration of the tournament, Fox announced Tuesday, with an average of 306,000 people tuning in to those 24 matches this summer, compared to an average of 161,000 three years ago. The most-watched game so far has been France's scintillating 2-1 victory over reigning champion England on July 5. That game brought in 690,000 viewers, a 329 percent increase from the previous group stage. Advertisement More recently, 2023 World Cup champion Spain's 3-1 win over Italy on July 11 averaged 568,000 viewers, while an average of 486,000 tuned in for Sweden's 4-1 victory over Germany on July 12. Both matches featured the winning teams coming back from a goal down to claim three points. A Fox spokesperson also told The Athletic that England's 6-1 win over Wales garnered around 151,000 viewers to FS1, while the Lionesses' 4-0 rout of the Netherlands brought 120,000 to the same channel. 'UEFA Women's EURO 2025 has surpassed all our expectations in setting a new viewership record for the group stage. Fox Sports is proud to see our commitment to both international soccer and women's sports validated by +90% growth,' Fox Sports president of insight and analytics Mike Mulvihill said in a statement. 'With the knockout rounds starting Wednesday and matches the rest of the way airing on Fox, we're confident the tournament will continue resonating with fans,' Mulvihill added. This is Fox Sports' first time broadcasting the women's European championships. In addition to airing the matches themselves — not only on cable but on its main broadcast channel — the network has featured prominent pre-match coverage featuring a slate of retired international women's football stars. World Cup champions Carli Lloyd (who is also a National Soccer Hall of Famer) and Julie Ertz of the U.S. women's national team, and four-time European champion Ariane Hingst of Germany composed the analyst team alongside Alexi Lalas and Stu Holden at the start of the tournament. Norway and Italy will open the Euros' quarterfinal stage when they face off on Wednesday in Geneva. Thursday's quarterfinal features Sweden against England, followed by Spain vs. tournament host Switzerland on Friday and France vs. Germany on Saturday. All matches kick off at 3 p.m. ET.

Lamine Yamal vs Ousmane Dembélé: Updated Ballon d'Or odds revealed
An updated round of odds for the next Ballon d'Or award have on Tuesday come to the fore online. And they will no doubt come as altogether concerning reading for those of a Barcelona persuasion. This comes amid confirmation that Lamine Yamal has fallen some way off frontrunner Ousmane Dembélé in the race for the prize. Advertisement Wide-man Lamine's name has been heavily pushed in the Ballon d'Or debate once more over the last couple of days. This comes after Paris Saint-Germain's heavy defeat in the final of the Club World Cup saw the Barca faithful kickstart a fresh campaign for their young attacker to beat out chief 'Golden Ball' competitor Ousmane Dembélé. As alluded to above, however, if the latest odds doing the rounds online are anything to go by, then Dembélé's CWC defeat does not appear to have negatively affected his candidacy at all. In fact, as revealed by Actu Foot, citing collective bookmaker odds, the France international is considered as being in with an 83% chance of lifting the Ballon d'Or this September. Advertisement The odds (non-cumulative) do place Lamine in the runners-up spot, but with just a 20% chance of being named world football's best player: Conor Laird – GSFN

Tara Moore, British tennis player, handed four-year doping ban
British tennis player Tara Moore has been handed a four-year anti-doping sanction despite previously being cleared of any wrongdoing. Moore, 32, was provisionally suspended after testing positive for the anabolic steroids boldenone and nandrolone following a tournament in Colombia in April 2022. An independent tribunal 19 months later ruled that Moore bore no fault or negligence in December 2023 before the The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) appealed that decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Advertisement CAS on Tuesday confirmed it has ruled in the ITIA's favour, upholding its appeal, dismissing a counter-appeal from Moore and imposing on her a four-year ban from the sport, minus time previously served under the provisional suspension. Moore, previously Britain's No. 1-ranked doubles player, will now not be eligible to play again until the beginning of the 2028 season. ITIA chief executive officer Karen Moorhouse said: 'For the ITIA, every case is considered according to the individual facts and circumstances. 'Our bar for appealing a first instance decision is high, and the decision is not taken lightly. In this case, our independent scientific advice was that the player did not adequately explain the high level of nandrolone present in their sample. Today's ruling is consistent with this position. 'We understand that players and their support teams may have questions about this decision, and we will answer these fully once we have reviewed the details of the ruling.' Moore recorded an adverse analytical finding (AAF) from a sample collected during the Copa Colsanitas tournament in Bogotá in April 2022. She argued that the presence of boldenone and nandrolone in her sample must have been caused by the consumption of beef and/or pork while in Colombia. CAS revealed in publishing the verdict on Tuesday that the ITIA filed an appeal against the tribunal's ruling in January of this year before the appeals were heard in March. 'After reviewing the scientific and legal evidence, the majority of the CAS Panel considered that the player did not succeed in proving that the concentration of nandrolone in her sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat,' the Court said in a media release publicising the verdict. 'The Panel concluded that Ms Moore failed to establish that the ADRV (anti-doping rule violation) was not intentional. The appeal by the ITIA is therefore upheld and the decision rendered by the independent tribunal is set aside. The cross-appeal filed by Ms Moore was declared inadmissible.' Advertisement Doping has been a highly contentious issue for the sport in recent months following the positive tests and subsequent bans served by men's world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and four-time French Open women's champion Iga Świątek. Both players went on to win their respective singles titles at Wimbledon last weekend.
