First images of new Waterford bridge revealed as installation continues

With the arrival of the impressive Hebo 9 floating sheerleg crane and the four spans of the sustainable transport bridge earlier this week, it was anticipated that once the sheerleg and barges were derigged and mobilised, the lifting and installation of the bridge sections would proceed successfully on Wednesday.
The installation operations on the river are being coordinated with the Port of Waterford and are dictated by tides and therefore are subject to change. The Hebo 9 sheerleg crane will lift each bridge section from its barge at Frank Cassin Wharf and transport it upstream to its installation position at the bridge. This process will be coordinated with the tidal cycle on the river.
Temporary support frames that have been constructed in the river will initially support the sections pending their final integration into the permanent supporting piers.
Safety is of paramount importance and the lifting operation has very precise safety protocols requiring very slow and methodical progress with constant checks and monitoring during the operation.
The four lifts will be carried out over four days: Wednesday, May 21 – North Main Span (65m in length), Thursday, May 22 – South Main Span (65m in length), Friday, May 23 – North Approach span (35m in length), and Saturday, May 24 – South Approach span (35m in length)
Bascule bridge
Like Rice Bridge upstream, the sustainable transport bridge has an opening central span to allow river vessels to pass through, and smaller boats can pass underneath the bridge, subject to tides.
The inclusion of this opening central span retains potential for future upstream river transport as well as opportunities for maritime events and festivals, including a possible return of the Tall Ships Festival.
These types of vertical opening bridges are called 'bascule bridges', from the French term for a balance scale, and originated in medieval Europe as drawbridges to defend castles and towns. Whereas Rice Bridge is a 'single leaf' bascule bridge, which opens from one side of the central span, the new bridge is a 'double leaf' bascule bridge, which opens from both sides of the central span.
Once the bridge is installed, the bascule leaves for the opening central span will be tested and put into operation, the bridge finishing works, which includes the final surfacing, lighting, street furniture, and parapet railings, will commence as well as the installation of the downstream bridge pier protection system.
The fast-tracking of integration works as part of construction of the strategic development zone (SDZ) by Harcourt Developments will facilitate the opening of the bridge to the public in the last three months of 2026.

The bridge superstructure weighs over 1,000 tonnes, roughly the equivalent of the weight of three Boeing 747 jets laden with fuel on take-off. The bridge is being transported and installed in four sections. The heaviest section is over 500 tonnes, roughly equivalent to the weight of one Boeing 747.
The bridge sections will be lifted into position by the HEBO 9 floating sheerleg crane from Rotterdam. This crane has a lifting capacity of 800 tonnes and a lifting height of 67m, which is similar to a 20-storey building.
At 207m, the bridge will be one of the longest city centre pedestrian river crossings in Ireland. The Sean O'Casey Bridge in Dublin, which also has a central opening span is 98m long. The new Athlone greenway bridge that crosses the Shannon is 104m long.
The steel deck is painted with a light grey matt finish. The advice to onlookers is to remember that this is a construction operation without precedent in Waterford.
The best public vantage point is William Vincent Wallace Plaza, directly overlooking the River Suir and bridge alignment. This location is safe, central, and accessible, with clear views of barge movements, crane lifts, and installation activities. Only designated, approved drone operators are permitted to fly in this zone during the sustainable transport bridge installation window.
Installation is not a single 'big lift'. It will take four days to complete so there are plenty of opportunities to view the process. Please do not enter active work zones, wharves, or construction areas, added a spokesperson.

Barry Hennessy, ASTI subject representative for French, said this was a literary comprehension test, focusing on an author wishing to write a book about an elderly woman he meets by chance. 'Students here needed to read the full text and the questions very closely, both of which were very nuanced at times,' Mr Hennessy, who is a teacher at Coláiste Eanna, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16, said. 'Students in the middle ground are likely to have found this passage and the questions quite challenging. Mr Hennessy pointed out that students should not worry too much about the tricky vocabulary in question two. 'Overall, a high standard of vocabulary and a careful, methodical approach were necessary to do well on this question,' he said. 'However, it must be pointed out that the marking scheme will be carefully designed and, if necessary, modified to ensure that candidates are rewarded for valid attempts, even where these fall short of full marks.' Elizabeth Lyne, who offers tutoring at and teaches at Coláiste Mhichíl in Limerick, said some familiar topics appeared on the paper, including a diary entry about cancelling a party due to a red weather alert. 'This is similar to a question that appeared a few years ago about cancelling New Year's Eve plans,' she said. 'Students may have been expecting a question on vaping, but what appeared instead was a question on drug use. They would have been able to repurpose material about vaping for this question, and my students would also have the vocabulary to write about health and addiction.' Geraldine Dwyer, subject expert and a teacher at Se. ondary School, Macroom, Co Cork, said that a question on gender equality would be a topic which candidates would have prepared, as it is a core topic. 'The question on engagement in political life would be more challenging and would incorporate a range of issues,' Ms Dwyer said. In the listening comprehension section, Ms Lyne said that some students found a question about criminals accessing a pharmacy to be tricky. Corinne Gavenda, a teacher at the Institute of Education, said that some students might have found it tougher than last year as the pace of the speaker increased. 'However, for some this would be a benefit as it was a better representation of the natural cadence of the language,' said Ms Gavenda. 'Throughout the sections students will be happy with both the material and the vocabulary. Section D was particularly lovely as the topic of introducing uniforms in French schools was expected to appear this year – some students could have guessed the answers. 'The biggest challenge came in Section E as the word 'brisant' (breaking) was essential, but students would be more familiar with 'casse' and so miss out on the exact answer.' Ordinary The ordinary-level French paper was fine, overall, teachers said. 'Candidates and teachers will have been pleased to see the recent pattern of the popular form-filling question in written production focusing on applying for a job,' said Mr Hennessy. 'Candidates will have been well-prepared for and reassured by this question.' Leaving Cert students required a high standard of vocabulary and a "careful, methodical approach" to tackle a challenging French reading comprehension on this year's paper. The Leaving Cert exams continued Wednesday morning, as students sat the French exam. The Junior Cycle also progressed with the 2025 Home Economics exam. This morning's Leaving Certificate Higher Level French paper was overall fair, according to Barry Hennessy, ASTI subject spokesperson and teacher at Coláiste Éanna, Dublin. There was a wide variety of familiar topics in the written production section, most of which students would have prepared for in class, he added. While the reading comprehension passages were generally "fine," students faced some challenges with Question 2. "The literary text in particular," he said. "The journalistic reading comprehension, question 1, was on the growing popularity of scouting and the text was overall accessible with lots of familiar vocabulary especially to do with outdoor pursuits and household chores." He added: "As always, some questions required a greater amount of grammatical manipulation or deeper reading of the text, however, this is normal and aims to reward candidates of differing abilities. "The French marking scheme always awards pretty generous partial marks to those whose attempts fall short of grammatical perfection." Junior Cycle Meanwhile, Megan Friel, Studyclix subject spokesperson and teacher at Mercy College, Sligo, said she believed this year's Junior Cycle Home Economics paper was 'very doable, fair, and relatable to students' lives.' 'All the short questions were very straightforward with no tricks or curveballs,' she said. As predicted, themes like sustainability and smart technology appeared in the short questions, she added. 'The inclusion of the Return Deposit Scheme, also seen on some mock papers , was likely a welcome relief for students.' 'Overall, the exam featured very topical and student-friendly questions that were manageable and free of unpleasant surprises — sure to bring a smile to both students and teachers.'

Irish paper 1 presented students with topics like AI and asked them to consider if Ireland is a good country to live in, as the Leaving Cert exams continued on Monday afternoon. The 2025 higher level Irish paper 1 covered key areas students would have expected, according to teacher Stephen Doyle, subject spokesperson with Studyclix. 'The aural section had clear recordings covering a good variety of topics," he said. However, while the questions were 'generally fair', some detailed questions in 'cuid c' required careful listening skills, he believed. 'The essay options gave students a wide range of current and relevant topics including people they admire, whether Ireland is a good place to live, environmental issues, and timely topics like world politics and current news stories." Students could also choose to write a story based on either 'dóchas', which means 'hope', or around the statement 'is ait an mac an saol' which means 'life is strange and wonderful'. Mr Doyle added: 'The exam was very topical and covered issues that students would be genuinely interested in, such as AI which was expected to appear, as well as global politics and whether Ireland is a good country to live in.' Ordinary level The ordinary level paper was also very accessible, he thought. 'The composition section offered simple choices including writing a blog on shopping, an interesting place or their favourite sports person. 'On the other hand, the vocabulary needed for section c, the letter, would have challenged any sixth year ordinary level student. "The story option would be welcomed by students as it allowed them to discuss music and a concert they attended. Overall, this was a manageable paper.' Leaving Cert exams continue on Tuesday with Irish paper 2 and biology, while Junior Cycle exams will continue with graphics, Italian and French.
