Supreme Court Says NEET-PG 2025 Must Be in One Shift
The Supreme Court on Friday directed that the NEET-PG 2025 exam, scheduled for June 15, must be held in a single shift instead of two.
A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and N V Anjaria, said that holding the exam in two shifts could lead to unfairness. The court noted that two different sets of question papers can never be exactly equal in difficulty.
The order came during a hearing on a plea that challenged the earlier decision to hold NEET-PG in two shifts. The plea argued that this could harm fairness and equal competition for candidates.
The court agreed and asked the authorities to make sure the exam is conducted in one shift and with complete transparency.
Recently, the Supreme Court also gave directions to prevent seat-blocking in NEET-PG counselling and asked for raw scores, answer keys, and normalization formulas to be made public.

The National Board of Examination has submitted a request to the Supreme Court to reschedule the NEET PG 2025 exam to August 3, 2025. Earlier, the exam was scheduled for June 15, however, on June 2, the Supreme Court ordered to conduct the exam in a single shift rather than in two shifts. Following this, the NBE had announced that the exam would be postponed. In the application to SC, the NBE explained that August 3 is the earliest date available from its technology partner, TCS, to hold the exam in a single shift. The period between May 30 and June 15 was inadequate to organise the exam in a single shift, as it would require a greater number of exam centres across more cities and extensive hardware supply chain management, TCS has said, reported Live Law. 'The current booking of test centres is double the capacity as the examination was planned at the centres in two shifts…1000+ Centres shall need to be booked and engaged which will require considerable time. The infrastructure needed to be engaged to execute a shift of 242679 Candidates with Buffer would require Infrastructure for 2.70 Lakh to be made available across the country which will require considerable amount of time," the application states, the report added. Besides, the NEET PG 2025 application window will be reopened, giving candidates a fresh chance to choose their preferred test city. Once the new test city preferences are received, candidates will be reassigned to test centres. This entire process will take some time, the report stated. On its application, NBE also highlighted the need for sufficient time to arrange secure examination venues, adequate compatible computer systems, three-layer power backup systems, network infrastructure, security software and hardware, skilled technical personnel, anti-cheating measures, surveillance systems, operational readiness of each test centre, mock drills, load tests, and system audits as it needs to prevent malpractice. NEET-PG 2025 to be held 3 in a single shift on August, Supreme Court told
NEW DELHI: The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Postgraduate 2025 (NEET-PG 2025), which will be previously scheduled to be held in two shifts on June 15, will now be conducted in a single shift on August 3, the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) told in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The board's decision comes days after a bench headed by justice Vikram Nath on May 30 set aside its decision to hold the examination in two shifts, ruling that the two-shift model was 'arbitrary' since any two question papers could never be said to be have an 'identical level of difficulty or ease'. The bench gave NBEMS two weeks to identify more centres for this purpose. The board, which sought the top court's approval to the new date, said in its application that August 3 was the earliest possible date given by its technology partner i.e., M/s Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS). The company has suggested the examination could be held in a single shift from 9 am to 12.30 pm on August 3. When the plan was to conduct the exam in two shifts, NBEMS said the test was to be conducted at 448 centres across 195 cities. NBEMS said the examination for 2,42,679 candidates would now be conducted at more than 1,000 centres across over 250 cities, and would require over 60,000 people to handle jobs ranging from the commanding officers, system operators, network administrators to invigilators, security staff, registration managers, CCTV staff, electricians. In addition, TCS has indicated that it would need to arrange and configure over 2,000 local exam servers across the country. 'The respondent (NBEMS) is fully committed to holding the NEET-PG 2025 in a single this application is being made only to ensure practical feasibility and safety of the said examination along with the coordination with all the relevant authorities and stakeholders,' NBEMS said. The top court's decision against the two-shift format came on a petition by candidates who reasoned that the questions in the evening shift last year were relatively easier than the first shift. The petitioners, which included individual candidates and the United Doctors Front, questioned why no effort wsas made to identify options to hold the examination in a single shift. NBEMS had initially claimed that it opted for the two-shift system to rule out the possibility of malpractices by unscrupulous elements since the online examination required secured centres.

Justice Varma NEW DELHI: The Centre set to introduce an impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, expected to commence in mid-July. Govt sources on Tuesday confirmed motion to be introduced in the upcoming session. The move follows a Supreme Court-appointed inquiry panel's indictment of Justice Varma over allegations of unaccounted cash discovered at his official residence in Delhi after a fire on March 14, 2025. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is set to hold consultations with all political parties to build consensus for the unprecedented motion, which, if passed, would mark the first-ever impeachment of a High Court judge in India. Govt sources said that there is a process of forming a panel to investigate the charges against the accused judge before an impeachment motion. However, that formality is not needed since the Supreme Court has already completed the exercise. The controversy erupted when emergency services, responding to the fire at Justice Varma's residence, recovered a substantial amount of burnt currency notes, reportedly stacked as high as 1.5 feet in a storeroom. A three-member panel, constituted by then-Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on March 22, 2025, and comprising Justices Sheel Nagu, G S Sandhawalia, and Anu Sivaraman, found credence in the allegations of misconduct. The panel's report, submitted on May 4, stated that Justice Varma failed to explain the source of the cash, deeming the misconduct serious enough to warrant impeachment proceedings. Justice Varma, who was transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court following the incident, has denied the allegations, calling them a conspiracy. Despite the Supreme Court's recommendation to resign, he has refused, prompting the government to initiate the impeachment process. Under the Constitution of India and the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, an impeachment motion requires the support of at least 100 Lok Sabha or 50 Rajya Sabha members to be tabled. It must then pass with a two-thirds majority in both Houses. The government, keen on ensuring bipartisan support, has tasked Minister Rijiju with engaging opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, and DMK, to back the motion. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has welcomed the move, emphasizing the need to uphold public trust in the judiciary.
