The MacBook Pro got me through college — here's why it's perfect for today's creative students

Beyond the MacBook Pro, there is an ocean of companies trying to sell you what they think is a great laptop for your studies. Block out the noise and check out my best laptops for students guide for my expert picks that are worth your money.
I was an A/V nerd back in college, spending my time obsessing over photography and videography for my degree, while recording my own music as a passion. Through it all, one laptop brought my imagination to life: the MacBook Pro. And I can safely say that is still very much the case in 2025.
Ever since flipping to Mac 18 years ago for my daily driver (I felt myself grow older typing that), I've never looked back. The industry-standard software support, the display and build quality, the 'it just works' synergy of Apple's entire ecosystem, the raw horsepower for prosumer tasks, the battery life — all of this comes together to make it a must-buy for any creative in school.
So what makes it so special? What makes the M4 MacBook Pro the default choice I tell anyone going into a media course similar to mine to get? Let me explain.
The M4-based MacBook Pro M4 is pretty close to being the perfect laptop. You get fantastic performance from the M4 chip, useful Apple Intelligence features, a better webcam and obscenely long battery life (18:31). In our MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 review, we said it's the best laptop for power users, now with more AI features. The base model features a 14.2-inch 3024 x 1964 Retina display, Apple M4 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD.
If you're looking for raw horsepower, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro chip is for you. It offers blistering performance and will likely speed through most of your daily tasks without so much as a hiccup. The base model features a 14.2-inch 3024 x 1964 Retina display, Apple M4 Pro CPU, 24GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD.
When I went to college, my MacBook Pro still had a light-up Apple logo and an Intel processor. But it was still the speed demon of the campus with somewhat decent battery life.
In 2025, that's a very different story. Apple silicon continues to dominate the charts in Pugetbench creator software benchmarking and equally offering serious longevity.

Even on the regular M4 MacBook Pro, the speeds of rendering a complex 4K video edit or adding large modulation, distortion and delay effects to multiple tracks in an audio composition are done rapidly. But of course, you can step it up to M4 Pro for that additional performance.
Currently, I'm on an M3 Pro MacBook Pro as my daily driver, and I'm able to export a 20-minute 4K video from Final Cut Pro in around 5-6 minutes depending on the complexity. This is significant for speedily turning around work for tight deadlines.

It's Apple's m/o after all — make great hardware, but don't forget about the software too. I do dabble in Adobe's creative suite every now and again (mostly Photoshop, but I do know my way around Premiere Pro), but in my mind, none of the competition comes close to Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.
Now I know that's a controversial take, and before I get absolutely torched in the comments, I know there are more feature-rich options out there. For example, DaVinci Resolve does have more powerful color grading tools than FCP, and Pro Tools gives you a lot more control over multi-track recording.
But what I'm talking about here is the ease-of-access and the better balanced sliding scale between simple creations and the increasing complexities of pro content creation. To get to the point of color grading in DaVinci, it takes a number of steps and a ton of industrial knowhow to get there. On Final Cut, it could be as easy as clicking 'Enhance light and color' for a quick fix, or you have the flexibility to get super personal on it.
To even just set up a session in Pro Tools, there's a steep learning curve (and don't even think about adding MIDI instruments, as support is weak). With Logic Pro inheriting a combined loop/timeline user interface, creating a song is a cinch, but with a huge depth of Audio FX manipulation to geek out over the millisecond response time of a reverb.
And these have just gotten better over time with AI tasks boosted by that Neural Engine — tracking a moving person to walk in front of some giant text is as easy as setting a magnetic mask, and you can alter the tempo of an audio track without any noticeable digitization of the sound quality.
In terms of capabilities, they are indeed apps used by pros across the world, but Apple absolutely nailed the UI on them to essentially handhold you through your first creations and gently start to layer over increased complexities in a real 'what you see is what you get' quality.
Plus, a special shout-out to the fact you can just buy them outright for life — rather than being forced into a monthly fee for Adobe Creative Suite.
So most of my ideas come past midnight (shout-out to my fellow insomniacs). At a time like that, you need speed and stability so as to not let that idea vanish out of your mind in the time it takes to start a laptop up.
The instant-on nature of a MacBook Pro is one of the low-key best bits about the machines of today. Immediately, you can jump straight in and open what you need to open — rather than having to wait for a few seconds for your Windows laptop to wake up and be notified of any news on the Microsoft widgets bar (also those ads…you've got to love those ads).
It's clean enough to jump straight into whipping something together within seconds. And this was on my 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2015 that you see here.! Fast forward to now, and that process has only gotten faster.
None of this is to say there aren't viable alternatives in the Windows space. I'll be the first to admit that after falling in love with the likes of the Asus ProArt P16 (currently testing the new 2025 version).
But whichever way you slice it, I always end up finding my way back to a MacBook Pro and feeling all the more creatively engaged with it. The snappiness of the performance, the worry-free battery life, the quality of that display and the utilitarian nature of the laptop just getting out of the way of you making cool stuff just gives you reassurance in what you create.
And it's that feeling that makes this easily my personal pick of the pack for a laptop for any college student jumping on a creative degree.

Trump says he will impose 100% tariffs on semiconductors and computer chips

President Donald Trump said he plans to impose 100% tariffs on computer chips and semiconductors, with an exception for companies that have committed to building in the United States."We'll be putting a tariff, approximately 100%, on chips and semiconductors," Trump said at an Oval Office event on Aug. 6 with Apple CEO Tim Cook, who was visiting the White House to announce plans for an additional $100 billion in investment in the U.S. Trump said companies, such as Apple, that have committed to building in the United States would be spared from the tariffs. He did not provide details on when the tariffs would go into effect. "If you're building in the United States of America, there's no charge. Even though you're building and you're not producing yet in terms of the big numbers of jobs… there will be no charge.' The tariffs on computer chips and semiconductors could raise prices on goods such as personal computers, smartphones, electric vehicles, and video game April, Nvidia announced plans to manufacture its AI supercomputers entirely in the United States for the first time, committing to building its advanced chips in Arizona and AI supercomputers in Texas. The White House hailed Nvidia's decision as "the Trump Effect in action.""Onshoring these industries is good for the American worker, good for the American economy, and good for American national security," the White House said in a statement while announcing Nvidia's plans. Trump has currently placed tariffs on various sectors, including 50% on steel, aluminum, and copper, and 25% on imported automobiles. Dozens of countries are also facing country-specific tariffs first announced on April 2, dubbed as Liberation Day by Trump.

Google Confirms Pixel 10 Pro Details With Attack On Rivals

With a simple caption of 'Google Pixel 10: Soon', the competitive tension ahead of August's 'Made By Google' launch event has been elevated. In addition, Google has also leaned into the competition to highlight why customers might be better off buying the upcoming Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones: The Pixel 10 Pro Challenge To paraphrase Wikipedia: Diss Track; a song whose primary purpose is to verbally attack someone else, usually another artist. Diss tracks are often the result of an existing, escalating feud between the two people. It's hard not to think that Google's latest teaser video of the Pixel 10 family doesn't fall under this classic definition. While it holds short of naming the 'new phone with a feature coming soon, that has been coming soon for a full year', there's no manufacturer other than Apple, no other smartphone other than the iPhone, that this could apply to. Rather than who, the more interesting question is perhaps why, and why now? The Pixel 10 Pro Builds on Today's Strength One reason may be the current state of the smartphone market. The Android platform, no matter the manufacturer, is significantly ahead of iOS and the iPhone. Artificial Intelligence can be found in numerous digital assistants; some are voice-based, others are on-device clients that help sift through information to offer better feedback and present options. These are all heavily promoted and have unlocked many new features across all ranges. Pixel is no different, although it does have some advantages in being able to tap directly into Google's AI services. It also pushes the other side of the OS coin. The competition, Apple, is not delivering the same experience as Android. The buzz around artificial intelligence is not going away, and if all of that buzz can be focused on your own product and not the competition, that's going to be a benefit both in the short and the long term. The Competition Is Behind The Pixel 10 Pro Tim Cook's Apple is fully aware of this. With previous technological leaps, the perception that Apple is late to the market but comes in with the right solution has been a strong market force in both the allure of Apple and framing its hardware at the apex. This has not been the case with AI. The awkwardly backronymed Apple Intelligence will always be on the back foot when compared to Google's approach due to a higher reliance of on-device processing and reducing a user's digital footprint outside of their smartphone. That's a technical answer, and one that is relatively clear-cut with the geekerati, but it's not as simple a sell to the general consumers. They see an Apple product that does not match the competition… and those who haven't yet made the connection now have this latest video to nudge them towards Google's framing of AI, rather than Apple. Extending AI With Pixel 10 Pro Google is setting the ground for its upcoming expansion of mobile artificial intelligence. Android 16 brings a raft of new features and will make its debut on the competitively priced Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones… phones that Google has once again confirmed it will be launching on Aug. 20. Not only will the Pixel 10 family show off the new version of Android to the public, but it will also bring with it Google's own first-party apps and services that are unique to Google. These will, as in previous years, offer significant support to users through AI. Waiting For The Pixel 10 Pro In this latest video, Google has stated it is in the lead with AI, its competition has failed to deliver, and it is ready to provide more AI with the new Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones. Now to see how it delivers on those claims at the end of the month. Read the latest Pixel 10 Pro decisions made by Google…

Apple to invest another $100 billion into the US to avoid tariffs

Apple plans to invest an additional $100 billion in the US, the company announced on Wednesday. The investment follows President Donald's Trump's previously announced plans to raise tariffs on India by an additional 25 percent (bringing the total tariff to 50 percent) for purchasing oil from Russia. Apple relies heavily on manufacturers in India to create the iPhone, so adding to its already $500 billion investment in the US is likely a way to avoid being impacted by the tariffs. "Today, we're proud to increase our investments across the United States to $600 billion over four years and launch our new American Manufacturing Program," Apple CEO Tim Cook shared in a statement. "This includes new and expanded work with 10 companies across America. They produce components that are used in Apple products sold all over the world, and we're grateful to the President for his support." In February, Apple said its original $500 billion investment plan would go towards building Apple Intelligence servers in the US, and that the majority of the new jobs the funding would provide would be focused on R&D, silicon engineering, software development and AI and machine learning. As part of this additional investment, Apple says it's also deepening its relationship and investment in component makers working in the US, like Corning and Amkor. Corning produces the glass for iPhones and Apple Watches, and the company says that "soon, every iPhone and Apple Watch sold around the world will be built with Kentucky-made cover glass." Apple is investing in Amkor to take advantage of the company's "advanced chip packaging and test facility in Arizona." Apple says its "leading the creation of an end-to-end silicon supply chain in the United States" through its investments. In a statement to Bloomberg before the announcement, a White House spokesperson suggested the new investment would "help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security." The Trump administration has previously called for Apple to make the iPhone in the US, something CNN reports is difficult to downright impossible. Apple's current strategy for dealing with Trump is similar to how it handled the President during his first term. In 2019, Apple CEO Time Cook and Trump "opened" a Mac Pro factory in Texas. The factory had been up-and-running since 2013, but the President was pleased by the optics of making a deal. Apple's partnership with Amkor was similarly announced years ago in 2023, but is being trotted out now because it fits with Apple's "American Manufacturing Program." Apple is a trillion-dollar company that can afford to spend a few billion to avoid paying tariffs, but it also likely planned to increase its investment in the US anyway to keep up with competitors. It's entirely possible the company is just packaging its spending in a way that flatters the President.
