Olympic hockey game schedules set for 2026 Milan Cortina Games
The U.S. women's hockey team will face Czechia in its first game of the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, while the U.S. men play Latvia in their opener.
The women's tournament starts Feb. 5, one day before the Opening Ceremony, and finishes with medal games Feb. 19. The men's tournament starts Feb. 11 (the U.S. opens Feb. 12) and finishes Feb. 22, the day of the Closing Ceremony.
In the women's tournament, the U.S. and Canada have met in six of the seven Olympic finals. Canada is the reigning Olympic champion. The U.S. is the reigning world champion.
They're joined in Group A by Czechia, Switzerland and Finland. At the world championship in April, the U.S. edged Czechia 2-1 in a close semifinal, though the Americans outshot the Czechs 45-11.
OLYMPIC HOCKEY SCHEDULES: Women | Men
All of the Group A teams — the world's five highest-ranked teams — automatically qualify for the quarterfinals and will be seeded based on their group results.
In the men's tournament, NHL players will participate for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Games.
The U.S. is grouped with Latvia, Denmark and Germany.
The three group winners, plus the single best second-place team, advance to the quarterfinals. The other eight teams play in a qualification round to determine the last four quarterfinalists.
Finland won the 2022 Olympic title without NHL players. Canada won the last two Olympics with NHL players. The U.S. last won Olympic men's hockey gold at the 1980 Lake Placid Games.

The USA Today columnist and author ripped the coach of Team USA and the WNBA's Lynx for her 'stunningly bad behavior' heading into the selection process for the 2024 Paris Olympics — specifically her treatment of then-Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. 'How on earth is that OK with the US Olympic and Paralympic community and the USA basketball team that its coach is actively tweeting and going on social media about someone who is in the selection pool?' 'ALSO in action tonight – @minnesotalynx vs @chicagosky. 7 pm CST,' Reeve wrote, 'Though fans won't be able to watch, #Lynx fans can go to the Lynx app to follow along via play by play.' 'Just stunningly bad behavior by Cheryl Reeve, tweeting at and about Caitlin Clark, kind of blaming her for not having Minnesota Lynx games on TV, but only Caitlin games on TV,' Brennan said. A month later, when the 12-woman Team USA roster was revealed, Clark was not on it and Reeve was at the center of questions regarding the selection process. The goal was to create the best team and not weigh in the extra viewers Clark would bring. During the WNBA playoffs last year, Clark was hit in the eye by the Suns' DiJonai Carrington. As the incident gained national attention, Brennan asked if Carrington had intentionally hit her — which swiftly drew the ire of the WNBA players union, which sought to ban her.

Joona Koppanen back in the fold, resigns with Penguins
This article originally appeared on The Pittsburgh Penguins have only gotten glimpses of forward Joona Koppanen at the NHL level, but they apparently have been sufficiently intrigued to give him a new contract. Advertisement In what might be more of an organizational depth signing, the Penguins announced Tuesday that they have signed Koppenen to a one-year contract that is worth $775,000 at the NHL level. It would seem to be a low-risk move that, at the least, could help bolster the organization at the American Hockey League level. Koppanen, 27, is not necessarily part of the expected influx of youth for the Penguins, although he has played just 20 NHL games, with one goal and one assist. He has played 16 of those games with the Penguins over the past two seasons. He had one point, a goal, in 11 games at the NHL level in 2024-25.
