Chile taps Rio Tinto for second major lithium project

Reuters22-05-2025
SANTIAGO, May 22 (Reuters) - Global miner Rio Tinto (RIO.AX), opens new tab has been selected by Chile for the second time this week for a major new lithium project, with state-run mining body ENAMI naming it a partner for its Altoandinos lithium project in a statement on Thursday.
Rio Tinto will initially contribute $425 million to the project, which in total will represent an investment of $3 billion, ENAMI said.
ENAMI will hold an initial stake of 49% and two board seats, with three board seats going to Rio.
For Altoandinos, ENAMI said Rio's investment will cover a pre-feasibility study, use of its pilot plant at its Rincon project in Argentina, and the use of its direct lithium extraction technology.
"Rio Tinto provides a financing option that ensures the necessary resources for the project until it reaches commercial operation," ENAMI said in a statement.
In a separate statement, Rio Tinto said it would focus on "advancing towards binding agreements as quickly as possible" and that feasibility studies would enable a final investment decision.
ENAMI had also considered French miner Eramet, Chinese carmaker BYD and Korean steel group Posco as developers for the project.
"After a thorough analysis, we concluded that the proposal offering the greatest value for ENAMI was Rio Tinto's," said ENAMI head Ivan Mlynarz.
Rio was also selected by state-run copper miner Codelco on Monday for the Maricunga lithium project.

Argentina's Gualcamayo gold mine eyes $665 million investment under incentive program

JACHAL, Argentina, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Argentina's Gualcamayo gold mine is aiming to build a new $665 million project it hopes will qualify for a new government incentive program, executives said in a recent press tour of the site. Only two mining projects, both in lithium, have so far been approved for Argentina's Large Investment Incentive Regime, or RIGI, which went into effect in October under President Javier Milei. Gualcamayo originally proposed a $1 billion investment under the scheme, but scaled back its application in June following government talks about how to best meet the RIGI requirements, Ricardo Martinez, executive director of project owner Minas Argentinas, said in an interview earlier this month. Minas Argentinas, a part of Aisa Group, bought the mine in 2023 when it was close to closing, but now produces 50,000 to 55,000 ounces of gold a year from secondary recovery, a process of leaching ore that has already gone through a first cycle of extraction. The plan includes construction of a new mine, a pressure oxidation plant, and a 50 megawatt solar park to feed the project. RIGI was designed to kick-start investments only through July 2026, with a possible one-year extension. It offers lengthy tax breaks and access to international dispute courts for investments exceeding $200 million. "It's important that we have the RIGI for legal security," Martinez said, adding that the main challenge is for current mining regulations to remain in place. The new mine, called Carbonatos Profundos, will be located under the current one and will produce gold from sulfides rather than oxides. The company aims to produce 120,000 ounces of gold annually starting in 2029 with a 17-year lifespan, yielding about $400 million in exports a year, executives said. Gold production has dipped across Argentina as mines grow older and lose their high-quality ore. Still, the metal is Argentina's top mining export, accounting for 68% of the total. Gualcamayo aims to start construction of the new mine and processing plant in 2027, Martinez said, adding that the mine has 2 million ounces of economically viable gold reserves, part of 5 million ounces of certified resources found in 3% of the 40,000-hectare property. The rest has yet to be explored. Martinez said high global demand and prices for gold have made the company optimistic. "Today, the gold you produce is taken out of your hands," he said.

Peabody scraps $3.8 billion bid for Anglo American's coal mines

LONDON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Peabody Energy (BTU.N), opens new tab on Tuesday withdrew its $3.78 billion bid for Anglo American's (AAL.L), opens new tab Australian coking coal assets after failing to cut the price following a mine fire, with the dispute now set for arbitration. Peabody had agreed to acquire the mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin, the world's top steelmaking coal region, as the London-listed Anglo moved to sell or spin off non-core assets following bigger rival BHP's ( opens new tab failed takeover attempt last year. The aborted sale sets that process back, after Anglo counted the coking coal assets as discontinued operations at its mid-year results in July. Peabody shares rose more than 6% in U.S. premarket trade, while Anglo American initially pared gains sharply after the news before recovering to trade 2.9% higher at 1231 GMT. Operations at the Moranbah North mine were halted in April after an underground fire caused by high gas levels, prompting Peabody to invoke a clause allowing it to walk away or renegotiate if a major adverse event occurred between signing and completion. "The two companies did not reach a revised agreement to cure the MAC (material adverse change) that compensated Peabody for the material and long-term impacts of the MAC on the most significant mine in the planned acquisition," said Peabody President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Grech. Reuters could not immediately establish whether a termination fee would be paid. Anglo on Tuesday said it would "shortly initiate an arbitration to seek damages for wrongful termination," disputing that the fire and mine closure constituted a material adverse change, due to the lack of damage to the mine or equipment and progress made towards restarting it. "We are therefore very disappointed that Peabody has decided not to complete the transaction," said Anglo's CEO Duncan Wanblad. Wanblad reiterated that given strong interest for the assets during the bidding process, Anglo was confident an alternative buyer could be found through a new sales process.

Stockport rise from ghost town to thriving food destination

Almost 15 years ago, Stockport was revealed as having the highest number of empty shops among large towns in the fast forward to the present day and this town centre in Greater Manchester is thriving. Years of investment in regeneration projects are paying off - so much so the town has earned an unlikely nickname as the "new Berlin"."My dad would have come here 20 years ago and he would have called it a ghost town," says James Baygoff, who has lived in the Edgeley area of the borough all his life . "Now, if we drag him to a Foodie Friday he can't believe it. He can't believe his eyes from what it used to be like."Foodie Friday first launched in Stockport 10 years ago - the brainchild of the Barrett family."Foodie Friday is the busiest night in Stockport," says John Barrett. "It's busier for the pubs and venues than New Year's Eve." I can see his point. As I try and work my way round the 25 outdoor food stalls, each offering their own local culinary speciality, it is nearly impossible to move around."Back in the 80s and 90s, Stockport Market and the underbanks were really busy," says John."But obviously with things like the internet and everything else that affected the economy, people stopped coming in." In 2012, Stockport was selected as one of Mary Portas' pilot towns, receiving a £100,000 grant in a government scheme aimed at revitalising town centres. John's son, Joe Barrett, 32, was behind the bid, who used the money to launch the culinary event."Ten years ago I didn't feel that Stockport had anything for me or for people my age," says Joe, who is the deputy leader of the town's Labour Group."Foodie Friday was effectively the catalyst that led to people from around Stockport and the wider region start to see Stockport in a different light." The borough is currently undergoing a £1bn regeneration scheme, the largest in the was the first town to have a mayoral development board, launched by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, has so far attracted £600 million in private investment and delivered 1,200 new homes, 170,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, and a new transport Park, the home of Stockport County Football Club, has also received a £50m expansion approved and just last week, 1,300 new homes for the town centre were given the green light. Last year, the borough was named as one of the best places to live in the north west. The newly-elected Lib Dem council leader meets me in the town's new library, which has undergone an £8m renovation."We have a mature approach [to local politics]," says councillor Mark Roberts, when discussing the fact no political group has overall control of the council."We may disagree on many things, but when it comes to Stockport's regeneration, we all have a shared approach."That doesn't happen everywhere." In June, Mr Burnham announced the long-awaited tram extension would be coming to the a direct route to London Euston and a seven-minute train journey to Manchester Piccadilly, the borough clearly has its geographical growing commuter links, the town is attracting young professionals - amongst them is Anya, who bought a home with her partner in says "there is a wave of optimism in Stockport" which is clearly evident during my visit to the town.
