Three Highlanders named in new look Māori All Blacks
The Māori All Blacks have a new captain and 11 uncapped players for two matches against the Japan XV in Tokyo and Scotland in Whangārei.
Hooker Kurt Eklund (Ngāti Kahu) in his first time as Māori All Blacks captain will lead a 29-strong squad that includes new caps, which range from 20-year-old Blues midfielder Xavi Taele, the youngest member of the squad, to 31-year-old Gisborne-born, Taranaki prop Jared Proffit.
Head coach Ross Filipo said 32-year-old Aucklander Eklund was the right fit for captain.
"This team demands a strong leader with mana, and Kurt has shown that quality and more over a long period of time, for the Māori All Blacks, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and the Blues. He has a lot of experience throughout the squad and that will be a strength for what will be two tough matches."
Māori Rugby board member Rob Clark (Waikato, Ngāti Tiipa) said the team and the board had a role in protecting the kaupapa and the identity of Māori rugby.
"Māori rugby is the vehicle we use to express our indigenous identity. It holds the health and wellbeing of our people at the forefront, following in the pathways that have been paved before us and those that will follow. This team allows us to express our kaupapa to the world, to inspire all people and protect the taonga that is rugby in Aotearoa."
The squad has assembled in Auckland to begin their campaign preparations before leaving for Japan on 25 June.
The game againt the Japan XV in Tokyo is on 28 June and Scotland in Whangarei on 5 July. Māori All Blacks squad

The clubs meet in the 1v2 quarterfinal, with the winners progressing straight to the final and the losers getting a life. It is a repeat of both the 2023 (Valley won 26-23) and 2024 (Excelsior won 20-19) Citizens Shield finals, and the sides split their regular-season clashes this year, Blues winning 28-16 in the first round and Valley triumphing 20-13 in the second. "Last year, down to the wire in the final, and the year before, down to the wire in the final," Excelsior coach Jason Forrest said. "Even this year, we're 1-1 again, so it's back to the drawing board. "We know each other well. And we know exactly how difficult it's going to be for us to get the result we're after this weekend." Excelsior had qualified second but been a mixed bag this season, Forrest felt. "Apart from a couple of really good performances, we probably haven't played the sort of rugby we would like to be playing at times this year. "We've been inconsistent at times, but in saying that, we've got a lot of motivation to go back to back and we're staying pretty positive around where we're heading." Blues winger Seva Druma leads the competition with 11 tries, and experienced first five Josh Phipps has the most points (136). Oli Knopp — who has made the rare move from fullback to No 8 — has been a revelation in recent weeks, veteran Tom Shields has shored up the front row, and youngster Liam Direen has impressed at fullback. Forrest said he had huge respect for a Valley team buoyant after eight straight wins. Valley have their relentless veteran core of Cameron Rowland, Jake Greenslade, Jake Matthews and Matt Vocea, and have also got some oomph from visiting Japanese players Gaku Shmizu and Kippei Taninaka. "They're just a well-drilled, disciplined, well-coached side that do everything well," Forrest said. "They're hard to break down, and they play for each other, and they're fit. Māori All Blacks team named for Japan XV clash

As well as the new faces, a new skipper will take the helm in the form of hooker Kurt Eklund. Head Coach Ross Filipo said he's been thoroughly impressed with the players returning after their respective Super Rugby campaigns. "It's a tight turnaround for us with plenty of our players in the final on Saturday night and then coming straight into this environment. Selections were tough, and our coaching group spent quite some time together to make sure we had the right mix to take the field in Tokyo. We are determined to right a wrong from our last game in Aichi in 2024." Eklund anchors the scrum with debutant Jacob Devery as impact, alongside props 31-year-old Jared Proffit and Kershawl Sykes-Martin in his debut. Isaia Walker-Leawere and Laghlan McWhannell make up the locking duo, while Jahrome Brown and Te Kamaka Howden have been named in the loose forwards. Cullen Grace completes an experienced forward pack at number eight. Three-time Māori All Black Sam Nock comes in as halfback and after a stellar Super Rugby Pacific season, Rivez Reihana has been named as first-five. Auckland City goalscorer on 'dream' result against Boca Juniors
Auckland City FC defender Christian Gray has described his goal-scoring experience at the FIFA Club World Cup as "somewhat of a dream". The 28-year-old trainee teacher scored in the amateur side's clash against Argentine giants Boca Juniors, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Gray also took the Player of the Match award. Following this morning's game, Gisborne-born Gray said: "I'm from a small town, a long way from here and a lot different to this environment. So, it is somewhat of a dream," The draw was a positive ending to a tough campaign for Auckland, which entered the competition as the only non-professional side. In their opening match, the team suffered a 10-0 thrashing against German Giants Bayern Munich and a 6-0 loss to Portugal's Benfica. 'It's been a tough trip, we've had some tough results, but [I'm] just happy for the team, for the boys,' Gray said. ADVERTISEMENT He hoped "we got a little bit of respect back" with today's result. "I think we deserve it." Today's result meant "a lot" for everyone involved with the Kiwitea St Club. "We don't have a lot of money, so I'm just happy that they're happy." He said it was "a little bit" of an overwhelming moment. "I don't love the spotlight, leave that for the other boys… [I'm] a little bit lost for words." With the tournament having ended for Auckland, Gray said it was time to get home and get back into the classroom.
