Huawei tops China smartphone market after 4 years amid US curbs
The Shenzhen-based company secured 18.1% of the market in Q2 2025, shipping 12.5 million units despite ongoing US export controls and economic headwinds.
China's overall smartphone shipments declined by 4% year-on-year to 69 million units, ending six consecutive quarters of growth.
Arthur Guo, a senior IDC analyst, noted, 'Despite the recent US-China trade truce, the broader economic environment presents ongoing challenges, with consumer confidence remaining subdued.'
Huawei's resurgence follows years of US sanctions that restricted its access to critical technologies, pushing the firm to develop in-house solutions.
Meanwhile, Apple dropped to fifth place with a 13.9% market share, reflecting weakening iPhone demand in China.
The tech giant's rebound highlights its resilience amid geopolitical tensions, though analysts caution that smartphone demand may remain sluggish in the near term. – AFP

Cloudaron plans RM38mil sale of subsidiaries to Sweden's Abelco
PETALING JAYA: Cloudaron Group Bhd has entered into a non-binding term sheet with Sweden-based Abelco Investment Group AB for the proposed disposal of its entire equity interests in Cloudaron Pte Ltd (CPL) and DACS Network Solutions Sdn Bhd. CPL is primarily involved in software development for interactive digital media and investment holding, while DACS is engaged in telecommunications equipment trading and IT hardware distribution. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Cloudaron said both parties have agreed to a valuation of 7.8mil euros or RM38.39mil for 100% of the issued and paid-up capital in the two subsidiaries. The disposal will be undertaken through the issuance of 17.94 billion new ordinary shares in Abelco at an issue price of 5 Swedish ore or about 22 sen per consideration share. Cloudaron said the proposed disposal is expected to enhance its ability to raise new capital in the European market to fund future growth. It also plans to leverage Abelco's existing technology network in Europe to expand its reach to global customers. The group noted the term sheet is non-binding and is not expected to have any material impact on its earnings at this stage. Abelco is a Swedish public-listed investment firm and venture builder with exposure in digital sectors such as gaming, e-sports, e-commerce and fintech.

Malaysia-China visa exemption boosts tourism and business ties
KUALA LUMPUR: The mutual visa exemption between Malaysia and China marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, fostering stronger economic and cultural exchanges. Datuk Keith Li, President of the China Entrepreneurs' Association in Malaysia, hailed the move as a positive step that will deepen ties between the two nations. 'It's really a positive step that fosters stronger ties between the two nations,' said Li, who operates a travel agency specialising in China-Malaysia trips. The agreement simplifies travel, encouraging more visitors and business collaborations. According to Malaysia China Insight, a bilingual online magazine, Chinese tourist arrivals in Malaysia have surged by more than a third this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The visa waiver has particularly benefited individual travellers and families. Chinese tourist Hong Na shared her relief over the new policy. 'Before, getting a visa required planning months ahead. It was a hassle. Now, we can just pack our bags and go whenever we want,' she said. Echo Liu, another Chinese traveller, echoed the sentiment, saying the exemption eased her first overseas trip. 'We were nervous about visas and language barriers, but everything has been smooth,' she added. The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia announced on Wednesday (July 16) that Malaysian citizens can now enjoy visa-free entry to China for short-term visits of up to 90 days within 180 days. The policy took effect on Thursday (July 17). Under the agreement, Malaysian and Chinese passport holders can enter, exit, or transit through each other's countries without a visa for stays of up to 30 days per visit. The deal was finalised during Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Kuala Lumpur in April. - Bernama
