Call for beach measures to protect feeding birds

BBC News31-01-2025
Ornithologists have called for restrictions on beaches to allow migratory birds to feed.Mick Dryden of Jersey Birds said he would like to see parts of two or three of Jersey's beaches set aside so birds from northern climates could safely feed without disturbance. He said that could involve dogs being kept on leads as the birds expended much-needed energy when disturbed.Species including Brent Geese, Turnstone, Oystercatchers and Curlews arrive in the island during autumn from countries such as Canada, Iceland and Russia to feed up on seagrass before they return to their breeding grounds.
Mr Dryden said: "They're all coming here for one reason - and that is to survive the winter. He added: "These birds are dependent for their survival on being able to feed at these places."If constant disturbances are preventing them from doing that, then the birds can't be in a good enough condition to migrate the thousands of miles back north where they're going to breed - and the end product is that they don't."He said the birds could only feed at low tide so their time was limited."If their time is spent flying around because people are disturbing them then they're not feeding and are burning up energy instead of gaining it," he said.He said he would like to see a part of Grouville Bay protected during the winter for feeding birds but other parts of a couple of beaches during the summer months when some species breed.

'Squid Game' Hits #1 on Netflix with Release of New Season—But Wait'll You See Its Confusing Rotten Tomatoes Score

Season three of Squid Game has finally arrived, and once again, it has fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes divided despite the season instantly hitting the number one spot on Netflix. The popular show about a life-or-death competition, which has been a hit since the premiere of its first season, debuted its final season to mostly positive reviews, with an 82 percent Tomatometer rating, but the audience rating is a bleak one, sitting at a tough 50 percent—or 2.9 out of 5 stars—on the Popcornmeter. The official synopsis for the third season is described as "Seong Gi-hun and the players fighting for survival in ever-deadlier games." And while critics and audience members seemed to agree that the first season was nearly flawless, it's been much more complicated from there, as season two received a fresh 82 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, but a dull 63 percent—or 3.4 out of 5 stars—on the Popcornmeter, making the audience rating for this third season even worse. This divide is further reflected in the reviews posted on the platform, which are largely positive. On the opposite end, the audience members are much more critical. "Squid Game Season three is a mess. It doesn't explain anything that was left hanging in season two, and the main character's decisions are confusing and inconsistent. This season lacks a proper conclusion, leaving more questions than answers," writes one member. Another adds, "Squid Game season three feels like a shadow of its former self. Unlike the gripping pace of seasons one and two, this one drags, with slow storytelling and little payoff." Netflix PureWow's VP of News and Entertainment, Philip Mutz, had this to say before the premiere of season three, "I was beyond ready for the arrival of the second season. But then came the fan reactions. Audiences weren't as into it for a variety of reasons, and its Popcornmeter (AKA viewer) score on Rotten Tomatoes sat at a dismal 63 percent. This was almost enough to keep me from diving into the sophomore season…but I'm so glad I dove in anyway." While it certainly looks like viewers of the show's latest season have mixed feelings, I'll be tuning in soon so I can judge for myself. Meghan Markle releases As Ever rosé — but you'll have to spend over $100 to get it

Meghan Markle has officially launched her As Ever brand rosé — and with quite a steep price tag. The 2023 Napa Valley Rosé starts at $90 for three bottles, plus $20 flat-rate shipping, meaning you'll have to spend $110 total to try it. Shoppers can also opt for a six-bottle package for $159 or a 12-bottle case for $300. The bottles will begin shipping July 9. However, shipping isn't available in all U.S. states. Those in Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Mississippi, Rhode Island, and Utah who were hoping to try Meghan's newest product will have to wait. And in Hawaii, shipping is only available to the counties of Hawaii and Kauai. International shipping is also unavailable. Still, the hefty price tag didn't appear to deter shoppers, as the rosé sold out in less than an hour. The rosé marks Meghan's first alcoholic offering. 'With soft notes of stone fruit, gentle minerality and a lasting finish, this bespoke blend is launching just in time for summer entertaining,' a description for the rosé reads. Meghan's foray into alcoholic beverages comes as the company restocked some of its products in June after selling out in less than an hour during the initial April launch. Among those products were $15 Flower Sprinkles, $14 Crepe Mix, $14 Shortbread Cookie Mix with Flower Sprinkles, and $12 Herbal Teas in three flavors: hibiscus, lemon ginger, and peppermint. The teas, however, have since sold out again. As Ever's June re-launch also introduced two new products: a $28 Limited-Edition Orange Blossom Honey and a $9 Apricot Spread. Both products also quickly sold out. While Meghan didn't restock her viral $9 Raspberry Spread, it will be coming back soon, according to As Ever's website. The restocks and new products follow Meghan's public questioning of her brand. A Page Six report from early June revealed Meghan will be adding 'hospitality services in the nature of provision of food and drink' and 'hospitality services in the nature of provision of temporary accommodation' to her business, likely in the form of eventual restaurants and hotels. Only weeks earlier, the Duchess said in an interview with Fast Company that she was planning to take a 'step back, gather data from the launch, and figure out exactly what As Ever could be.' 'I want to really focus on the hospitality angle of As Ever, but as we take the learnings, we can understand what the customer's needs are seasonally,' Meghan told the publication. 'My heart is very deeply in my home. Everything comes from being rooted in the love story of your home and garden, and then you can imagine different verticals coming out of that.' Asked whether she might explore moving into clothing one day, Meghan responded: 'Fashion is a category I plan to explore down the line because I find it to be an intriguing space for me.'
