Man dies, five houses destroyed in Bintulu fires
KUCHING: The atmosphere of the Gawai Day celebration in Sarawak was marred when a man died while five terrace houses were destroyed in two separate fire incidents that occurred in Bintulu early this morning.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations centre (PGO), the first incident on Saturday night left 21 people homeless, while another fire early Sunday morning claimed the life of one victim
In the first incident, five single-storey terrace houses of the permanent structure were 100 per cent destroyed in a fire at Kidurong MLNG Housing, Jalan Abang Usop, Bintulu, on Saturday night.
The emergency call was received at 11.43 pm on Saturday before 18 JBPM personnel from the Kidurong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) and Bintulu BBP managed to extinguish the fire at 6.25 am today.
In the second incident, a man identified as Wong Jun Din in his 50s was confirmed dead in a fire at a non-permanent house on Jalan Sibiew, near SJK Siong Boon at 2:32 am Sunday.
'The victim is believed to have been trapped but was successfully pulled out by other residents in an unconscious state with burn marks all over his body, before being confirmed dead by the Ministry of Health medical team at the scene,' said a statement on the PGO's official WhatsApp.
Three other occupants were reported to have survived the incident.
The cause of the fire and the total loss from both incidents are still under investigation.

Bayan Lepas blaze kills 19 goats, damages cars and lorry near shed; cause under probe
GEORGE TOWN, June 2 — Nineteen goats were killed when the livestock shed they were placed in caught fire in Kampung Jawa Bayan Lepas here today. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director (Operations) John Sagun Francis said they received an emergency call at 12.58 pm about the fire and that 19 goats placed in the shed died while only one was rescued. He said the fire also affected three cars and a one-tonne lorry parked near the shed, with damage to the vehicles estimated at between 30 and 90 per cent. He added that the nine-man team from the Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station took nearly an hour to put out the blaze. Firemen rescue two exhausted hikers at Teluk Bahang Forest Park
BALIK PULAU: Two hikers suffering from dehydration and fatigue while climbing a hill at Teluk Bahang Forest Park, here, were rescued by the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel yesterday night. Penang JBPM Fire and Rescue Operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said the man and woman, aged 40 and 34 respectively, contacted the department at 6.40 pm, informing them they were feeling weak. 'Firefighters from the Teluk Bahang Fire and Rescue Station were immediately sent to the scene after the victims shared their location via WhatsApp, indicating they were at Station 10 of the Teluk Bahang Forest Park. 'The firefighters hiked to the location and successfully found both individuals in an exhausted state. They were safely brought down to the foot of the hill at 10.51 pm,' he said in a statement. Both victims were later handed over to the medical team for further treatment.
