'Joe Root Will Be Cursed!': Bold Prediction As Stunning Stat Claims England Star Will Surpass Sachin Tendulkar
Joe Root has been predicted to become Test cricket's all-time leading run-getter and judging from the current trend, it has been claimed that his legacy will remain unchallenged. India legend Sachin Tendulkar currently holds the record for having scored the most runs in Test cricket history with 15,921 runs from 200 games. Root, who is 34, has taken his tally to 13270 and should he manage to maintain his current form and level of fitness, can even surpass Tendulkar.
Root, a former England captain, is right now fifth on the list with Rahul Dravid (13,288), Jacques Kallis (13,289), and Ricky Ponting (13,378) ahead of him.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels that Root has four year of cricket ahead of him and will have accumulated 19,000 Test runs by the time he retires.
'Look at his (Root) age," Shastri said while commentating for Sky Sports during the second day of the 4th Test between India and England currently underway in Manchester. 'Look at the number of matches. He's played 157 (Tests). So you would imagine he would go past three (players) ahead of him in almost three Test matches."
'And then he's got about 40 Test matches. Sachin has played 200 Tests. Root has played 160 (157). He's still young. He has four years of cricket ahead of him. And what will separate him and Tendulkar will be around 3,000 runs. When you're hot, you're hot. In the meantime, he has age on his side," he added.
Former England captain Michael Atherton, who was also on air, joined the conversation revealing that Sky Sports statistician Benedict Bermange has informed him that Root has 60.28% chance of breaking Tendulkar's record.
'Benedict reliably informed me that he's got a 60.28% chance of beating Sachin Tendulkar. I don't know how he worked that out," Atherton said.
Shastri chimed in.
'I tell you that it won't be music to the ears of the Indians. It's just coming about to bedtime in India, and you've given us a stat – 60.28," he quipped.
'He'll be cursed. Millions of homes around Mumbai right now," added Atherton.
Root's Legacy Will Be Unchallenged
Atherton then made a bold prediction: If and once Root breaks the record, it's unlikely that anyone will surpass that since the interest in Test cricket continues to diminish.
'Wherever Joe Root finishes, say, for example, he went past Sachin. I'm not so sure anybody will go past that just because of the nature of the way the game is going. People will play fewer Test matches, I would imagine, in the years to come," Atherton said.
Shastri agreed and said it will act as a fuel.
'…that's what's going to drive him. He knows that. He will know that more than anybody else. The way the game is going, the three formats of the game," Shastri said.

Decathlon aims to scale sourcing from India to USD 3 bn by 2030
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) French sports retailer Decathlon on Tuesday said it will increase sourcing of goods from India for its global operations to USD 3 billion by 2030. Decathlon has been sourcing from India for the last 25 years and is committed to its 'Make in India" vision and its focus on local production capabilities to serve both domestic and global markets, the company said. This growth will be driven by a focused push in high-potential categories such as footwear, fitness equipment, and technical textiles, which will be designed to meet the evolving demands of both Indian consumers and global markets, it added. 'Currently, India accounts for 8 per cent of Decathlon's global sourcing quantities," the French retailer in a statement, adding that the goal is to scale this to 15 per cent by 2030. For the India retail operations, Decathlon's local sourcing is over 70 per cent of the quantities sold in India in 2025. 'This figure is expected to rise to 90 per cent by 2030, reinforcing the brand's focus on its local sourcing strategy," according to Decathlon. Decathlon's local production ecosystem includes a Design Centre supported by 113 manufacturing sites, 83 suppliers, and 7 production offices across India. 'India has evolved into a cornerstone of Decathlon's global production ecosystem — not just in terms of scale, but in its ability to deliver quality, innovation, and speed," Frederic Merlevede, Head of Decathlon Production said. Merlevede further noted that, 'Our long-term investment in India reflects the deep trust we've built with our partners and the strong potential we see in key categories like footwear, fitness equipment, and beyond". Last year, Decathlon had announced to invest 100 million euros (around Rs 933 crore) in India, it is one of the fastest growing markets, to expand retail footprint and manufacturing operations. Decathlon currently operates 132 stores across 55 cities in India. In FY'24 Decathlon generated over Rs 4,000 crore revenue in India and became profitable in FY24 posting gains of Rs 197.19 crore, according to an RoC filing by the company. Decathlon Sports India Pvt Ltd has reported its revenue from operations at Rs 4,008.26 crore, up 2.24 per cent for the financial year ended March 31, 2024. Satwik-Chirag return to top 10 in BWF rankings; Lakshya, Unnati climb in singles
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty returned to top 10 in the BWF mens' doubles World Rankings released on Tuesday, climbing three spots following their semifinal finish at the China Open last week. The former world No. 1 duo, now ranked 10th, lost to the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 13-21, 17-21 in the semifinals. This was their third semifinal appearance on the BWF Tour this season, having earlier reached the last four at the Singapore Open and India Open. The Indian pair had reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking after the title win at the Thailand Open last year. In men's singles, top-ranked Indian Lakshya Sen moved up two places to No. 17 with 54,442 points, just ahead of China's Zhenxiang Wang, who jumped five spots to 18.
