Glasgow Times21-05-2025

The newest branch of the authentic Neapolitan pizzeria chain will open on Pollokshaws Road at 11.30am on Wednesday, May 21 in the unit previously occupied by Di Maggio's.
The Glasgow Times was invited down to Shawlands to get a sneak peek inside the new restaurant ahead of its opening.

Paul Laing (Image: Newsquest) Paul Laing, general manager, told the Glasgow Times: "We're really excited.
"We had a soft launch which went fantastically well and [on Wednesday] from 11.30am we're fully open to the public.
"The response and anticipation in the local area have been great to say the least.
"Neighbours and other local businesses around have all been really supportive.
"There's a good buzz about the area, and we're looking forward to getting started."
(Image: Newsquest) Sitting in the restaurant on Tuesday afternoon, that buzz was clear to see as passers-by pressed their faces up against the window for a look inside, or popped their head in the front door to ask when the restaurant would be opening.
Despite being the smallest of Paesano's three restaurants, the new location has 65 covers and is bringing 40 jobs to the area.
We previously reported hospitality giant DRG had announced ambitions for a "major expansion" of Paesano and Sugo after the company acquired the brands for what was believed to be an eight-figure sum last year.
In November, it was reported that planning permission was being sought for the unit at the corner of Minard Road to be transformed into the city's third Paesano.

(Image: Newsquest) Speaking of the brand's popularity, Paul said: "Paesano in Glasgow is synonymous with fantastic pizza, great quality, fresh ingredients.
"We source only the best, we've got the best guys in the kitchen cooking the pizzas, so for me personally it's a brand that doesn't have any limits.
"You could take this to any city in the UK and I believe it would do really well."
He added: "The Southside is a real up and and coming area, it grows year on year and everyone wants to live here now so why wouldn't we want to be a part of that growth?"
(Image: Newsquest) Occupying a corner unit with large windows, the new restaurant is nice and bright and its smaller size offers diners a more intimate experience.
Customers will be able to see their pizza being freshly made, with some seats looking into the pizza chefs' station.
On the outside of the building, old signage which was previously hidden by Di Maggio's frontage has been uncovered and will now be visible.
First opening in 2015, Paesano quickly became a beloved institution across the city with its simple menu of 10 pizza options and regularly changing specials.
The wood-fired pizzas use the finest Italian ingredients and are cooked in ovens built by artisans in Naples.
Paesano Southside is located at 1038-1040 Pollokshaws Road.

Tesco set to change opening hours in some stores in the UK

The supermarket giant is reportedly looking to trial earlier closing times in different stores across the UK. It comes after the company was hit by a large rise in staff costs. Tesco said the change is to ensure these shops are running "in the most efficient way". Tesco set to change opening hours to stores in the UK A Tesco spokesperson told Newsquest said: 'Our Express format is a strong and growing business, providing great value and convenience for customers on their doorstep. "In a small number of stores, we are trialling some tweaks to our operational routines to make things simpler for our colleagues and to ensure that we are running these shops in the most efficient way. "These changes aren't visible to our customers, who will continue to receive the same great service they expect, and there are no changes to the range of products we sell.' The Express stores will remain branded the same way and there will be no redundancies. The Telegraph reports that the chosen Tesco Express stores will be shutting an hour earlier, at 10pm rather than 11pm. 5 ways to save money on your weekly food shop It is not confirmed which stores will be affected, however, the Telegraph claims workers have been told the trial is taking place in some of Tesco's "less profitable stores". It is also understood that Tesco will be speaking to colleagues ahead of any changes to roles, including possible transfers. The change to opening hours comes after Tesco's chief executive, Ken Murphy, said that the supermarket needed to offset a number of extra costs following the Spring budget. In April, Tesco said it was facing a large rise in its staffing bill, which included an increase of £235m in National Insurance contributions in the latest financial year. Various changes at Tesco stores The trialling of new hours is not the only change at Tesco stores in the UK. Tesco has become the latest supermarket to roll out new "VAR-style" checkouts in some of its stores. The new self-service checkout systems feature a camera that records customers scanning and packing their shopping. Earlier this month, Sainsbury's also rolled out its own "VAR-style" checkouts. Tesco shoppers have also recently discovered a major change to bakery sections across stores in the UK. Customers have spotted notices being put up in bakeries stating that from 7pm, loose bakery products will be slashed to half price. What's the Difference Between Best Before and Use-By? It's been reported that this used to take place at 5pm, but it's been moved back by two hours, according to The Sun. The supermarket giant, which makes reductions to bakery items every day to help reduce food waste, confirmed to Newsquest that pastries and sweet treats are usually discounted at around 7pm, however, timings can vary by store. Tesco is also considering a major change at checkouts and to all products, according to Retail Gazette. If successful, the move would see Tesco replace hundreds of product barcodes with QR code technology in its latest digital modernisation. The new scanning feature would provide shoppers with important nutritional information about the product they are buying.

Scottish Water workers begin week of strike action amid pay deal row

Members of GMB Scotland and other unions are striking from Monday for seven consecutive days at the publicly-owned organisation, with a mass rally planned in Glasgow on Wednesday. Workers at GMB Scotland backed industrial action after the water company reduced the terms of a pay offer that had already been rejected, according to the union, which claimed that executives received record bonuses last year. (Image: Image: Newsquest) Unionised staff voted against an offer of 3.4% or £1,400 covering the last nine months as the company changed the date for annual rises from July to April. The company branded industrial action 'unnecessary' and said seven offers have been made since June 2024. Scottish Water's latest offer would see an average pay increase of around 7% over two years (2024/25 and 2025/26), in addition to a 3.5% yearly salary increase. It called for 'sensible' negotiations from the unions, rejecting suggestions that emergency works would be impacted. READ NEXT: Keir Starmer pledges to raise defence spending but won't rule out other cuts In a marginal majority, 51% of Unison workers employed by the water supplier voted to reject the pay offer, and 49% voted to accept. The turnout was 86%. GMB said 60% of its members voted against the offer, and 40% chose to accept, on a turnout of 78%, while statistics were not provided by Unison. Now, Scottish ministers are being urged to get involved in the dispute, which began in June 2024. (Image: Image: Newsquest) GMB Scotland organiser Claire Greer wrote to secretary for net zero Gillian Martin, raising concerns about the failure to resolve the dispute. Ms Greer said: 'It is impossible to know whether Scottish Water is playing games or simply inept, but the relentless progress of this dispute towards industrial action could have been halted at any time with open and straightforward negotiations. 'Instead, we have been given a series of needlessly complicated offers, one worse than the last, as managers spend more time attempting to undermine staff unions than delivering a fair offer. 'It needs to stop and if Scottish Water do not know how, ministers must explain public money is being risked by a dispute that should have been settled months ago. 'The public deserves better and workers deserve a fair pay offer.' READ NEXT: Scottish Labour Councillor defects to Reform UK Peter Farrer, chief operating officer at Scottish Water, said: 'This week's industrial action is unnecessary. It will mean union members losing valuable wages and add extra costs to the business which are ultimately paid for by customers. 'We invited the joint trade unions to talk over the weekend but unfortunately they refused to meet without preconditions. 'Given how close the vote against our latest pay offer was, we felt a resolution was possible and would be welcomed by all our colleagues. 'It is now time for the joint trade union leadership to return to the table with a sensible solution that ends this dispute. 'In the meantime, we have robust plans in place to maintain essential services should the trade unions press ahead with their strike action.' A Scottish Government spokesperson said: 'Ministers have set out their policy in relation to public sector pay. 'It is a matter for Scottish Water and its unions to agree a settlement within the constraints of that policy and affordability. 'The Scottish Government urges both parties to resume negotiations to find an agreement.'

Chelsea put 14 players up for sale including England star and forgotten £45m ace

Chelsea are expected to be busy in the summer transfer market as they bid to freshen up Enzo Maresca's squad after securing qualification for next season's Champions League Chelsea will embark on a mass summer clear-out after clinching a golden ticket to next season's Champions League, with Enzo Maresca and Co ready to part ways with a staggering 14 first-team stars. The Blues will return to Europe's premier competition next year after finishing fourth in the Premier League. And Maresca is set to be backed in the transfer market after finishing his maiden campaign at the helm with a flourish - and a trophy - in last week's Europa Conference League final. ‌ But while the Londoners will be seeking reinforcements to bolster the Italian's playing squad, a number of players will be offloaded in the coming months. ‌ As per The Guardian, Noni Madueke and Joao Felix are among those Chelsea want to shift; the latter arrived on a permanent basis for £45million after a positive loan spell in 2023 but was farmed out to AC Milan for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign and is free to leave for good. Madueke enjoyed a positive season, scoring 11 goals in all competitions and winning his first England caps. But the report adds there is a feeling that the former PSV Eindhoven man's 'development has stalled'. A whole host of other stars are effectively up for sale according to the report, including both of the Blues' senior goalkeepers: Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic. Renato Veiga, Ben Chilwell, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana are also available for the right price and, 12 months from the club's last attempt to offload him, Trevoh Chalobah's future is once again unclear. In midfield, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu are all available; Dewsbury-Hall followed Maresca in swapping Leicester for the Blues but has struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge. ‌ Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling - who endured a disappointing campaign on loan at Arsenal - have also been deemed surplus to requirements and can move subject to satisfactory bids. In terms of incomings, Chelsea have opened talks with Borussia Dortmund over a transfer for Jamie Gittens, the England Under-21 winger who has also been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool. It remains to be seen if the Blues will trigger their £25m obligation to sign Jadon Sancho permanently, with the club able to back out of a deal at the cost of a £5m penalty.
