Offshore wind plan to boost Welsh economy and jobs

Unveiled by the Welsh Government's Offshore Wind task and finish group, the strategy sets out steps to harness more than 15GW of offshore wind capacity.
It follows the announcement of two successful floating wind projects totalling 3GW in the Celtic Sea, with a third site expected to bring the total to 4.5GW.
Ajai Ahluwalia, head of supply chain at RenewableUK, said: "We are pleased to see clear, practical actions that respond directly to industry calls for greater certainty, stronger collaboration, and urgent delivery.
"Offshore wind is one of the UK's greatest industrial opportunities — with the potential to transform Wales' heartland sectors, like steel and advanced manufacturing.
"To unlock that value, we must now move swiftly from planning to implementation — and industry stands ready to work with government to make it happen."
The plan includes long-term revenue support, planning reforms, port upgrades, and supply chain development.
It also calls for streamlined regulatory processes and a dedicated Welsh Ports Prospectus to attract investment and promote infrastructure.
The Welsh Government will establish an implementation team to ensure the plan is delivered.

"It's also important that we review our housing plans constantly to ensure that the criteria reflect the true situation for the people of Gwynedd. House prices have risen enormously over the last few years we have listened, and now the Gwynedd Homebuy scheme in some circumstances can help towards buying houses worth £350,000. Working together with the Welsh Government and Tai Teg means that we can combine our resources and reach even more people throughout Gwynedd.

Older people in Wales learning how to use technology

Housing association residents across Wales are gaining independence and confidence through the Welsh Government's Minimum Digital Living Standard (MDLS) scheme, which aims to give everyone the digital tools and skills they need to take part in modern life. The MDLS pilot, developed with input from the public and organisations, was launched by Monmouthshire Housing Association and North Wales Housing Association. Following its success, the Welsh Government has expanded the scheme to more housing providers across the country. Michele Morgan, director of housing and communities at Monmouthshire Housing, said: "We were delighted to welcome cabinet secretary for social justice, Jane Hutt, and the older persons commissioner, Rhian Bowen-Davies, to our older persons housing in Caldicot to hear first-hand the impact the pilot is having on our residents and digital volunteers. "At the heart of the pilot was our goal to ensure no resident is left behind, and we are already seeing the significant difference it is making to their daily lives and wellbeing. "Residents previously unsure about technology have become more digitally savvy; signing up to our tenant app to manage their own online accounts and feeling more connected with friends and family. "We know there is still lots to do and will continue to work together with the Welsh Government and partners to actively combat digital isolation in Wales." The scheme is particularly helping tenants affected by the switch from analogue to digital telephone services and those transitioning from Employment and Support Allowance to Universal Credit. Jane Hutt, cabinet secretary for social justice, said: "It was inspiring to visit Monmouthshire and hear these stories firsthand. "The Minimum Digital Living Standard recognises that it's about more than internet access – people also need the right tools, services and skills to take part fully in modern life." One resident, who had never used a computer before, now browses the internet and sends emails after receiving a donated laptop and training. Another, in his 70s, received his first mobile phone and now uses it to take photos, send messages, and stay in touch with family.

Council to Showcase Electric 4x4 at Denbigh and Flint Show

A UK first electric 4×4 is getting a taste of the Denbighshire highlands at the Denbigh and Flint Show. Morag the Munro will take centre stage at Denbighshire Fleet Services stand at the 2025 show on August 21. Sporting a front bumper pair of horns in homage to its roots from Scottish lands, visitors young and old will be able to meet and greet with the new addition that will soon become a familiar site moving across the terrain of the Clwydian Range. Morag's arrival, the first of its kind anywhere in the UK, has been made possible by funding from the Welsh Government's Energy Service and the need to replace a fossil fuel-powered pick-up truck that has reached the end of its fleet life. This addition is part of the Council's continuing drive to reduce its Fleet carbon footprint. The Munro Series-M M280, will be used by the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscapes rangers to help with daily duties on the hills and will be based at Loggerheads County Park. It has a 'real-world' electric driving range of 170 miles, a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and is the first series production vehicle from Scotland in more than 40 years. Named Morag for its similar nature to its Highland cattle counterparts, the Munro was chosen for its ability to tackle the terrain of the Clwydians and other hilly sites, having been thoroughly tested on all types of off-road situations and being able to handle gradients above 40 degrees. Introducing the Munro is part of Denbighshire County Council's ongoing effort to reduce fleet carbon emissions, improve air quality, and lower long-term maintenance and service costs by replacing end-of-life vehicles with proven electric vehicle equivalents. Councillor Barry Mellor, lead member for environment and transport, said: 'Morag is going to be a great addition for supporting the rangers with work across the Clwydian terrain and will be easy to spot by visitors to the area as well. It's also fantastic to have what is a UK first, home nations developed EV vehicle now helping maintain Denbighshire landscapes. 'This new addition will provide greener and cleaner mileage at a lower fuel cost and with the general maintenance costs less as well, will provide long term savings. 'It's a fitting vehicle to operate within this area of outstanding natural beauty and I would encourage all to come and see Morag and chat to our fleet staff to learn more at the show.'
