Jonnu Smith trade grades: Who won the Steelers and Dolphins deal?

USA Today30-06-2025
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins were busy wheeling and dealing on Monday morning.
First, Pittsburgh and Miami exchanged All-Pro-caliber defensive backs when Jalen Ramsey was sent off to the Steel City, while star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick officially made his return to Miami, the city he spent his rookie NFL season in. It's a fascinating deal, but it's the one we're here to talk about.
Because in another trade stacked on top of that one, the Steelers acquired 2024 Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. For the Dolphins, they avoid paying (or extending) Smith. From a football fit, it's an intriguing reunion for Smith and his former Falcons coach, Arthur Smith, who now coordinates the Steelers offense.
Let's unpack this weird deal and see where the Steelers and Dolphins now stand.
Trade details
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter:
Pittsburgh Steelers
This kinda feels like ... a steal for the Steelers?
I'm aware Smith is coming off a career season at the age of 29. He isn't guaranteed to replicate Pro Bowl-level production in any shape or form. However, sending him to Pittsburgh means he's going to work with Arthur Smith again, someone who coached him both in Atlanta and Tennessee. If there's anyone who understands how to make Jonny Smith a consistent focal point of an offense, it's Arthur Smith. And while he's pretty long in the tooth, Aaron Rodgers has always enjoyed utilizing a tight end up the seam as a pass target. The fit makes sense.
Getting Smith for the princely sum of a draft pick swap and a short extension is a smart but underrated move for Pittsburgh.
Grade: B+
Miami Dolphins
Uh ... sure?
In a make-or-break season for Tua Tagovailoa and Mike McDaniel, I don't think the Dolphins are in a position to be trading away reliable weapons. Tyreek Hill is clearly on the decline, Jaylen Waddle is a little overrated, and Smith was one of the few constants Miami could actually count on last year. As long as they kept feeding him the ball, it's not like his production was going to fall off a cliff. But it never seemed like the Dolphins were all that keen on keeping Smith long term. You see it in them barely acquiring any notable assets while trading him.
I'm not sure how this makes Miami better other than saving a paltry sum of money for a good tight end. It's not like the Dolphins have a solid replacement plan. Alas, now the Dolphins can move on. I guess.

Former Oklahoma Sooners linebacker makes NFL Top 100

Former Oklahoma Sooners outside linebacker Nik Bonitto enjoyed a breakout season in 2024 with the Denver Broncos. The former second-round pick made the Pro Bowl and was a second-team all-pro, both for the first time after the year, and another first came on Tuesday. Bonitto was named to the NFL's Top 100 players for 2025 list for the first time, checking in at No. 38. He shot into the rankings after a breakout season in 2024. Bonitto posted 13.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 2024, helping Denver return to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. He'd been a spot starter for his first two seasons with the Broncos, but is now a core member of one of the league's best defenses. Bonitto played for the Sooners from 2018 to 2021. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, he had 3.5 sacks, becoming a starter mid-season. He had the game-clinching interception of Baylor's Charlie Brewer in OU's historic come-from-behind victory in Waco. Bonitto earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and was a second-team All-American in 2020 after posting 7.5 sacks, and was second-team All-Big 12 and a third-team All-American in 2021 after finishing with seven sacks. He was a playmaker for the Alex Grinch defenses, one of a small handful of players who excelled on that side of the ball. The Broncos took Bonitto with the 64th overall selection of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he waited his turn in Denver before bursting onto the scene last year. Bonitto is the fifth former Sooner to make the list this summer. He joins Kansas City's Creed Humphrey, Houston's Joe Mixon, Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield and San Francisco's Trent Williams. De'Von Achane fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions

Rotoworld Staff, De'Von Achane 2025 Fantasy Preview 2024: It was a rollercoaster season for one of the summer's most hotly-debated fantasy picks. Achane managed to stay healthy after his injury-marred rookie year but watched his efficiency nosedive as he took the rock over 200 times on the ground. Far and away the league leader in average rush yards over expected in 2023, Achane found himself seventh from the bottom in 2024. Although prolific as a pass catcher (78 receptions), Achane did not tack on long runs. Just 31.5 percent of his ground production came on carries of 15-plus yards after that number was a league-leading 54.0 as a rookie. What's changed: All that being said, Achane still finished as the RB6 by average PPR points. No. 2 Raheem Mostert has been swapped out for second-year pro Jaylen Wright. The sophomore is a legitimate workload threat to Achane, but you could argue that's not even a bad thing. Achane could be the (extremely) rare back fantasy managers actually want to handle the ball less between the tackles so he can better maintain his efficiency and big-play potential. 2025 Outlook: Achane is a difficult back to project, but the Dolphins still desperately need his hands in the passing game. It is difficult to see how he falls out of the top 12, and easy to envision him sneaking into the top five with even modest efficiency gains or better long-gain luck.
