Ford inspires England to Argentina win on 100th cap

England fly-half George Ford celebrated his 100th Test appearance with with an influential display in Saturday's 35-12 win over Argentina in La Plata.
Ford, 32, kicked 15 points and assisted one of England's four tries as Steve Borthwick's side claimed victory before next Saturday's second and final Test of the series.

The hosts trailed 22-0 after 50 minutes before crossing twice in a disappointing performance after beating the British and Irish Lions in their last game.
Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi made seven changes from July 20's win over the Lions as No 8 Facundo Isa started the game in his first international appearance since October 2023.
England boss Borthwick was without 13 first-choice players away with the Lions, including captain Maro Itoje, as centre Seb Atkinson and winger Will Muir made their international debuts.
Ford ran out on his own in front of a packed crowd at a hostile Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi before kick-off as he became the eighth male player to reach the century of England Test appearances, having made his debut in 2014.

Contepomi's Pumas controlled an ill-disciplined opening quarter from England as flanker Alex Coles was shown a yellow card but they failed to make the most of their dominance.
Ford opened the scoring after 21 minutes with Coles off the field by slotting the seventh drop goal of his England career, three of them coming against Los Pumas in the 2023 Rugby World Cup pool stage.
Atkinson followed Coles to the bin but Ford's clinical effort was the only points of the first half.
Ford's influence on the encounter was illustrated even further as he played a crucial part to set-up full-back Freddie Steward with a vintage pass from the stand-off, sandwiched between two efforts from winger Tom Roebuck.

The hosts' attempted comeback was kicked off by flanker Pablo Matera crossing on his 110th cap after 52 minutes before lock Pedro Rubiolo also strolled over as they cut the deficit to 10 points.
Their hopes of victory were then dashed as Ford added two further penalties and winger Cadan Murley sneaked over in the final quarter as England won a third straight game over Argentina, a run which started with Ford's three drop goals two years ago.

Lolesio cleared of serious injury

Wallabies first choice fly-half Noah Lolesio has been cleared of any serious injury after being carted off in a medicab during Australia's 21-18 victory over Fiji. Lolesio left the field in a neck brace with twenty minutes to go after his head hit the ground during a tackle but was later discharged from hospital. The Wallabies confirmed he rejoined the team at their hotel with his symptoms improving. Advertisement The 25 year-old, who started in 11 of 13 Tests last year, would have been the favourite to start the series at ten. However, it's only been two months since Lolesio left the pitch in similar circumstances playing for the Brumbies. Western Force fly-half Ben Donaldson was the replacement against Fiji and Reds' Tom Lynagh - who has two caps to his name - also remains in contention to face the Lions for the Wallabies. Schmidt will name a revised squad on Friday to face the Lions.

India captain Gill hailed back home after 'brilliant' Test win

New captain Shubman Gill was hailed Monday for leading from the front after India recorded their maiden Test win at Edgbaston to level the series against England 1-1. Gill, who notched a century in a losing cause in the first Test at Headingley, hit new heights in scoring 269 and 161 to set up a crushing victory by 336 runs which leaves the five-match series finely poised. It was India's first win in nine Tests at the Birmingham venue, following seven previous defeats and one draw. "New captain, new India", The Indian Express newspaper splashed across its front page. Gill, 25, became the youngest Indian Test skipper to register an overseas win in just his second match in charge following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. he eclipsed Sunil Gavaskar, who was 26 when he led India to victory over New Zealand at Auckland in 1976. Gill came into the series with concerns over his batting average overseas, which had been less than 30, but he has shut down all the noise by stroking a remarkable 585 runs from four innings. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar called it a "Shublime innings from the man of the moment," offering his congratulations for "powering India to a brilliant Test victory." Tendulkar, writing on social media, added: "India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be one winner." - 'Drowning Street' - Fast bowler Akash Deep took a match haul of 10 wickets after replacing the rested Jasprit Bumrah as England were bowled out for 271 in their chase of 608 on day five. "What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled", Tendulkar said. Deep took 6-99 in the second innings, including bowling the world's top-ranked Test batsman Joe Root with a delivery that nipped away sharply and was called the "ball of the series" by Tendulkar. Batting great Virat Kohli, who also retired before the series, said: "Great victory for India at Edgbaston" and wrote that India had been "fearless and kept pushing England to the wall." "Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field... special mention to (Mohammed) Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled," he added. Former captain Sourav Ganguly praised Gill's performance and India's superior bowling attack, calling Akash and Siraj "workhorses". Indian newspapers had a field day with an outpouring of joyous puns. The Times of India said: "Deep's 10 send Eng to Drowning Street" and "Edg-bastian breached." The third Test of the five-match series begins on Thursday at Lord's. fk/pjm/dh

Youthful Chelsea ready for Thiago Silva reunion at Club World Cup

Former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is still going strong at the age of 40 and will lead out Fluminense against the Blues in Tuesday's Club World Cup semi-final (Paul ELLIS) Chelsea's young side are targeting a place in the final of the Club World Cup when they take on Fluminense in the last four on Tuesday, with the Brazilian team marshalled by former Blues defender Thiago Silva who is still going strong at the age of 40. Silva was already a veteran when he signed for Chelsea in 2020 before going on to have an impressive four-year stint at Stamford Bridge. Advertisement One of the finest centre-backs of his generation, Silva arrived after eight years at Paris Saint-Germain and in his first season at Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League. He played 155 games for the London club and left 12 months ago after helping oversee the development of some of the young talents now featuring regularly under Enzo Maresca. "He's a legend of football, a top player," Marc Cucurella, a teammate of Silva's for two years, told English media, adding that the two had exchanged messages about their impending reunion. "We have the opportunity to play against him again and hopefully we can do good things, win this game and play in the final." Advertisement Silva initially made his name at Fluminense, featuring in the team that reached the Copa Libertadores final in 2008 before losing to LDU Quito of Ecuador. He returned there upon leaving Chelsea, once again pulling on the green, red and white of the Rio de Janeiro outfit who won the Copa Libertadores in 2023. The evergreen Brazil international was then reunited earlier this year with Renato Gaucho, the coach in 2008 who is now in his sixth spell in charge. An impressive run at the Club World Cup has seen Fluminense hold Borussia Dortmund in the group stage, eliminate Inter Milan in the last 16 and get the better of Saudi powerhouse Al Hilal in the quarter-finals. Advertisement "If you had asked me beforehand if we would have got this far I would have said we were a long way away from doing so," Silva told broadcaster DAZN after the victory over Al Hilal. "We know the financial size of these teams, the difference is enormous, absurd. But often our collective, the family atmosphere that we have, gives us strength that you maybe don't think you have." - Brazilian opposition again - It is not just Silva raising the average age at Fluminense. There is also 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio, wing-back Samuel Xavier at 35 and 37-year-old Argentine forward German Cano. Advertisement But the man giving them the X-factor is 27-year-old Colombian winger Jhon Arias, unquestionably one of the players of the tournament. "I have watched some games that they have played and you can see that they are very well organised. They have some very good players. The manager is doing a fantastic job," Maresca said as he prepares to face Brazilian opposition for the third time at the tournament. They lost to Flamengo in the group stage but beat Palmeiras in the quarter-finals in Philadelphia. "The energy from Brazilian teams in this competition has been high -- probably the reason why is because they are at the start of their season while we are finished the season," Maresca added. Advertisement Chelsea now get their first taste of the MetLife Stadium, the hulking 82,500-capacity venue in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City. Many of Maresca's players may not have been sure what to make of FIFA's new tournament which came at the end of a campaign in which they finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League. But suddenly they stand one game from the final, in which they would face either Real Madrid or PSG. With Silva gone, Maresca has been working with a young squad at Chelsea, and the average age of his starting line-up against Palmeiras last Friday was just 24. Advertisement There are more young players coming in too, with 23-year-old Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, formerly of Fluminense, making his debut in the quarter-finals. Brazil prodigy Estevao Willian, 18, will join from Palmeiras ahead of next season and 20-year-old winger Jamie Gittens has just signed from Borussia Dortmund. Moises Caicedo, the midfield linchpin who is still only 23, will return to the midfield against Fluminense after suspension. as/dh
