How to improve liver health? Gastroenterologist recommends 12 juices and foods to fight inflammation

Hindustan Times3 days ago
Liver is one of the most important organs in the body. It plays a major role in digestion, metabolism, detoxification, and storing essential nutrients. It also helps make cholesterol and special proteins that carry fats through the blood. Even though the liver does so much, we often ignore liver health because it usually does not show warning signs until there is already some damage. However, you don't need to do anything extreme to keep your liver healthy. With a few simple dietary changes, you can support its daily function. A gastroenterologist shares some top foods and juices that may help reduce inflammation and improve liver health naturally. These foods and juices can keep the liver healthy.(Adobe Stock)
Foods and juices for liver health
Here are 12 foods and juices that a liver specialist suggests to support your liver health:
1. Beetroot juice
"Beetroot juice is rich in betalains, powerful antioxidants that help reduce inflammation. These compounds also support the liver's natural detox process by promoting the elimination of toxins," explains Dr Saiprasad Girish Lad, consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Wockhardt Hospitals. You can have a glass of beetroot juice to kickstart your liver health.
2. Carrot juice
Carrot juice is full of beta-carotene and antioxidants, which help protect liver cells from damage. "These nutrients may also enhance bile secretion and support better digestion," says Dr Girish. It can also help reduce the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
3. Lemon juice
A small amount of lemon water, especially when consumed in the morning, can stimulate bile production. Bile helps the liver break down fats more easily and aids digestion. Lemon also contains vitamin C, which further helps cleanse the liver.
4. Amla juice
Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is packed with vitamin C and antioxidants. Amla juice may help protect the liver from oxidative stress and support its overall health. Its anti-inflammatory properties also make it a good addition to a liver-friendly diet.
5. Pomegranate juice
Pomegranate is known for its high antioxidant content, especially polyphenols. According to research published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, regular intake of pomegranate juice can improve liver enzyme levels, particularly in people with obesity or metabolic disorders. These individuals are more prone to liver issues, so including pomegranate juice in their diet may offer long-term benefits.
6. Green leafy vegetables
Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and fenugreek leaves are loaded with chlorophyll. 'This green pigment acts as a natural detoxifier by binding to toxins and flushing them out of the body,' shares Dr Girish. These greens are easy to add to soups, smoothies, or stir-fries.
7. Cruciferous vegetables
Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are cruciferous vegetables that are packed with compounds that activate liver enzymes. These enzymes help the body process and remove toxins more efficiently. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition even suggests that broccoli can reduce the risk of developing fatty liver disease.
8. Walnuts
'Walnuts are rich in healthy fats and amino acids like arginine, which help the liver get rid of waste and toxins,' according to Dr Girish. Their omega-3 content also has anti-inflammatory benefits. You can enjoy a small handful of walnuts as a snack to support both brain and liver health.
9. Fatty fish
Fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats help reduce liver inflammation and prevent fat buildup. A 2016 review in Gastroenterology Research and Practice found that omega-3s significantly reduced liver fat and triglyceride levels in people with liver conditions.
10. Berries
Blueberries and cranberries are full of antioxidants called anthocyanins, which give them their vibrant colour. A 2021 study in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies showed that cranberry extract improved fatty liver conditions in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
11. Chia and basil seeds
These tiny seeds swell up in water and are loaded with fibre and omega-3s. They support digestion and reduce inflammation, making them great for overall liver function.
12. Bananas
Bananas are easy on the stomach and a good source of potassium, which helps regulate fluid balance and may aid in flushing out toxins from the body. They are also a gentle option for those with sensitive digestion.

Family of brain-dead youth donates organs, saves 3 lives

1 2 Chandigarh: The PGI witnessed another inspiring moment as the family of a young engineering student turned personal tragedy into hope for others by donating his vital organs. Navneet Singh, 23, a resident of Gangath village, Nurpur, Kangra, suffered a severe head injury after accidentally falling from a rooftop on July 3. Despite receiving intensive medical care at PGI, he was declared brain dead on July 11. Amidst their grief, Navneet's father, Janak Singh, made the courageous decision to donate his son's organs. "Deciding to donate my son's organs was the hardest choice we have ever faced. But knowing that his organs would give others a chance to live has brought us some comfort in our sorrow. We are proud that Navneet's legacy will continue through these lives," he said. Following the family's consent, PGI's transplant teams retrieved Navneet's heart, kidneys, and pancreas. The kidneys and pancreas were transplanted into two critically ill patients at PGI, while the heart was allocated to a matching recipient at RML Hospital, New Delhi, through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), as no suitable recipient was available at PGI. To ensure timely transport of the donor heart, a dedicated green corridor was created from PGI to Chandigarh International Airport, Mohali, and onward to New Delhi. The heart was successfully transplanted into a 26-year-old patient admitted at RML Hospital. At PGI, the department of renal transplant surgery, led by Prof Ashish Sharma, performed a simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant on one recipient. This marked PGI's 63rd pancreas transplant — the highest number of such procedures performed by any institution across Indian states and union territories — curing the patient of Type I diabetes. The second kidney was transplanted into another patient suffering from end-stage renal failure and undergoing long-term dialysis.

Air quality in Mumbai's Deonar and Sion worse than coastal cities of Chennai and Kolkata in Jan-June 2025, finds national study on air pollution

Mumbai: In the first six months of 2025, Mumbai, as a whole, reported average toxic PM2.5 levels in the air below the national standard, but several of its areas, including Deonar, Sion, Kandivli East, and Bandra-Kurla Complex, saw higher pollution compared to other coastal cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Vijayawada, and Puducherry. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This highlights the need for strict enforcement of hotspot-based measures to effectively reduce PM2.5 concentrations, stated a latest national report on air pollution, which draws on data from Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) in 239 cities. The PM2.5 particles in air are considered carcinogenic and can be absorbed in blood upon breathing. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) has released its half-yearly analysis of air quality across India for January to June 2025, revealing a persistent and widespread challenge in meeting both national and international air quality standards. Deonar stands out as one of the most polluted monitoring sites among all the listed coastal locations, with other Mumbai areas, such as Sion, Kandivli East, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Borivli East, Worli, Mazgaon, Shivaji Nagar, Sewri, and Kurla, also registering PM2.5 levels above or equal to NAAQS (national ambient air quality standards) which is 40 μg/m³ (micrograms per cubic metre). "These figures place Mumbai's air quality in a more concerning bracket, especially when compared to many sites in Chennai and Puducherry, where the PM2.5 concentrations are generally lower," the study stated. According to the report, the compliance assessment shows that PM2.5 data was available for over 80% of days in 239 cities with CAAQMS. Among these, 122 cities exceeded India's annual National Ambient NAAQS of 40 μg/m3, while 117 cities remained below this threshold. However, all 239 cities surpassed the much stricter World Health Organization's (WHO) annual standard of 5 μg/m3. This widespread exceedance indicates that air pollution continues to pose a significant public health risk even in cities that are technically 'compliant' with Indian standards, the report stated further. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "While Kolkata also has several locations with high PM2.5 concentrations, Mumbai's pollution levels are notable for their consistency across multiple sites. In contrast, Chennai's monitoring stations, particularly those in residential and peripheral areas, often report much cleaner air. Puducherry and Vijayawada show even lower PM2.5 averages, indicating better air quality. This comparison highlights that Mumbai, despite its coastal location, faces significant air pollution challenges, making it one of the more polluted coastal cities in India during the first half of the year," said CREA's analyst and researcher Manoj Kumar. "Addressing the air quality crisis in any Indian city requires a multi-sectoral approach. Fragmented or seasonal measures are not enough. Urgent steps are needed to update national standards, expand NCAP coverage to gaseous pollutants, and enforce mitigation measures for all polluting sources to safeguard public health throughout the year," added Kumar
