Israel fires back at Germany over arms embargo
Israel on Friday fired back at Germany over its decision to pause the shipment of arms for use in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and directly 'expressed his disappointment.' 'Instead of supporting Israel's just war against Hamas, which carried out the most horrific attack against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, Germany is rewarding Hamas terrorism by embargoing arms to Israel,' the official prime minister of Israel's account wrote in a post on X. 'Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel's goal is not to take over Gaza, but to free Gaza from Hamas and enable a peaceful government to be established there,' the statement added. Amid reports of starvation and Israel's decision to ramp up its operations in Gaza, Merz said it was time for the government to take a stand. 'From the German government's point of view, the even tougher military action of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip, which was decided by the Israeli security cabinet last night, makes it increasingly difficult to see how these goals are to be achieved,' the German leader said in a Friday statement. 'Under these circumstances, the German government is not approving any exports of armaments that can be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice.' Merz maintained that Israel has a right to defend itself against Hamas, while adding that determined negotiations on a ceasefire are Germany's 'top priority.' 'The German Government remains deeply concerned about the continuing suffering of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip,' Merz said. 'With the planned offensive, the Israeli government bears even greater responsibility than before for their supply. It must provide comprehensive access for aid deliveries, including for UN organisations and other non-governmental institutions,' he added. In late July, Israeli leaders said they would resume air drops for aid but denied reports of a humanitarian crisis as alleged by advocacy groups and journalists on the ground. In response, France, Canada and the United Kingdom have said they will recognized Palestine as a sovereign state.

GHF head meets UN aid orgs. for first time as UN's Albanese asks for GHF dismantlement
This first reported meeting between Moore and the UN aid organizations comes after a group of UN experts called for the dismantlement of the foundation. Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) head Rev. Johnnie Moore met with leaders of UN aid organizations on Wednesday, according to a Thursday report by Axios, citing a US official and two other sources with direct knowledge of the matter. This is the first reported meeting between Moore and the UN aid organizations since GHF began its humanitarian aid operations in the Gaza Strip, and it comes after a group of UN experts called for the dismantlement of the foundation. The statement, led by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, 'expressed concerns over the GHF's operations,' and said that 'Palestinians are paying the ultimate price of the international community's legal, political and moral failure.' 'The GHF, a non-governmental organisation created by Israel in February 2025, with US support, to allegedly distribute aid in Gaza, is an utterly disturbing example of how humanitarian relief can be exploited for covert military and geopolitical agendas in serious breach of international law,' said the statement. 'The entanglement of Israeli intelligence, US contractors, and ambiguous non-governmental entities underlines the urgent need for robust international oversight and action under UN auspices.' Albanese sanctioned by the US over 'political, economic warfare' against Israel These statements come as Albanese faces sanctions by the US because of her stance over Israel, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticizing her efforts to have the International Criminal Court take action against US and Israeli officials, companies, and executives. 'Albanese's campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel will no longer be tolerated,' Rubio said Wednesday in a post on X/Twitter. 'We will always stand by our partners in their right to self-defense,' he wrote. 'The United States will continue to take whatever actions we deem necessary to respond to lawfare and protect our sovereignty and that of our allies.' Solve the daily Crossword

Top 10 African countries with the fewest number of experts on UN missions mid-2025
UN Experts on Mission (EOM) in African countries in 2025 are as important as they have ever been, as world peace and development issues become more complicated. Business Insider Africa presents the top 10 African countries with the fewest number of experts on UN missions in mid-2025. This list is courtesy of data from the UN. Several African countries that are on US missions have no experts. In unstable and conflict-affected states, these professionals, civilians, law enforcement, and military personnel are sent to help with issues including governance, human rights, security sector reform, and election procedures. Some African countries continue to be conspicuously absent or very modestly active in these missions, despite the fact that many have raised their contributions. The low participation rate is a lost opportunity for these nations on a number of levels, including diplomatic, economic, professional, and strategic. Participation in UN expert missions demonstrates national competence and global citizenship. Countries that remain absent are more likely to be perceived as beneficiaries of international help rather than contributors to global solutions. African states with limited experience in peace operations or UN expert participation are frequently ill-equipped to make a significant contribution when violence breaks out in adjacent countries. This can limit their capacity to lead or influence peace and security frameworks on the continent and weaken their influence in regional blocs like ECOWAS, IGAD, or SADC. In a nutshell, these nations forfeit a vital opportunity to demonstrate their presence and viewpoints on the international scene by refusing to participate in UN expert missions. African countries without a voice at this level are marginalized in issues that directly or indirectly impact their interests, particularly in regional peace and security, as expert missions are frequently the foundation of UN decision -making and operational success. With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the largest number of experts on UN missions as shown by UN data. Rank Country Number of UN experts 1. Angola 0 2. Botswana 0 3. Djibouti 0 4. Madagascar 0 5. Mali 0 6. Niger 1 7. Algeria 2 8. Congo 2 9. Côte d'Ivoire 2 10. Burkina Faso 3
