Airlines in Middle East to test GPS alternatives as 'jamming' risk hits navigation

Airlines and governments in the Middle East have been invited to take part in the ongoing testing of a new navigation technology that some experts say is significantly more reliable than Global Positioning Satellite systems.
SandboxAQ, a developer of products involving quantum technology and artificial intelligence, recently heralded the 'commercially available prototype' of the technology they're calling AQNav.
This comes as GPS, the standard navigation system around the world, has become a victim of its own success, and is increasingly vulnerable to GPS jamming which can renders the navigation assistance unusable.
GPS jamming − also known as GPS spoofing − became a prominent problem in June during the air war between Israel and Iran.
Smartphone users across the Middle East reported anomalies with their GPS locations, which were wildly inaccurate.
GPS has gained immense popularity thanks to the ease it can be incorporated into technology. But this ubiquity is becoming a growing vulnerability.
SandboxAQ recently announced that Acubed, an Airbus company, completed what they're describing as 'rigorous real-world testing' of the touted GPS alternative, AQNav, which uses the magnetic field of the Earth along with quantum sensors that pick up the magnetic signals with the help of special AI software.
Tests lasted five months and involved more than 100 flights that took place across 'diverse geographies and conditions'.
According to SandboxAQ and Acubed, the test results show that AQNav 'consistently beat' the US Federal Aviation Administration's en route navigation standards.
'Pilots need to be able to trust their navigation systems,' Luca Ferrara, general manager for SandboxAQ's navigation business unit, told The National.
'When they can trust it, they're less stressed, they have less of a cognitive workload and they don't have worry about dealing with GPS loss,' he explained.
SandboxAQ says that AQNav is rooted in and inspired by nature, and utilises the Earth's magnetic field, similar to how birds and other animals use it to navigate.
That approach, combined with Sandbox AQ's proprietary AI software and use of hardware, gives it significantly more resilience and reliability compared to GPS, Mr Ferrara said.
SandboxAQ also points out that unlike GPS, it doesn't connect to the internet, cloud or satellites.
In the recent tests from Acubed, AQNav logged more than 44,000km, 'surpassing the Earth's circumference, without relying on GPS'.
Mr Ferrara said more testing will now take place with hopes of eventually readying the system to be used on commercial airlines.
SandboxAQ hopes to gain more insight into how to best position the magnetic censors used by the system on various aircraft, along with other details.
Testing will help establish whether users would transfer navigation data to an existing computer on the plane, or a separate computer not connected to the internet or any network on board. This system is known as air-gapping, which is broadly viewed as more secure.
'Do we want it to pipe the data into the flight management computer or do we want it to go in an air-gapped way?' asked Mr Ferrara.
He said Sandbox AQ currently has contracts with the US Air Force, and he expects the new navigation technology to first be adopted by defence and national security agencies, and then commercial entities.
Through more testing, followed by a 'constructive dialogue' with aviation regulators around the world, Mr Ferrara said there's hope that commercial airlines will also be able to implement the system.
Given the Middle East's increasingly strong presence in commercial aviation, with countries like the UAE playing a crucial role with international travel, it makes sense to push for testing among the region's airlines.
'We're looking for forward-leaning partners in the aerospace sector within the Gulf region to collaborate with,' Mr Ferrara said.
He said the company is in discussions with several companies, and hopes to continue with those efforts given the Middle East's tourism footprint and globally recognised airline brands.

In the epic 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, there's a line from Omar Sharif's character, Sherif Ali, that inadvertently illustrates the current conundrum posed by AI data centres. 'The well is everything,' Sherif Ali tells T E Lawrence, pointing to a well – a subtle motif that recurs throughout the film emphasising how scarce and coveted water supplies are in the desert. Fast forward to 2025, and although water is more readily available throughout the region, supplies are still vulnerable. According to the World Bank, of the 17 most water-stressed countries in the world, 11 are in the Middle East and North Africa, making it one of the worst-affected regions. At the same time, the region is in the middle of an economic renaissance made possible through artificial intelligence. Along with the promise of AI, however, comes the need for huge data centres capable of handling all the commands from users around the world. The data centres, consisting of incredibly powerful servers with thousands of central processing units and graphics processing units, need to stay cool somehow. This cannot be achieved by the small fans we've grown accustomed to in our laptops and desktop PCs. Many of the newest data centres have elaborate air conditioning systems and geothermal cooling set-ups, but they also often rely on liquid-based cooling methods – and that's where water comes in. According to Alphabet-owned Google's 2024 environmental impact report, the company's data centres 6.1 billion gallons of water, a 17 per cent increase compared to 2022. While not all data centres are the same, experts tell The National that cooling methods pose a challenge in terms of equitably maintaining supplies. 'The Gulf's data‑centre boom is running head‑on into the laws of physics,' said Mohammed Soliman, director of the strategic technology programme at the Washington-based Middle East Institute think tank. 'AI workloads generate far more heat than traditional cloud operations, and in a region where summer air can hit 50°C, cooling at scale is the gating factor on how big you can build up at scale to capture a significant percentage of the global compute map outside of the US and China.' Unlike the US and Europe, the Middle East cannot count on ample supplies of cold water for heat exchange, he added. That simple factor means companies operating data centres in the Middle East will have to use what is known as two-phase immersion cooling systems. These systems can help recycle and save water, though it can be expensive and they are far from perfect. Mr Soliman said newer data centres planned for throughout the Middle East might also be able to be paired with existing desalination plants, so the heat generated by the centres can be 'put to work' rather than wasted. He added that while the warmer climate in the region poses an initial problem, technology is quickly evolving, and once the cooling and water conservation methods are perfected for data centres, the Middle East will ultimately benefit. 'If you crack the cooling challenge in the Gulf … you unlock the one missing piece in an otherwise world‑class AI ecosystem,' he said. 'It would give the Gulf the ability to compete head‑to‑head with the natural climate advantages of Scandinavia and Canada.' Innovations could lead to the Middle East being the most optimal place to 'bring chips online', Mr Soliman added. Even in climates deemed more ideal for data centres, problems persist when it comes to keeping them cool. In late March, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said so many people around the world were using a new feature in the company's ChatGPT offering that the company's own servers began to encounter problems. 'Our GPUs are melting,' he posted on X. OpenAI temporarily put limits on how many people could use the new feature, he added. Meanwhile, as data centre construction has boomed over the past decade, the cooling technology making it all possible has blossomed. According to Markets and Markets' research, as of 2025, the cooling sector was worth about $11 billion, and if current trends continue, it is set to reach $24 billion by 2032. With environmental stewardship remaining paramount in many countries, companies in the technology sector seem keenly aware of the need to improve the efficiency of data centres, along with the need to cut down on the water many of them use. Thar Casey, chief executive of AmberSemi, a company that has 'pioneering and patented' digital power management technology, said increasing efficiency was key to maintaining the cool temperatures necessary inside data centres. 'If we're cutting the losses inside the centres through efficiency, are we going to need that much cooling? The answer would be no,' he said. Mr Casey – who recently attended the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit along with Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Mubadala's managing director and chief executive, and chairman of the UAE Executive Affairs Authority – said Gulf countries are showing tremendous interest in increasing the efficiency of data centres. He added that the UAE, which recently announced plans for 5GW UAE-US AI Campus, is showing a particular affinity for lessening the environmental footprint of data centres while maximising the newest cooling technology. 'It's extremely important to them and my message to these countries is that there is a way to solve the energy challenge inside the data centre,' he said, referring to AmberSemi's conversion lines and switch controllers used by semiconductor companies and makers of electrical products. Even the smallest increases of efficiency, Mr Casey said, could lead to significant electricity consumption, as well a major reduction in potential water used for liquid cooling methods of CPUs and GPUs. With the Middle East rapidly stepping up its AI ambitions, coupled with the region's affinity for improving water security, those data centre efficiencies could prove to be long-term game-changers.

UAE tech funding surges to $1 billion in H1 2025, outpacing Japan and Sweden

The UAE outpaced mature ecosystems like Japan and Sweden in total tech funding as it received $1 billion investment during the first half of 2025, boosted by $100 million plus deals and sectoral strength, latest data shows. Tracxn Technologies, a data intelligence platform for private market research, said the funding landscape continues to be driven by late-stage investments and strong performances across sectors such as enterprise applications, fintech, and retail. "A total of $1 billion was raised during the January-June 2025, marking an increase of 133% compared to $438 million raised in second half of 2024. However, this also reflects a drop of 43% compared to $1.8 billion raised in first half of 2024," according to the report. The significant half-yearly recovery places the UAE among the most active tech ecosystems in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region during the first half of 2025. Late-stage funding The report noted that seed stage saw a total funding of $32.7 million in January-June 2025, representing a drop of 74% compared to $125 million raised in July-December 2024, and a drop of 71% compared to $111 million raised in first half of 2024. "Early-stage funding amounted to $167 million in first half of 2025, reflecting a drop of 13% compared to $193 million raised in second half of 2024, and an increase of 4% compared to $160 million raised in first half of 2024," according to the report. Late stage witnessed a total funding of $817 million in first half of 2025, which is an increase of 583% compared to $120 million raised in second half of 2024, and a drop of 46% compared to $1.5 billion raised in first half of 2024. The enterprise applications sector saw a total funding of $728 million in first half of 2025, which is an increase of 543% when compared to $113 million raised in second half of 2024 and a drop of 56% when compared to $1.7 billion raised in first half of 2024. The fintech sector recorded a total funding of $286 million in January-June 2025, reflecting an increase of 47% compared to $195 million raised in July-December 2024 and an increase of 276% compared to $76.2 million raised in first half of 2024. The retail sector saw a total funding of $172 million in first half of 2025, representing an increase of 20% compared to $144 million raised in second half of 2024 and a rise of 275% compared to $46 million raised in first half of 2024. Mega Deals, No Unicorn Tracxn Technologies recorded that first half of 2025 witnessed two $100 million plus funding rounds, compared to one such round in second half of 2024 and first half of 2024. Companies like Vista Global and Tabby managed to raise funds above $100 million in this period. Vista Global raised a total of $600 million in a private equity round, while Tabby secured $160 million in a Series E round. "A major part of these $100 million plus funding rounds came from enterprise applications, retail, and fintech. Micropolis was the only company that went public in first half of 2025," according to the report. The report noticed that no unicorn was created in first half of 2025, second half of 2024, and first half of 2024. Tech companies in the UAE saw nine acquisitions in first half of 2025, which is a 10% decrease as compared to 10 acquisitions in both second half of 2024 and first half of 2024. Among the notable acquisitions in first half of 2025, Everdome was acquired by Hokoworld, Gulf Craft was acquired by Saronic, and Property Monitor was acquired by Dubizzle Group. Dubai-based tech firms accounted for 93% of all funding seen by tech companies across the UAE. This was followed by Abu Dhabi at a distant second in terms of funding concentration. 500 Global, Wamda Capital, and Middle East Venture Partners were the overall top investors in the UAE tech ecosystem. Oraseya Capital, Plus VC, and Endeavor were the top seed stage investors in the UAE tech ecosystem for first half of 2025. e&, Flourish, and MoreThan Capital Advisors were the top early stage investors in the UAE tech ecosystem for first half of 2025 while STV emerged as the top late-stage investor. The report said UAE tech ecosystem witnessed a significant recovery in first half of 2025, driven by a surge in late-stage funding and strong performances across enterprise applications, fintech, and retail sectors. While seed-stage investments contracted sharply, the presence of multiple $100 million plus deals helped maintain momentum. With Dubai continuing to dominate funding activity and a steady flow of acquisitions, the region remains a key player in the global tech investment landscape. Appetite for Late-stage Investment In another report, Magnitt — the leading data and intelligence platform tracking venture capital and private equity across Emerging Venture Markets (EVMs), said mega deal investments, those greater than $100 million plus, are an indicator of appetite for later-stage investment. It noticed that first half of 2025 saw two mega deals in Mena, Ninja's $250 million and Tabby's $160 million round, which accounted for 27% of total capital deployed, up from 16% in first half of 2024. "This reflects a promising return of investor appetite for late-stage activity, especially in the GCC region. Notably, the share of Series A and B rounds exceeding $20 million jumped to 42%, up from only 10% a year ago. The numbers suggest a growing preference for backing companies with proven traction and scalability, as investors double down on ventures that have moved beyond the idea stage and are ready to accelerate." Philip Bahoshy, CEO of Magnitt, noted that first-half data shows strong resilience in Mena's venture ecosystem, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. "While macro uncertainties persist, investor appetite remains robust, evidenced by back to back mega deals and unprecedented mergers and acquisitions activity,' he said. Saudis, UAE Remain the Powerhouses Despite the onset of Ramadan and Eid, second quartet had notable events and conferences like Dubai AI Week, and the Dubai FinTech Summit, along with the US and Saudi Forum in Riyadh, attended by President Donald Trump. These attracted international investors to the region along with regional dialogue to bolster venture, private equity, and capital investment across the GCC. "This activity was also reflected in deal flow announcements with Saudi Arabia seeing more investment capital than any country in the region for the third straight H1, raising $860 million (+116% YoY) from 114 transactions (+31% YoY), in part attributed to the return of Mega rounds including by Ninja ($250 million) and Tabby ($160 million)," according to Magnitt report. The report also pointed out that fintech funding in Mena tripled to $596 million, representing 39% of total capital in first half of 2025. Even excluding mega rounds, the sector led both by funding and deal count. With non-mega fintech funding up 122%, and 30% of all Mena deals falling within the sector, it remains the cornerstone of regional innovation and an investor favourite because of its scalability. "Startups focused on payments and lending dominated the activity, and a record 34% of fintech deals exceeded $5 million in size. AI is also showing significant growth across industries in the Mena region. In May, we released our inaugural report to map how funding has evolved between 2022 and 2024. The report shows $660 million raised from 322 deals in Mena, with the UAE leading deal activity," according to the report.
