Chennai customs busted drug smuggling route, Sri Lanka as transit point for high-potency ganja; 2 held
CHENNAI: Customs sleuths at Chennai airport have uncovered a new modus operandi used by drug smugglers, using Sri Lanka as a transit point to bring high-potency ganja into India from Thailand.
Two couriers have been arrested in recent weeks as part of the ongoing crackdown.
In the latest case, a male passenger who flew in from Bangkok via Colombo was intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) on Tuesday. Upon checking his baggage, officials found six transparent food packets emitting a strong odour. These packets contained green flowering and fruiting tops of marijuana weighing 2.8 kg.
Field drug tests confirmed the contents as marijuana.
The substance was seized under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. During questioning, the passenger admitted he was promised Rs 1.2 lakh to deliver the contraband in Bengaluru, planning to travel there by road. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
Customs officials linked the incident to an earlier seizure on 16 May, in which six kilograms of hydroponic ganja were smuggled from Thailand via Colombo.

The contraband had been packed inside 13 sealed snack packets labelled as 'Ritz toasted chips' and 'multigrain tortilla chips'.
Authorities believe smugglers are using Sri Lanka to bypass strict checks usually applied to flyers arriving directly from Bangkok at Chennai airport. In 2024 so far, around 45 kg of hydroponic ganja smuggled from Thailand has been seized at the airport. Investigations indicate that the final delivery point in both recent cases was Bengaluru, not Chennai.
Officials are examining whether the same network is involved in both operations.
In a separate case, the Chennai Customs Postal Appraising Department (PAD) intercepted a parcel earlier this month. After suspicious results from X-ray scanning, 1.022 kg of hydroponic ganja was found hidden in two packets. This consignment was also seized under the NDPS Act, and investigations are ongoing to identify the recipient.

CBI arrests EPFO officer in Odisha for accepting Rs 10,000 bribe to approve employer's application
ANI 14 Jun 2025, 20:35 GMT+10 Ganjam (Odisha) [India], June 14 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended the accused Senior Social Security Assistant (SSSA), EPFO Regional Office, Berhampur, District Ganjam, Odisha, while accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,000/- from the complainant, said the agency. CBI registered a case against the accused on June 12 based on a complaint dated the same date. It was alleged that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000/ from the complainant to approve the Authorised Signatory Application of the Employer, i.e., a private company, on the EPFO Portal. After negotiation, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 10,000/--from the complainant. CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed. Investigation is continuing, said the CBI. (ANI)

CBI arrests two accused for allegedly deceiving NEET aspirants
New Delhi [India], June 14 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two accused private individuals for allegedly deceiving aspiring NEET candidates by falsely promising to manipulate their NEET UG 2025 scores in exchange for monetary consideration, as per the official press release by Central Bureau of Investigation. A case was registered on June 9 against the accused private individual and unknown others on allegations that the two accused residents of Solapur and Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were involved in defrauding NEET candidates and their parents by falsely claiming to have connections with fictitious officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA). They assured victims that they could manipulate the marks of low-scoring candidates in NEET UG 2025 in return for hefty payments. It was also learnt that the accused was meeting gullible parents at Hotel ITC Grand Central, Parel, Mumbai. During Investigation it was revealed that accused was found demanding Rs. 90 lakh per candidate, later he negotiated to accept Rs. 87.5 lakh per candidate. He falsely claimed that he could influence NTA officials and manipulate NEET UG 2025 scores. Additionally, he assured candidates that they would receive details of their purportedly increased marks six hours before the official declaration of results. The investigation has also revealed that the accused was in contact with the co-accused, who operates an admission consultancy firm in Navi Mumbai, and another individual, who runs a similar consultancy in Pune. A forensic examination of the mobile phones of the arrested individuals uncovered incriminating chats containing details of prospective candidates, their roll numbers, admit cards, OMR sheets, and evidence of financial transactions through Hawala networks. During the investigation, the accused was arrested in Mumbai on 09.06.2025 whereas the co-accused was arrested in Sangli District, Maharashtra on 10.06.2025. Both were produced before the Special CBI Court, Mumbai, which initially granted Police Custody Remand (PCR) until June 13, later extended until June 16. The investigation has not found any involvement of government officials or NTA personnel with the accused persons in the case. The accused misled parents by falsely claiming connections with NTA officials. Further investigation is going on. (ANI)

Aimed at sensitising teachers about child safety, SCERT relaunches POCSO training for all Delhi schools
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has relaunched its online training programme on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, making it available to every teacher in government and private schools across Delhi. Hosted on the Centre's DIKSHA-LEAD (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) portal, the 'Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment), Act, 2019' course has been made open for enrolment and completion till June 30. 'This training is an important initiative aimed at sensitising all educators and stakeholders about child safety and legal responsibilities under the POCSO Act,' stated an SCERT circular issued this week. The course is designed to cover every critical aspect of the law, including the latest amendments, obligations for mandatory reporting, and detailed guidance on recognising and responding to potential offences, it added. The program was first introduced last October and was made open for students and faculty members of SCERT and District Institute of Education & Training (DIET), among others. Teachers who have not yet taken or completed the course earlier 'are provided another opportunity to enroll, complete, and obtain certification,' stated the circular. The department has issued detailed step-by-step instructions for enrolment. To participate, educators should first install or update the DIKSHA mobile app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store or visit the DIKSHA website on their computer. After selecting their preferred language, users must choose the role 'Teacher/Student,' set the board to 'State – Delhi,' and specify their medium and class. Once the profile setup is complete, teachers can access the course directly via a provided link or by scanning the QR code. They then click 'Join Course' and log in using an existing email or mobile-number account, Google credentials, or by registering anew with OTP verification. Successful participants are to receive a course completion certificate upon scoring at least 60%. 'Course completion certificates will be generated 15 days after the date of completing the course,' ensuring sufficient time for verification. Certificates will reflect the name appearing on the teacher's DIKSHA profile at the time of completion, the circular noted. Educators are encouraged to finish the training 'without disturbing their school/Institute routine work' and at their own pace, from any location. SCERT has called on all Heads of Schools and district coordinators to promote broad participation.
