Darts star who struggled at World Matchplay shows true colours with Luke Littler admission

John Henderson only won one match at the World Matchplay in his career, but the Scotsman has hailed the event as one of his favourite PDC tournaments and heaped praise on Luke Littler
John Henderson has praised the World Matchplay as one of his top PDC tournaments, though he conceded that the event's iconic venue could have benefited from improved air con.

The World Cup-winning Scot appeared on the Winter Gardens stage five times from 2011 to 2019, and despite only securing a single victory against 2005 champion Colin Lloyd, he regards the tournament as 'fantastic.' Current world champion Luke Littler is set to compete in Blackpool with high expectations of adding to his impressive list of achievements.

Despite a disappointing first-round exit in his Matchplay debut, Aberdeen's Henderson believes Littler will enter the fray with a fearless attitude.

"I always found the Matchplay... I think Winter Gardens was probably one of the best venues, but I struggled because of the heat," Henderson, who is regularly seen competing in the MODUS Super Series broadcast live on Pluto TV, told the Express.
"I mean, Blackpool in the middle of July, and the Winter Gardens was, it was like an oven and absolutely roasting. I've lost a lot of weight since the last time, so I might have handled it better now, but then I used to sweat a lot and struggled with the heat.
"The tournament itself was fantastic, it really was. My record's not great. I think I only won one game there against Lloydy. I always mention it when the Matchplay comes around.

"But no, even though I only won once, it was one of my favourite tournaments. It was great, the crowd were magic, they were so close to the stage, everybody's out there. There are a lot of folk on holiday, plus there were a lot of Scots who used to come down to support the boys, so it was good.

"Luke will go up there with no fear like he normally does. Just another game of darts, and that's the way he looks at it, another game of darts. His attitude's fantastic, he's got a great attitude towards the game."
When questioned about the influence The Nuke has had on darts since bursting onto the scene, Henderson was eager to praise the teenager and admitted he's relieved his own time amongst the PDC elite is nearly finished.
"There's only one word to describe him - he's just a beast," Henderson continued. "He's just phenomenal. Obviously, [a player like] Luke is only coming along every so often, but it really has progressed as the younger generation coming through, I think everybody's buying dartboards now, there's academies up and down the country now.

"Luke has certainly put his mark on the sport, there's no question about that. I don't know how much practice he does at home, but he doesn't seem to practice too much when he gets to the venue, and he goes and does what he does on a stage. He's obviously been born with a talent, and it's amazing what he's done, and he has made the sport even bigger.
"Phil [Taylor] took it to a level I thought darts could never go to, and then obviously, Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright have come on, brought it to another level.
"I think Luke's actually surpassed that again and brought it to another level. You just wonder where it's going to peak, and there are more and more youngsters, they're starting at six, seven, eight years old.
"By the time they get to 12, 13, you never know, there's probably loads and loads of Luke Littlers out there. I'm kind of happy that I'm coming to the end of my career now, when you see the standard!"

Teen hockey star dies in fall at Ibiza hotel weeks after fellow Scot

A teenager has died after reportedly falling from a balcony in Spain just weeks after another Scot died at the same hotel. Gary Kelly died while on holiday at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio in the early hours of Monday morning. The 19-year-old was a promising ice hockey player from Dundee with team Aberdeen Lynx describing him as one of their 'brightest young stars'. Local Spanish media have reported that the teenager died after falling from the third floor of the hotel. The death comes just two weeks after Evan Thomson from Aberdeen died at the same hotel after also falling from a height while celebrating his 26th birthday. Ibiza Rocks has suspended all events due to take place 'out of respect for those involved' and says it will fully assist authorities. Spanish police have launched an investigation into the death, which they say 'appears to be an accident' Gary started his career in the Dundee Stars Junior set-up and represented Scotland at U17 level. The teenager joined the Lynx for the 2022/23 season and had a brief stint with the Dundee Rockets before returning to the North East. Sharing the news of his death, the club said: 'Gary was more than just a talented hockey player — he was a young man full of heart, passion, and dedication. 'On the ice, he gave everything he had. Off the ice, he brought energy, kindness, and an infectious love of life that lifted everyone around him. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and that spirit left a lasting mark on our team, our club, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. 'Gary's potential was limitless, but even more than that, he was simply a brilliant person to be around. He was part of our family, and his absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled. 'We send our deepest condolences to Gary's family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time. Our thoughts are with you, and we stand with you in grief and in love.' The Dundee Stars added: 'The Dundee Stars are truly devastated to learn that Gary Kelly has tragically passed away. 'We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary's family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. 'Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken to hear this tragic news. 'Gary was hugely talented and charismatic individual who had a great future ahead of him. His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed.' In a statement following Gary's death on Monday morning, Ibiza Rocks said: 'We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred. 'Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. 'The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. 'Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time. 'All customers will be informed directly via email.' A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil on the island added: 'For now, it appears to have been an accident. As always, an investigation is underway, and we're awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death with certainty.' A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.' £12m Chelsea star agrees to transfer after just one Premier League start

A Chelsea star reportedly wants to leave the club after just one year and one Premier League start at Stamford Bridge. After spending over £210million on seven new signings, Chelsea's priority for the rest of the summer transfer window is to offload their large number of unwanted players. The list mainly includes members of last summer's 'bomb-squad' who failed to secure permanent exits like Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell. But the Blues are also not afraid to sell off players who haven't been at the club long like Noni Madueke and Djordje Petrovic. And it seems like another young star will cut short his career in west London, with reports claiming that Renato Veiga has said yes to a transfer to Atletico Madrid. The Standard say the two clubs are in talks over a deal for the Portugal international whom Chelsea value at upwards of £35m, while there is also interest from Juventus and Bayern Munich. Chelsea bought Veiga from Basel in June last year for £12m, with the highly-rated 21-year-old signing a contract until 2031. Capable of playing left-back, centre-back and defensive midfield, he made 18 appearances under Enzo Maresca, most of which in the Conference League and the domestic cups. More Trending Just one of his seven Premier League appearances game from the start, in the 1-0 away win at Bournemouth in September. Due to the lack of minutes, Veiga was loaned out to Juventus in January and instantly became a first-team regular for the Serie A giants, before ending the season as a Nations League winner with Portugal. Despite his impressive potential, Chelsea decided to part ways with the youngster, leaving him out of their Club World Cup squad. Atletico are keen on signing him after ending their pursuit of Tottenham's World Cup winning centre-back Cristian Romero. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
