Iraq studies oil export routes via Syria and Lebanon after meeting with Syrian minister
Baghdad ( – Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul Ghani Al-Sawad, announced today, Tuesday (August 12, 2025), that Iraq is studying proposals to export oil through the Baniyas pipeline in Syria and the Tripoli pipeline in Lebanon. The announcement came following a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Mohammed Bashir, to discuss cooperation in the oil, gas, and energy sectors. According to a statement from the Ministry of Oil, Al-Sawad emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations and the importance of continued cooperation. He highlighted Iraq's plans to diversify its crude oil export outlets in light of increased production capacities and the need for greater flexibility in export operations. The discussion focused on the Iraq-Syria oil export pipeline, which was a key export route in previous decades, and the importance of either renewing or rehabilitating it. Al-Sawad added that Iraq has achieved significant milestones in gas investment and oil refining and is working to increase export capacities from its southern ports and resume exports via the Turkish pipeline to the Ceyhan port. He also mentioned that the Basra-Haditha pipeline project, with a capacity of 2.25 million barrels per day (BPD), would secure export quantities through the aforementioned outlets and supply crude oil to Iraqi refineries. Al-Sawad noted that Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency in diesel and kerosene production and is set to become self-sufficient in gasoline production by the end of the current year. The two sides agreed to form a joint committee to study the condition of the Iraqi-Syrian pipeline and the feasibility of resuming exports through it. The committee will also consider involving an international consultant to determine the pipeline's operational viability. The Syrian minister, for his part, expressed gratitude for the discussions and stressed the importance of regional cooperation to restore Syria's oil industry. He acknowledged that the pipeline had been subjected to sabotage and aging, necessitating rehabilitation or renewal. The discussions also extended to investment, with the presence of Haider Mohammed Makkiya, Head of the National Investment Commission, and water resources, with Minister of Water Resources Aoun Dhiab in attendance. Dhiab affirmed the necessity of adhering to agreements for water flow through the Euphrates River.

IHEC rejects political motives in candidate disqualification
Shafaq News – Baghdad The recent disqualification of several candidates from the upcoming elections is based on legal provisions and eligibility requirements, Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) spokesperson said on Tuesday, dismissing claims of political bias. IHEC official Jumana al-Ghalai told Shafaq News that the decision issued by the Board of Commissioners can be appealed before the judicial panel within three days of publication, and the panel's ruling is final and binding, explaining that the exclusions were based on information from relevant verification bodies confirming the candidates' 'failure to meet the conditions set by the elections law, including good conduct and the absence of convictions for offenses involving moral turpitude, such as administrative and financial corruption, even if covered by a general amnesty.' Contrary to what some claim, Al-Ghalai stressed that there is no disqualification driven by political or electoral motives. On Sunday, the commission announced the disqualification of 65 candidates for violating Article 7/3 of the amended Law No. 12 of 2018 on parliamentary and provincial council elections. It had earlier excluded others over criminal records involving charges of murder, bribery, forgery, fraud, and corruption.

Deadly clashes reignite between Syrian Army and SDF
2025-08-12T13:05:33+00:00 Shafaq News – Damascus Violent clashes erupted between the Syrian army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Tal Ma'az, east of Aleppo, the Syrian Ministry of Defense reported on Tuesday. According to a ministry statement, two SDF groups attempted to infiltrate army positions around 2:35 a.m., resulting in the death of one Syrian soldier. Army units later responded ''within engagement rules, repelling the infiltration and forcing the attackers to retreat to their original positions.'' Describing the escalation as part of frequent SDF attacks on army sites in Manbij, the ministry further condemned the SDF's intermittent closures of major roads in Aleppo city, labeling these actions as violations of agreements with the Syrian government. Earlier, the SDF accused Damascus-affiliated groups of provocative actions and ceasefire violations across several areas, including near Deir Hafer in eastern Aleppo countryside, as well as the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods—claims the Syrian Ministry of Defense subsequently dismissed. The ministry also dismissed footage purportedly showing significant army reinforcements heading toward contact lines near Deir Hafer and Tishrin Dam, calling the movements 'military training.' Tensions between Damascus and the SDF persist despite a March agreement to integrate some SDF units into the Syrian army. In recent weeks, both sides exchanged fire in Aleppo's countryside and carried out limited incursions, particularly following the recent 'The Unity of Stance Conference.'
