The United Arab Emirates Football Association has suspended defender Khalid Al-Dhanhani and forward Sultan Adel for five domestic matches and fined each player 500,000 AED ($136,132.21) on Sunday for misconduct during a national team training camp.
The players have left the camp with immediate effect due to a violation of disciplinary rules and will not travel with the squad to Kyrgyzstan for Tuesday's final third-round match of Asia's World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
'The disciplinary committee of the UAE Football Association has decided to suspend Sharjah player Khalid Al-Dhanhani and Shabab Al-Ahli player Sultan Adil for five domestic matches, and to impose a fine of Dh500,000 on each,' the UAE FA said in a statement on Sunday.
'They have also been removed from the senior national team list after committing a violation inside the national team training camp on June 7.'
With Iran and Uzbekistan qualifying for the World Cup after securing the top two spots in Group A, UAE will move into the fourth round of Asian qualifying along with Qatar, with the two Gulf teams set to finish third or fourth.
In this round, group winners will earn direct qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026, while runners-up will proceed to the fifth round for another shot at reaching the finals.

Virat Kohli speeding towards ODI return, batter hits nets as he clocks 17 years in international cricket

Virat Kohli is back at it. The right-handed batter, 36, has begun training ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia in October. Kohli, who has bid adieu to T20Is and Tests, was last seen in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 edition for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he lifted the trophy after his team defeated the Punjab Kings in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Virat Kohli clicked with a fan during training session in London. (Virat Kohli Fan Club - X) Recently, a report in Dainik Jagran claimed that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might call it quits in ODIs as well in the Australia series. The report claimed that the duo would be asked to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy if they harbour the dream of playing the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Amid all the reports regarding his ODI future, Virat Kohli is doing the best he can, and that is to train. The former India captain is currently in London, UK. On Monday, Kohli was spotted in the indoor nets, and he obliged a fan with a selfie. In the viral picture, Kohli can be seen smiling while the fan was also spotted beaming. Recently, another image from London had gone viral, in which Kohli was seen sporting a white beard. This led to fans getting concerned and asking whether the batter would call time on his international career. However, on the very same day, Kohli posted an Instagram Story of returning to the nets and beginning training ahead of the Australia ODIs. The three-match ODI series between India and Australia will begin on October 19. The three games will be played in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney. Virat Kohli's Test retirement Virat Kohli, 36, announced his Test retirement in May 2025, just days before the squad announcement for the England tour. In his last series against Australia, Kohli started off with a bang, scoring a century in the opener in Perth. However, it all went downhill from there as he kept chasing deliveries bowled outside off-stump. He ended the five-match series with just 190 runs. However, Kohli remains a beast in the ODI format. He has the most centuries by any batter in the 50-over format. He broke Sachin Tendulkar's record during the 2023 World Cup. Kohli was in fine form in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which India won under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. Ironically, Kohli also completed 17 years in international cricket on August 18 as he made his debut in 2008 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla.

Chetan Sharma backs Bumrah, urges players to follow physios' guidance

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may have drawn criticism for playing only three Tests during the series against England to manage his workload, but former BCCI chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has backed the bowler, saying players should go by the physios' advice as they are the "better judges". The injury-prone Bumrah played the first, third and fourth Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar five-match series, skipping two matches with Mohammed Siraj leading the pace-bowling attack. Sharma, himself a former pace bowler, said it was akin to a patient having to follow the doctor's advice. "If the medical team advises, if the doctor tells me that I have to take antibiotics, then I have to consume them. "If our physios is telling a player to manage workload, I think we should listen to them because they are the better judges," said Sharma on the sidelines of the country's public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati signing a deal with London-based cricket analytics company CricViz on Monday for the telecast of 104 episodes of "The Great Indian Cricket Show" on Doordarshan. Sharma, who forged a potent partnership with Kapil Dev for nearly half-a-decade and went on to take more than 125 wickets in Tests and ODIs before becoming the chairman of selectors, added that the team's performance in the England Test series gave him confidence that it will win the Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE next month. "I know that whoever is selected will be the best for the country. And the kind of cricket we are playing right now, I'm really proud with the way India played in England. "And I'm very confident that we are definitely going to win the Asia Cup (to be played in T20 format) because soon after that we are playing the T20 World Cup (in 2026) in India. "It's a very big thing when you are playing (the World Cup) in you own backyard. If the intent is right, the results will also be good," said Sharma after the event, which also had the likes of Madan Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, and former India players Murali Kartik and Aakash Chopra and Prasar Bharati Chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal. On whether Test skipper Shubman Gill, who smashed four centuries during the drawn Test series against England recently, should be included in the Asia Cup side to be led by charismatic batter Syuryakumar Yadav, Sharma said, India should select its best possible 15-member squad for the continental showpiece. "Look, that is up to the selectors what they see. My opinion does not matter because I am no longer the chairman (of selectors), so I will only say that the best possible team should be selected. "We have such good cricketers that not just the top-15 but even if the top-30 are selected, they are all very good. Really proud of them," he added.
