Signboard of US Hindu temple defaced, Indian consulate protests

Time of India2 days ago
NEW YORK: The signboard of a Hindu temple was defaced in the US city of Indiana, an incident described by the Indian consulate as "reprehensible". The "hateful act" took place at the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood city, the temple's public affairs account said in an X post on Tuesday.
This was the fourth time in less than a year that a BAPS temple has been targeted, it said.
The Indian Consulate in Chicago took strong note of the act and called it "reprehensible". The consulate added that it has raised the matter with the law enforcement authorities. It said that the consul general also addressed a gathering of devotees and local leadership, "calling for unity & solidarity, and vigilance against miscreants."
The temple administration said the "act has strengthened our community's resolve, and we remain united in our stand against anti-religious behaviour."

Pakistani national arrested over allegations of cheating, dowry harassment

Hyderabad, Aug 15 (PTI) A Pakistani national, who has been living here since 1998, was arrested after a case was registered against him over allegations of cheating, dowry harassment and threatening his wife, police said on Friday. Fahad (in his 30s) married a divorcee here in 2016 who later converted to Islam, they said. The couple were having disputes for the last two years. Fahad's wife allegedly caught him red-handed in the company of a woman with whom he had an extra-marital affair on Thursday and complained to Banjara Hills police. The matter was transferred to the Langar Houz police station as the couple live under its jurisdiction. Fahad's wife alleged that she was cheated by him as she was not aware of his Pakistani antecedents. She also alleged that his education certificates were fake and that he harassed her. As per preliminary information, Fahad's mother, who was born in India, married a Pakistani national in Saudi Arabia. She later acquired Pakistani citizenship. Fahad, who is currently working in a software company here, came to Hyderabad in 1998 along with his mother and his three siblings after his father passed away. Police said Fahad claimed to have obtained Indian citizenship, but did not produce any documentary evidence. Asked if he had valid documents to stay in India, a police official said the matter is under investigation. The full facts of the case would be known during the investigation, he added. China-Pakistan Nexus Equipping Terrorists In J&K With Advanced Technology: Report

STOCKHOLM: China-Pakistan technological nexus has drastically changed the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, systematically equipping terrorist organisations with sophisticated military-grade communication systems and surveillance technologies, a report cited on Friday. It stated that what were once conventional insurgency tactics have now evolved into advanced digital warfare capabilities, altering the dynamics of cross-border militancy. 'The strategic alliance between Beijing and Islamabad has created a formidable supply chain for advanced military hardware. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's 2025 report, China accounted for 81 per cent of Pakistan's arms imports between 2019 and 2023, totaling approximately $5.28 billion. This partnership extends far beyond traditional weaponry, encompassing dual-use technologies that have found their way into terrorist arsenals across Kashmir," the report in European Times highlighted. According to the report, the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam underscored the extent of the technological infiltration in the region where security forces seized Huawei satellite phones, Chinese-manufactured GPS devices, body cameras, and encrypted communication systems from the attack site. These recoveries marked a shift from unsophisticated militant operations to coordinated, technology-driven warfare that capitalises on Chinese infrastructure and expertise. It further mentioned that the cutting-edge network architecture enabled terrorists to coordinate in real-time, while keeping their operations secure. The operational impact, it stated, was visible during Operation Mahadev, when Indian security forces tracked terrorists using signals from a Chinese satellite phone activated in the Baisaran area. However, the elimination of three Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives, including the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam attack, highlighted not only technology's capabilities but also its weaknesses when effectively countered. China's engagement, the report detailed, extends beyond hardware to building a comprehensive digital infrastructure. Through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the telecom towers operated by China Mobile Pakistan (Zong) across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir provided digital coverage that reached Indian districts, including Kupwara, Rajouri, Poonch, and Uri. This network, the report said, created multiple layers of operational support for terrorist activities. It also emphasised that China's supply of sophisticated communication systems, surveillance capabilities, and weapons technology allowed Pakistan to deny any direct involvement while it escalated the lethality of terrorist operations. The China-Pakistan collaboration has led to several destabilising effects. "The entrenchment of Chinese technology in Kashmir's militant ecosystem represents more than a tactical evolution; it constitutes a strategic challenge to Indian sovereignty and regional stability. The China-Pakistan nexus has created a sophisticated support system that enhances terrorist capabilities while maintaining plausible deniability for state sponsors,' the report noted.

How Australia Cricketer's Action Turned Party In Yuvraj Singh's Room 'Dead Quiet' During 2011 WC: 'Bollywood Celebs...'

John Hastings recalls the moment when he had to call the hotel reception to tell them he will fix the damage caused in Yuvraj Singh's room. In a room full of people including international cricketers and Bollywood stars, a young Australia fast bowler's attempt to play his favourite songs at a party hosted by Yuvraj Singh resulted in a broken table and a pin-drop silence. The anecdote, narrated by the guilty party himself, is from during the 2011 ODI World Cup held in the Indian subcontinent. The then 25-year-old John Hastings was among the Aussie stars invited to attend a party at Yuvraj's suite which the former fast bowler says was bigger than his house back home. 'It was one of those ones where we'd obviously had a few and I think you know we'd obviously been invited up to Yuvi's (Yuvraj Singh) room and walked in and there was a suite. It was massive. It was as big as my house over here. And I remember looking around, I just jeez there's so many people in here," Hastings said on LiSTNR sport. While the size and crowd impressed the young Aussie, the music didn't. 'What's going on with this music? So, I was fiddling around with the laptop trying to get some of my playlist on and I sat on the edge of this…ledge that had a phone on there. There was a laptop, I sat on it and boom off it came down on the floor and I just remember everyone just stopped and looked and went silent, dead quiet, pin could drop," Hastings remembered. The situation could have easily intimidated Hastings, but he recalls keeping his calm and calling the reception to inform them of the damage he had caused. However, the phone in the room had been damaged as well. 'I just went, 'What am I going to do here? I'm a young kid.' It's Yuvraj Singh's room. There are so many people here. There's probably Bollywood celebrities everywhere, and I just went, 'Right, stay calm,' and I went to the phone, which was already out off the wall, and I'd seen the cord be ripped out of the wall. So, I just thought, I'll just make sure that I've made this right. And there was no one on the end of the line. So, I picked up the phone. I said, 'Reception, yep. John Hastings, I just want to make sure that there's a bit of damage in Mr. Singh's room. I'll make sure I fix it up. I'm in the room such and such.' And everyone was like, 'Well done, mate. That's brilliant.' And everyone just kicked on, played on," Hastings said. 'I actually went down to reception to make sure that I could rectify the situation, but there was never another word. So, happy days. I didn't have to pay for any damage and we had a really good night," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
