Top cop fired over 2019 Easter Sunday bombings

The Star6 days ago
THE country's independent regulator has sacked a senior police officer for failing to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which killed 279 people including 45 foreigners.
The National Police Commission dismissed Nilantha Jayawardena, then head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), for disregarding prior warnings of an impending attack by Islamic extremists.
Court records show that Jayawardena had been alerted to a possible terror strike 17 days before the coordinated suicide attacks on April 21, 2019, which targeted three hotels and three churches.
More than 500 people were also wounded in the bombings.
Jayawardena had been found guilty on all seven counts of negligence and dereliction of duty by a disciplinary inquiry led by a retired judge, the police commission said late Saturday.
'Considering the gravity of the charges, the Commission decided to give him the maximum punishment,' the statement said.
Following the Easter bombings, Sri Lanka's worst terror attack on civilians, Jayawardena was removed from his position as SIS chief but elevated to the role of deputy head of the police force, overseeing administration.
However, he was placed on compulsory leave a year ago, pending a disciplinary hearing, after repeated judicial orders to take action against him.
A top-level investigation initiated shortly after the attack found that then-president Maithripala Sirisena and four of his senior officials, including Jayawardena, should face criminal prosecution for their lapses.
In accordance with Supreme Court orders issued in January 2023 following a civil case, they have paid just over US$1mil in damages to the victims. The 2019 bombings were blamed on a local group that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
Sri Lanka's new government, under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has vowed to step up investigations into the Easter attacks and uncover those responsible for the bombings. — AFP

Ex-Hong Kong social worker given community service for defrauding authorities

A retired Hong Kong social worker behind a dropped legal challenge arising from the San Tin Technopole project has been sentenced to community service for defrauding authorities out of HK$16,780 (US$2,138) in welfare benefits. Eastern Court on Thursday adopted a probation officer's recommendation to sentence Eddie Tse Sai-kit to 120 hours of unpaid community work after his lawyer said he 'recklessly' understated his earnings to obtain four months' worth of welfare allowances last year. A presentencing report cited the 68-year-old defendant as saying he had mistakenly believed that he only needed to report his average monthly income over the year in his application to the Social Welfare Department. Acting Principal Magistrate David Cheung Chi-wai at one point questioned whether the court should accept the 68-year-old defendant's earlier guilty plea, before concluding that his failure to make an accurate declaration went beyond mere negligence and deserved criminal sanction. Cheung also noted that Tse had admitted wrongdoing at the first opportunity and was remorseful. Tse was arrested early this year while he was challenging an environmental impact assessment report that endorsed the development of a technology hub near the mainland Chinese border. Despite securing permission from the High Court to commence judicial review proceedings, Tse later dropped the case, citing 'widespread harassment and intimidation'. A pro-Beijing newspaper had also depicted Tse as an activist 'disrupting Hong Kong' by blindly opposing development under the guise of promoting environmental preservation. According to a prosecution case summary, Tse applied for an Old Age Living Allowance of HK$4,195 in June 2023 and claimed his monthly income was HK$5,000, which was below the limit of HK$10,710 at the time. He received a total of HK$80,460 from the department between July 2023 and December 2024. But the social worker failed to declare his earnings from Polytechnic University, where he had worked as a part-time fieldwork supervisor from January 2021 to May this year. Tse earned an additional monthly salary of between HK$6,000 and HK$19,200 from June to December last year for his work at the university, according to the summary. He also failed to notify the department that he had accepted a one-off 'honorarium' of HK$24,000 from the Social Workers Registration Board for serving on its disciplinary committee panel. An investigation concluded Tse would not have been entitled to the monthly allowance in July, August, November and December last year – an amount totalling HK$16,780 – if he had not concealed his income. Tse pleaded guilty earlier this month to four counts of fraud. Magistrate Cheung had ordered that Tse pay HK$16,780 in compensation to the department as part of his penalty. The defence said in a previous hearing that Tse had retired from social work after his arrest. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

Islam and Malay rights secure under Unity Govt says Asyraf Wajdi

KUALA BERANG: UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has refuted allegations that Islam and the Malay community are under threat within the current Unity Government, labelling such claims as unfounded slander. He emphasised that Islam continues to thrive under the administration, backed by substantial government funding. 'This figure excludes allocations for Islamic programmes and initiatives to strengthen Malay education and economy through agencies like MARA and KKDW,' Asyraf Wajdi stated. Speaking at the opening of the Hulu Terengganu UMNO division delegates meeting 2025 in Jenagor, he highlighted the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and cabinet ministers in advancing the Islamic agenda over the past 30 months. Asyraf Wajdi, who also chairs MARA, urged UMNO members to counter false narratives that could disrupt Malaysia's multiracial harmony. 'These accusations stem from envy towards UMNO's role in the Unity Government,' he added. Terengganu UMNO chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat was also present at the event. - Bernama

Indian police arrest man operating fake embassy near Delhi

NEW DELHI: Police in India have arrested a man accused of running a fake embassy from a rented house near New Delhi and duping job seekers out of money with promises of overseas employment. Harsh Vardhan Jain, 47, was operating an 'illegal West Arctic embassy by renting a house' in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, which neigbhours the capital, local police said. Jain, according to police, claimed to be the ambassador of fictional nations 'like West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia, Lodonia'. He allegedly used vehicles with fake diplomatic plates and shared doctored photos of himself with Indian leaders to bolster his claims. 'His main activities involved acting as a broker to secure work in foreign countries for companies and private individuals, as well as operating a hawala (money transfer) racket through shell companies,' the police said in a statement following his arrest earlier this week. He is also accused of money laundering. During a raid on Jain's property, police said they recovered $53,500 in cash in addition to doctored passports and forged documents bearing stamps of India's foreign ministry. AFP was unable to reach Jain or his representatives for comment. Westarctica, cited by the police as one of the countries Jain claimed to be representing, is a US-registered nonprofit 'dedicated to studying and preserving this vast, magnificent, desolate region' of Western Antarctica. In a statement, it said it had appointed Jain as its 'Honorary Consul to India' after he had made a 'generous donation'. 'He was never granted the position or authority of ambassador,' it added. - AFP
