J.J. Spaun shot a bogey-free 66 in the first round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont, tying the record for the lowest opening round score at that course in a U.S. Open.
Spaun made four birdies in his first eight holes and then made 10 consecutive pars, including several long putts.
Spaun considered a career change last season but was inspired by the movie "Wimbledon" to continue playing.
OAKMONT, Pa. – J.J. Spaun can't miss even when he tries.
To show how slick the greens are at Oakmont Country Club, Spaun attempted to miss a putt for a segment on ESPN's SportsCenter on Wednesday and the putts kept going in. That carried over to the opening round of the 125th U.S. Open, where Spaun drained six par putts of seven feet or longer.
'Don't try so hard, I guess,' he said.
Spaun signed for a bogey-free round of 4-under 66 on Thursday, tying Andrew Landry in 2016 for the lowest opening round score at Oakmont during a U.S. Open. There were 443 rounds played at the 2016 U.S. Open and only one player managed a bogey-free round – Dustin Johnson also in the first round. Spaun benefited from playing early in the morning under favorable scoring conditions and took advantage. Still, only five players in the morning wave managed to break par on the cruel course not far from the blue-collar city of Pittsburgh.
'I was scared. I was like, 'Damn, I don't know what I'm going to shoot today,' ' said Spaun, who shot his low 18-hole score in a major and was a shot better than South Africa's Thriston Lawrence.
Starting at 10, Spaun chipped in for birdie from 20 feet off the right edge of the green, and it settled his nerves. He said he thought to himself, 'This is going to be one of those days,' he recalled. 'Kept running with it.'
Spaun, 34, made his four birdies in his first eight holes and then hung on for dear life with 10 straight pars. He holed par putts of 17 feet, 12 feet, and three times from 7 feet. When he drained a 12-foot par saver at the first, his 10th hole of the day, he was officially in the zone.
'Curled it in there,' he said, 'and it felt like one of those days where you couldn't really miss anything that was a reasonable putt to make.'
In addition to the fast start chipping in for birdie, Spaun was perfect in scrambling, getting up and down in all six attempts. On Monday, he started working with short-game coach Josh Gregory.
'He helped me kind of learn how to read the lies in this kind of rough and change my technique a little bit,' Spaun said.
Funny enough, Spaun has been fighting his full swing, particularly his club position at the top, which was a little too down the line for his liking, and after the Memorial, he attempted to tweak it.
'I kind of went down the rabbit hole a few days at home and just kind of threw it out the window a few days before coming here,' he said. 'I feel uncomfortable playing at home with this; how am I going to do this at the Open?'
Spaun has one career PGA Tour title to his credit and during a tumultuous campaign last season he considered whether his playing career had stalled and he should find a new line of work where he could be at home more often with his young kids. It was a surprising concession from golf's version of a Yorkshire Terrier. In a game focused on the Dobermans and Malamutes, Spaun is fearless, punching above his weight and fits in well near the Alleghany Mountains with his coal miner's complexion.
Spaun rallied late in the season to keep his card, putting the job search plans on hold, and this season pushed Rory McIlroy all the way to a three-hole aggregate playoff at the Players Championship in March. How far down the road did he get to finding a new career? Not that far, he admitted.
'I hoped I made enough to retire,' he said.
But on a December flight to England, he watched the movie 'Wimbledon,' and it provided an attitude adjustment of sorts. The plot of an older, washed-up tennis pro who ends up winning arguably the most famous major in the racquet sport just as he's thinking of quitting, resonated with Spaun. 'Maybe that could be me,' he said.
So far, the script at the U.S. Open is writing itself for Spaun.

Wyndham Clark Loses Temper, Goes Berserk in U.S. Open Locker Room

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Oakmont Country Club has never been kind to golfers, and the 125th U.S. Open proved no different. The course's brutal setup left even the best players frustrated. Bryson DeChambeau, the defending champion, missed the cut after a 10-over finish. Shane Lowry, who had already made headlines for his hot-mic F-bomb, struggled through Rounds 1 and 2, ultimately failing to advance. And then there was Phil Mickelson, who quietly exited after posting 8-over, possibly bidding farewell to the U.S. Open. But while disappointment was widespread, no one took their frustration out on Oakmont's loker room—except Wyndham Clark, allegedly. (Photo by) More Getty Images Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, had a rough week. He carded consecutive rounds of 74, missing the cut by a single stroke with a bogey on his final hole. His frustration boiled over, and according to reports, he trashed the locker room at Oakmont Country Club. NUCLR GOLF shared images from inside the dressing room, showing broken lockers and scattered debris. Without context, the scene looked like a break-in, but it was Clark who had allegedly damaged the venue. 🚨🥾🚪 #NEW: Wyndham Clark allegedly damaged several lockers in the change room at Oakmont Country Club following a missed cut, per @TronCarterNLU. Additionally, Clark recently destroyed a T-mobile sign at the PGA Championship not long ago. Is this behaviour acceptable? — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) June 15, 2025 Tron Carter of the "No Laying Up" podcast confirmed the incident, posting on X: "Multiple sources confirming that the Blow Pig really got after it in the Oakmont locker room. Super classy, desecrating one of the most historic spots in golf AND on the heels of his behavior at Quail Hollow. Probably time to put him in the cooler for a few months." Clark's temper has been an issue before. Just last month, he smashed a T-Mobile sign at the PGA Championship after a poor drive. He later apologized, admitting, "My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate. I hold myself to a high standard, and yesterday I fell short of those standards." Wyndham Clark under fire Fans weren't letting this latest outburst slide. The comment section on Carter's post was filled with outrage. "That's a historical locker room too, I'd ban him from ever playing there again," one fan wrote. Another demanded action: "He should be suspended. Imagine being a guest at a club and doing that after the round." Comparisons were drawn to Rory McIlroy, who had destroyed a tee marker on the 17th hole after a failed drive. Some fans argued that Clark's behavior was worse, calling him "immature" and suggesting a three-month suspension. Others pointed out that Scottie Scheffler had also damaged the fairway in frustration during Round 1, fueling calls for stricter discipline across the Tour. With Round 4 set to begin Sunday morning, all eyes will be on the final showdown. Sam Burns leads at 4-under, with Adam Scott and J.J. Spaun one shot back. But for Clark, the tournament is over—and the fallout from his actions is just beginning. More Golf: Scottie Scheffler's U.S. Open Hopes Staring at Historic Difficulty

NBA Insider Says Kevin Durant To Knicks Trade Will Be "Complicated" Amid Major Giannis Antetokounmpo Update

NBA Insider Says Kevin Durant To Knicks Trade Will Be "Complicated" Amid Major Giannis Antetokounmpo Update originally appeared on Fadeaway World. After the NBA Playoffs ended for the Bucks, an ESPN report sparked multiple rumors that Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to be open to considering a trade from the Bucks. Now, another ESPN employee, Brian Windhorst, who is also an NBA insider, puts an end to all the rumors revolving around the Greek superstar in Milwaukee. Advertisement Windhorst appeared on the most recent segment of the 'Get Up' show, where he dropped a massive update on the Bucks superstar's near future. The cast of the 'Get Up' show on ESPN deliberated upon the influence of a Giannis Antetokounmpo or a Kevin Durant trade on the Knicks if they choose to move for either of these players. Windhorst jumped in to quickly drop a massive update on the potential Knicks trade for both superstars. 'There's not going to be a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade in the short-term future. The league has come to terms with the realization that the Bucks are going to keep him and Giannis is not going to ask for a trade. I can't speak to what might happen in August. They can't pin any coaching decision on Giannis Antetokounmpo and they probably shouldn't plan to do it on Kevin Durant either, because I don't think they're in the best position to trade for him. I think you should remove those two options, remove those two as any indications on how they might approach their [head coach hiring].' 'I am saying Giannis Antetokounmpo is not getting traded before the Knicks are hiring a coach. So you can't pin the coach to what you may do when a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade [happens] and I think a Kevin Durant trade is going to be very complicated for the Knicks. I do not think that you can make your decision based on the acquisition of one of these star players,' Windhorst further added. ' What Does This Mean For Giannis Antetokounmpo And Kevin Durant? While the Knicks were rumored to be among the mix to trade for Kevin Durant or Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, Windhorst believes that either of those trades could be messy for New York, and one of them will likely not happen at all [Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Knicks]. While the Knicks can trade for Kevin Durant, Windhorst discourages it as he feels they may have to give up too much to get him. Advertisement The Antetokounmpo update makes it clear that one of the biggest pieces of news we will hear first after the end of this season is where Kevin Durant will land next. Multiple reports have suggested that Durant is essentially standing on top of a sinking ship in the Suns and will look to jump ship as soon as he gets the green light. Some sources even claimed that a trade for him may have already been agreed in principle. With Antetokounmpo now presumably locked into the Bucks for the near future, Durant will likely be the biggest name in the trade market this season. But for the Knicks, bringing Durant on board could be a complicated task. They first need to resolve their head coaching role vacancy before entering the trade market for a superstar.
