First responders the hit of 30th annual Balboa Island Parade, USC mascot brings up the rear in surprise

With a light marine layer providing relief from the sun, the 30th annual Balboa Island parade Sunday drew an estimated 5,000 people, a crowd that parade co-chair Jack Callahan attributed in part to the theme, 'A Tribute to Our First Responders.'
Firefighters, police, paramedics, harbor patrol personnel and lifeguards were the honorees, applauded with enthusiasm by parade-goers.
'This year's Balboa Island Parade was our most successful one yet,' said Callahan, who co-chaired the event with Gail Vasterling for the Balboa Island Improvement Assn.. 'For 30 fun-filled years the parade has been an important part of life on Balboa Island.'
'The parade honors not just our firefighters and all of the first responders, but everyone in the community,' said Newport Beach Fire Chief Jeff Boyles, the parade's grand marshal. He acknowledged fire station No. 4, which opened the same year as the first parade, as an important community landmark.
'We appreciate and thank the residents of Balboa Island and Newport Beach for 30 incredible years and we look forward to many more,' Boyles said.
Newport Beach resident Tracy Davis with her granddaughter Eva, who loves seeing the Frenchies and pugs passing by in the parade, had a ringside seat on the bridge Sunday.
There was a lot for them to see, considering there were 99 entries in the two-hour-long extravaganza, according to organizers.
'It's our absolute favorite parade,' Davis said as the parade was getting underway. 'I can't wait to honor our first responders.'
The promised 'four-legged surprise guest' this year was none other than Traveler, the majestic white horse mascot for USC who was the grand finale.

Vanessa Bryant Shuts Down Creepy Pregnancy Rumors, Social Media Applauds

Source: JC Olivera / Getty There's nothing social media loves more than a hypothetical or rumor that ignites think pieces for days to come. Unfortunately, the most recent featured the late Kobe Bryant's wife, Vanessa, claiming she's pregnant. Vanessa rarely speaks about her personal life, but she went on Instagram Stories to dispel the tall tale. The 43-year-old posted a picture of an unbothered Rihanna floating in water, with a drink in hand, flipping off the camera with a caption reading, 'Me protecting my peace, not pregnant & having fun all summer.' She followed it up with another Rihanna meme showing the singer smirking with the words, 'I'm not mean, I'm just not the one.' There is no exact source for the rumor, but a quick search on X reveals a video from this weekend with 12 million views and 40,000 likes of an image of Vanessa that some claim shows a baby bump. Attached is a man fighting to believe that Vanessa shouldn't be allowed to move on after Kobe died in 2020. 'Kobe wife pregnant, and y'all females out here defending her, talking about 'oh she's allowed to move on.' Actually no the f-ck she not,' the man says. 'When you got kids by a mothef-cker like Kobe Bryant, you ain't never supposed to disgrace his legacy.' He continues, 'She got pregnant by the Black Mamba. She supposed to die a legend like him. If it was up to me, she wouldn't have access to no more funds or my estate.' To be clear, Vanessa has four kids with the Lakers legend, including Natalia, 22, Bianka, 8, Capri, 5, and Gianna, who died at 13 alongside her father in the tragic helicopter crash. The eldest, Natalia, graduated from USC in May, with her diploma handed to her by Lakers president Jeanie Buss while wearing a red graduation stole embroidered with Bryant's Black Mamba sheath logo and the message, 'Thank you Mom & Dad.' See how social media is reacting to the rumors below. Vanessa Bryant Shuts Down Creepy Pregnancy Rumors, Social Media Applauds was originally published on Black America Web Featured Video CLOSE

USC's Mark Carrier returns to College Football Hall of Fame ballot

USC's Mark Carrier returns to College Football Hall of Fame ballot USC football fans know that the Trojan version of Mark Carrier is separate from the other Mark Carrier. USC's Mark Carrier played in the secondary for the Trojans. The other Mark Carrier became an NFL receiver, coming out of Nicholls State. USC's version of Mark Carrier is once again on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot. We wrote this about the historically important Trojan: "Carrier owns an important place in USC football history. He helped coach Larry Smith make three straight Rose Bowls, returning the Trojans to an expected standard after the mediocrity of the Ted Tollner years and a general dry spell for much of the 1980s. "USC made the Rose Bowl only once in a seven-year span from 1980 through 1986. Carrier lifted the Trojans back to the Granddaddy on a regular basis, which is the kind of transformation the program seeks today under Lincoln Riley, having made the Rose Bowl only once since the 2008 season (2016 under Sam Darnold)." USC had a powerhouse defense in the late 1980s, with the 1988 team being one of the very best in college football. Mark Carrier was an important part of that team, making him one of the greatest Trojans ever. Maybe this will be the time when Carrier gets carried over the finish line and into the College Football Hall of Fame.
