India needs battery technology beyond lithium, says industry experts
This assumes significance as the electric vehicle (EV) market is gaining significant traction in the country, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
Batteries are one of the key components of EVs, with Li-ion technology currently leading the industry due to its high energy density and quick charging, a statement said.
However, it stated that concerns over the limited availability of raw materials for these batteries could create production challenges and potential shortages.
This highlights the urgent need for alternative battery technologies.
Researchers and experts are actively exploring innovative solutions, with Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB), thermo-mechanical systems, and sodium-ion technologies emerging as promising developments that could transform the EV industry and drive the next generation of electric vehicles.
VRFB is a rechargeable energy storage solution that leverages vanadium ions for enhanced longevity.
The global market for VRFB was valued at USD 394.7 million in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.7 per cent from 2024 to 2030.
Concerning this, industry experts and leaders highlighted that "India needs battery technology beyond Lithium-ion", at India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025, organised by industry body India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) from July 8-11.
Industry experts demanded that India needs to expand non-lithium energy storage technologies to address its rapidly growing and diverse energy demands.
They emphasised the necessity for alternative solutions to ensure grid stability, meet industrial loads, and promote clean mobility.
Avishek Kumar, Co-founder and CEO of VFlowTech, emphasised, "While lithium-ion batteries have reached the mass adoption stage, there is a growing need to diversify energy storage solutions." India should look beyond lithium.
Highlighting the rise of sodium-ion batteries as a cost-effective, temperature-resilient alternative ideal for stationary applications, William Tope, CEO of LiNa Energy, said, "As we start to move towards very high penetrations of intermediate renewable generation, the importance of other battery industries and long duration energy storage to load shift at large scale from the off peak period to the peak period is incredibly important."
Paul Smith of Energy Dome said the company's CO2-based CEAS storage is a market-ready solution that scales up to 1 GWh, which is now entering India through a partnership with NTPC.
Gunjan Kapadia, Co-founder and CEO of Sthyr Energy, introduced its zinc-air battery technology, which offers long-duration storage of 10-24 hours to support deeper discharge cycles.
"As we increase more and more renewables in the system, we need to have more storage in the system to balance the renewables," Saurav Mitra, Director at Sumitomo SHI FW, said, adding that "for this, we need innovative storage solutions like thermo-mechanical systems."
He further demonstrated Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) as a thermo-mechanical, zero-critical-mineral solution with 80 per cent component sourcing already in India.

Tariffing India won't stop Putin: House Foreign Affairs Committee
New York/Washington, Aug 15 (PTI) Imposing tariffs on India will not stop Russian President Vladimir Putin or address Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said on Friday. The committee's post on X came in response to a statement by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that if 'things don't go well" between US President Donald Trump and Putin at their Alaska summit meeting, then secondary sanctions on India for purchasing Russian oil could go up. 'Tariffing India won't stop Putin. If Trump really wanted to address Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, maybe punish Putin and give Ukraine the military aid it needs. Everything else is smoke and mirrors," the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said. Bessent, in an interview to Bloomberg on Wednesday, said, 'I think everyone has been frustrated with President Putin. We expected that he would come to the table in a more fulsome way. It looks like he may be ready to negotiate." 'And we put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up," he added. When asked about China, the main purchaser of Russian crude, Bessent had said he is 'not going to get ahead of the president, but the president is the best at creating leverage for himself and he will make it clear to President Putin that all options are on the table". On whether sanctions can go up or loosened, Bessent had said, 'Sanctions can go up, they can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely." He had added that even as Trump is meeting with Putin, the Europeans 'need to join us" and need to be willing to 'put on these secondary sanctions". Bessent recalled that at the G7 meeting in Canada this year, he asked the leaders at the table whether they are willing to put a 200 per cent secondary tariff on China. 'And you know what, everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing," he said. Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said. Govt implements ₹3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles
New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said the annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. "Till 4:30 PM on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas," it added. The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of ₹ 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said.

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated a special economic zone (SEZ) in Islamabad to be set up by a Chinese textile group . State-run the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that the project would generate exports worth USD 400 million for the country. It will be set up by the Chinese textile group Challenge Fashion Private Limited , which is set to invest USD 100 million over five years in the project. PM Sharif welcomed the establishment of an SEZ, saying that the "initiative would facilitate technology transfer, skill development, and sustainable industrial growth". He also met with the company's delegation - led by its chairman Huwang Weiguo , expressing Pakistan's willingness to "take bilateral ties to new heights", APP quoted him as saying. Live Events The prime minister assured the delegation of his government's complete facilitation for setting up the zone as part of the "industrial component of CPEC ," and thanked the delegation for having faith in the Pakistani market, APP reported. The prime minister expressed Pakistan's desire to set up more such units across the country and hoped to benefit from China's textile sector. He also said that "a China-Pakistan Business-to-Business Conference would soon be held in China, providing an opportunity for collaboration between private businesses of both countries," APP reported. Chairman Huwang said he aims to establish a modern textile industry in Pakistan and thanked the prime minister for his support and hospitality. Pakistan and China have strong economic ties and the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a leading exponent of the relationship.
