RAJKOT/GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat government is likely to announce a day-long state mourning in memory of former chief minister,
Vijay Rupani
, who died in the Air India Ahmedabad-London Dreamliner crash on Thursday.
Rupani's son, Rushabh, who arrived from the US early on Saturday, provided DNA samples to assist authorities in identifying his father's mortal remains.
Earlier, Rupani's sister submitted samples, but those did not match. "We are awaiting confirmation from the DNA results," a
BJP
member close to the family said.
In Rupani's hometown, Rajkot, preparations are underway for his last rites, with BJP and local authorities organising a grand funeral procession to allow citizens to bid a final farewell to their beloved neta.
The procession will begin at his residence in Prakash Society.
A prayer meeting is also being planned at Racecourse, although the final decision rests with the Rupani family.
Rajkot police issued a notification restricting vehicle movement and parking on the funeral route, anticipating heavy turnout from across the city and nearby villages. "A huge number of BJP workers, traders, and citizens are expected to join the procession," police stated.

Throughout Saturday, senior politicians and well-wishers gathered at the Rupani residence in Gandhinagar to express their condolences.
BJP said members approached officials multiple times over the last two days, suggesting that Rupani's remains could be identified through a distinctive wristwatch he was known to wear. However, at least two attempts to identify a victim wearing such a watch proved unsuccessful, sources said.

He warned the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) and the state administration that a dharna will be staged at 10 am on Monday, 16 June, outside the PSPCL executive engineer's office in Zirakpur to mark the protest. Sharma said that the AAP government has 'ruined' Punjab's electricity grid by ignoring upgrades, fresh recruitment and routine maintenance, leading to daily unannounced outages across Zirakpur. 'During the Akali-BJP tenure we strengthened the electricity infrastructure and made Punjab a surplus-power state,' he claimed. Their final sentencing, ranging from 12 to 27 months, was delivered by a New York federal court on June 5. The mastermind, Hirenkumar Patel, 40, was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He earlier pleaded guilty to participating in 42 cash deliveries amounting to over $7.7 million across various locations on the US East Coast. According to case details, the group moved the money between Feb and Sept 2023, using an informal transfer system that relied on physical cash deliveries and the use of informal brokers to transfer funds to designated recipients in India without the money physically leaving the US. Officials said the accused collected large amounts of cash from individuals in the US, which was then delivered to customers of a vendor operating on the dark web. This vendor converted cryptocurrency into cash for clients, the top ones being hackers and drug dealers. None of the six Gujaratis had licences to operate a money-transmitting business under federal or New York state law.
