Mexico president backs woman referee facing death threats over Leagues Cup match
Katia Itzel Garcia has said she was the target of insults and death threats following Monterrey's 2-3 defeat to Cincinnati in a match of the Leagues Cup, a North American competition, last Thursday.
Her decision to award a goal to the US team that some claimed appeared to have been scored from an offside position sparked anger among Mexican supporters.
'In Mexico, in a country where ten women die every day and where 91 women and men die every day, violence should not be normalized. Violence should not exist anywhere,' the 32-year-old referee wrote on Instagram.
She said netizens had threatened to kill her and her family.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for Garcia on Wednesday, calling her 'extraordinary... she has to be three times better than a man to be recognized.'
Sheinbaum said the government would contact Garcia 'to see if she needs help.'
In a message on Instagram, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Monday he was 'shocked and saddened by the threats made against referee Katia Itzel.'
The Mexican Football Federation also condemned 'acts of intimidation and threats' directed at the referee.
Mexico, the United States and Canada will host the next FIFA World Cup in 2026.
According to the UN, ten femicides are reported in Mexico on average each day. — AFP

Harry Kane (right) described his partnership with Son Heung-min as one of the best in Premier League history, built on strong connection. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : Harry Kane paid tribute to his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Son Heung-min, describing their partnership as 'one of the best' in Premier League history following the South Korean's departure from the club. Son, who combined with Kane for 47 league goals to form a lethal partnership for the best part of a decade at Spurs, joined Los Angeles FC on a record-breaking Major League Soccer transfer on Wednesday. The 33-year-old South Korea skipper had moved to North London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, bagging 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances and leading them to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League title in May. 'Massive congratulations to him and his career at Tottenham,' Bayern Munich striker Kane told reporters after his side's 4-0 friendly win over former club Spurs on Thursday. 'First and foremost, a great person. I've got to know him really well as a friend, and just how humble he is and how good a guy he is. 'I think as a player, you know, we had one of the best partnerships in Premier League history. We just had that connection that we loved. 'It's a great way for his Tottenham career to end, to lift the trophy last year with the team… and now it's a new chapter for him, he'll go to LA, and I wish him all the best, and I hope to see him soon and we can catch up.' Kane spent most of his career at Spurs after joining their academy as an 11-year-old, scoring a club record 280 goals in over 430 appearances in all competitions. The 32-year-old England captain joined German giants Bayern in August 2023.

Manchester United seal €85m deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko
MANCHESTER, Aug 8 — Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to 85 million euros (US$99 million, £74 million) to sign striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig on Thursday, according to multiple reports in England. The BBC, Athletic and Sky Sports reported United will pay an initial 76.5 million euros for the 22-year-old with a further 8.5 million euros due in add-ons. Newcastle were also interested in signing the Slovenian, possibly to replace wantaway star Alexander Isak, a target for Liverpool. However, Sesko has been wooed by the enduring stature of the 20-time English champions despite a lack of European football in the coming season. His arrival will complete an overhaul of the Red Devils' blunt attack. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were signed earlier in the window, taking United's total spend on forwards in recent months to over £200 million. Sesko had also previously been linked with Arsenal after impressing during his two-year spell in Germany, where he scored 39 times in 87 appearances for Leipzig, including 21 last season. Standing 1.95 metres (6ft 4ins) tall, Sesko's towering physique, electric pace and eye for goal have earned comparisons with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Like Haaland, he also made his name at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany in 2023. United are banking on Sesko realising his abundant potential to fire them back into contention at the top of the Premier League table. Between them, Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo combined for 58 goals last season. The massive outlay on their arrivals needs to bear fruit quickly with United under pressure to meet financial sustainability rules, especially without the revenue of European football this season. — AFP
