Red Bull warned FIA of potential trickery against Verstappen
MONTREAL, June 16 (Reuters) - Red Bull spoke to Formula One's governing body before the Canadian Grand Prix to warn them that Max Verstappen's rivals might try and lure the Dutch driver into a one-race ban, according to team boss Christian Horner.
Four-times world champion Verstappen arrived in Montreal with 11 penalty points on his super licence, following a collision with Mercedes' George Russell in Spain, and 12 triggering an automatic suspension.
He will not shed any points until after Austria, Red Bull's home race, on June 29.
Horner revealed after Sunday's race that Red Bull spoke to race director Rui Marques after a drivers' meeting on Friday to express their concern and ask him to watch out for any potential trickery.
"I think that it was inevitable that there was going to be some potential gamesmanship," Horner told reporters.
"It's something that we raised after the driver's briefing with the race director, just so that they were mindful of it as well, because it was clear that that kind of stuff goes on.
"We just said to him 'Look, could they please keep an eye on it because there's been obviously comments have been raised in the media'."
Russell said after qualifying on pole that he had more penalty points to play with than Verstappen and that could work to his advantage.
After the Briton won on Sunday, with Verstappen second, Red Bull protested.
A subsequent stewards document rejecting the protest revealed that Red Bull had claimed unsportsmanlike behaviour by Russell when the safety car was deployed.
Red Bull argued that Russell braked unnecessarily and erratically behind the safety car along the back straight and complained over the team radio that Verstappen had gone past when not allowed to.
Red Bull said the radio message "displayed unsportsmanlike intent" and Russell's braking had taken Verstappen by surprise, leaving him no alternative but to overtake momentarily.
They also suggested that onboard cameras showed Russell looking in his mirrors before braking "to force (Verstappen) to overtake to force an infringement."
Russell denied it, said he was not trying to force an investigation and Mercedes pointed out they had not lodged any complaint. The stewards accepted there had been no unsportsmanlike conduct.
Russell and Verstappen have a simmering rivalry and Red Bull have protested twice in the space of five races against the Mercedes driver.

Chelsea player ratings: Pedro Neto star of the show but petulant Marc Cucurella has day to forget
CHELSEA opened their Club World Cup campaign with a low-key 2-0 win over LAFC. Enzo Maresca named a strong side for the game in Atlanta, not taking the Blues' MLS opponents lightly. 12 New boy Liam Delap started on the bench, with Maresca going for a more tried and tested line-up. But despite beginning as a sub, Delap did come on to have an impact. Goals by Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez went on to seal victory for the Blues. Here's how SunSport's Etienne Fermie rated each Chelsea star on the night. ROBERT SANCHEZ - 6 Flapped at a free-kick in the first-half. Made a really good stop with his feet to deny Denis Bouanga on 56 minutes. Produced another save late on, but did the palm the ball into a dangerous area. REECE JAMES - 5 Booked for a late challenge. Involved in a brief scuffle before half-time and did not emerge for the second half. Not the England star's finest outing. 12 TOSIN ADARABIOYO - 6 Yellow carded on the stroke of half-time but otherwise unruffled in the opening 45. The former Manchester City starlet was tested more as the game went on. 12 Chelsea stars including Cole Palmer fly to the US for Club World Cup LEVI COLWILL - 6 Reasonably solid performance at the back, although the Blues' defence did get stretched as the game went on. Colwill was guilty of misplacing passes at times. MARC CUCURELLA - 4 Beaten incredibly easily by David Martinez on 51 minutes, but was spared his blushes when the LAFC substitute shanked his subsequent shot wide. Involved in a few theatrical incidents and booked in the second half for a petulant challenge. Seemed to be constantly looking for arguments. MOISES CAICEDO - 7 A typically tenacious performance in the middle of the park from Chelsea's reigning player of the year. Caicedo was effective in regaining possession and recycling the ball. 12 ROMEO LAVIA - 6 Played a few smart passes during a low-key first half. Was replaced by Enzo Fernandez at the break. 12 COLE PALMER - 6 Uncharacteristically blazed a shot wildly over the bar after being set up by Pedro Neto. Buzzed around and played a nice pass in the build-up to Fernandez's goal, but wasn't at his imperious best. PEDRO NETO - 8 Brilliantly cut inside before whacking a left-footed shot beyond Hugo Lloris to give Chelsea the lead. Put in a brilliant cross for Jackson on 54 minutes. Gorgeous through ball to set up Palmer, only for the England star to blaze over. NONI MADUEKE - 5 Forced a decent stop by Hugo Lloris on 17 minutes. Was often involved during the first half but little he tried came off. Subbed just after the hour mark having failed to make a big impact. NICOLAS JACKSON - 7 Played Madueke through with a brilliant pass. Later produced an even better ball to set up Neto's opener. Nearly scored with a second half header before being replaced by Liam Delap. SUBSTITUTES Enzo Fernandez (for Lavia, 46) - 7 Sealed Chelsea's win with a simple close-range finish. Malo Gusto (for James, 46) - 5 A pretty underwhelming cameo from Chelsea's backup right-back. Liam Delap (for Jackson, 64) - 7 Some brilliant bustling centre-forward play to bully his marker before nearly teeing up Fernandez. Lovely cross to set up the Argentine's goal. Tyrique George (for Madueke, 64) - 5 A few nifty touches but didn't really make much of an impact. Dario Essugo (for Caicedo, 84) - N/A Not enough time to show what he can do. Christopher Nkunku (for Palmer, 84) - N/A Forgotten man barely got a touch off the bench.

Edmonton Oilers consider huge lineup change before must-win Stanley Cup clash with Florida Panthers
With their season on the line on Tuesday evening, the Edmonton Oilers are faced with a problem that has no clear cut solution - knowing the wrong choice could result in a second-straight Stanley Cup Finals loss. All series long, goaltending has been a major issue for Edmonton - with Stuart Skinner struggling once again on the biggest stage and backup Calvin Pickard not looking much better. With a little more than 24 hours to go before Game 6 on Tuesday night, Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch did not reveal which netminder he'd be going with against the Florida Panthers. 'Ultimately, it's who we feel is in the best position to win us a game. It about who's looking really good at that moment, and then we make our decision,' Knoblauch said on Monday. Neither goaltender has played particularly well in this postseason - with both Pickard and Skinner owning sub-.895 save percentages for the playoffs overall. In this series particularly, Skinner has owned a horrendous .859 save percentage - drastically down from the .924 save percentage he had in the Western Conference Finals. His shoddy play got him benched twice in a 6-1 loss in Game 3 and a 5-4 overtime victory in Game 4. So, Pickard got the start in Game 5 - only to allow four goals on 18 shots in a 5-2 loss. In this Finals series, Pickard's .877 save percentage doesn't exactly scream 'must start'. Turning to scratches Olivier Rodrigue or Collin Delia is a non-starter at this point, so Knoblauch's decision isn't the clearest. However, he admits that the imbalance in workload - with Skinner seeing much more ice time in the past few games than Pickard - could be working against them. 'I'll give that some consideration. He got pulled, but I don't put any of that blame on him,' Knoblauch said. 'I think Stu, like our team, is very resilient. They play their best when their backs are against the wall. Whether it's Stu or Picks, I think they've been able to come up big at most important times.' Whichever netminder he goes with, Knoblauch's men have had a tendency to bounce back in these playoffs - owning a 6-1 record in the game after a loss, including a 2-0 record in these Finals. If the Oilers are able to pull this off on Tuesday, it sets up a Friday night Game 7 back in Edmonton to see if Canada can end its 31-year Cup-less drought.
