Ahmedabad Plane Crash: IMA writes to Tata Sons, seeks financial, necessary support for BJ Medical College students
NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Gujarat State Branch, has written to
Tata Sons
Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, appealing for financial assistance for medical students from BJ Medical College who were injured or killed in the Ahmedabad plane crash.
In a letter sent on Saturday, the association welcomed Air India's announcement of Rs 1 crore compensation for the families of deceased passengers and acknowledged Tata Sons' contribution to the renovation of the BJMC hostel. However, it called for similar support for the students who were present at the crash site.
"We humbly request you to consider extending financial assistance and necessary support to the medical students present at the crash site who were injured or lost their lives in this unfortunate event," the letter read.
The IMA noted that some students had sustained serious injuries, while others had died in the tragedy. It described them as "not just victims, but also future doctors who will serve our country's healthcare system".
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the association urged Tata Sons to announce support at the earliest, in line with what has been offered to the families of passengers.
The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon, when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. A total of 274 people were killed — 241 onboard and 33 on the ground.
