Cancer care in the city is considered among the best in the country, renowned for its precise surgical procedures, immunotherapy, targeted drugs, multidisciplinary tumor boards and clinical trials. For many, the city offers hope where once only despair ruled. But behind the shiny facades of these world-class medical institutions lies a dangerous and dark underbelly: a sprawling counterfeit drug network that has infiltrated the very supply chains that patients trust with their lives.
These are not mere cheap knock-offs; these are criminal deceptions that put patients at grave risk, especially those battling life-threatening illnesses like cancer..
The Crackdown
In June, the Delhi drugs control department executed a citywide operation that uncovered the depth of the problem. Over 160 samples of suspected cancer medications were seized—many lacked proper documentation or bore suspicious markings. This comes as a suo motu action after Delhi Police busted a well-organized racket allegedly responsible for selling fake and unauthorised cancer drugs to patients.
Within days, six individuals were arrested. The raids took place in Laxmi Nagar, Budh Vihar, and Chandni Chowk—areas selected for their proximity to major medical institutions such as AIIMS, Safdarjung, Lok Nayak, and Rajiv Gandhi hospitals.
The haul recovered from one raid included vials worth `2.15 crore, 519 empty vials labelled as Keytruda, Infinzi, Tecentriq, Perjeta, Opdyta, Darzalex; 864 empty packaging cartons; along with packets of counterfeit solutions.

Delhi police stations notified as designated places for video conference evidence
New Delhi: LG VK Saxena has given his approval to notify all police stations in the capital as "designated places" from where police officers can provide evidence to the court through video conference, Raj Niwas officials said on Tuesday. This, officials said, will ensure that police officers dealing with various cases do not have to travel and physically attend court proceedings, thereby saving a great amount of time and resources by deposing through video conference and enhancing their functioning. Earlier, the video conferencing facility for providing evidence was only available in the Delhi High Court, district courts, prisons, hospitals, the forensic science laboratory and some govt offices. "This major reform comes under the draft model rules (Nyaya Shruti) on video conferencing under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which recommended the inclusion of police stations as 'designated places' for deposition through video conference for police personnel and officers," said a Raj Niwas official. A proposal was thus prepared by the home department and sent to the LG for his approval. According to officials from the L-G Office, this marks a departure from the current requirement for officers — including investigating officers and those who are witnesses in criminal cases — to be physically present in court for providing evidence or deposition. Officers will no longer have to travel and physically attend court proceedings — saving a great amount of time and resources. Delhi: Dummy bomb exercise conducted at Paschim Vihar market
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) The Delhi Police on Tuesday carried out a 'dummy bomb' detection and disposal exercise at the National Market in Paschim Vihar West as part of heightened security arrangements ahead of Independence Day, an official said. According to the police, information was received at the Paschim Vihar West control room about the suspected planting of an explosive-like object at the market. 'A team immediately reached the spot, cordoned off the area and began a systematic search." The officer further said that a head constable spotted the suspicious object during the search. It was examined and later confirmed to be a dummy device placed for the security drill, the officer added. 'The exercise was aimed at testing the real-time preparedness of the local police and response teams in the event of a bomb threat. Such drills help in evaluating our operational readiness, coordination and response time," he added. Police said National Market, which attracts a high footfall, was chosen for the drill to ensure the exercise mirrored a real-world scenario. Market-goers were temporarily restricted from entering the area during the search operation, and the situation was normalised soon after the device was secured. Security in the Outer District has been intensified, ahead of the upcoming national celebrations on August 15.
