David Pollack Walks Back No. 2 Ranking After Spring Practice

Yahoo10-05-2025

Several college football analysts released their rankings for the upcoming season during the offseason. Some of these rankings include a top 25, while others are limited to a top 10.
Analyst David Pollack gave a top-five ranking before spring practices began, placing the Texas Longhorns, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Clemson Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions in his top five. He ranked the defending national champion Buckeyes at No. 2. However, in his post-spring practice rankings on his podcast, "See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack," he indicated that he would likely drop Ohio State from the No. 2 position.

Pollack explained that this decision was based on the significant loss of key players from the Buckeyes' roster, as they currently rank No. 101 in returning production, with only 46% of their production returning next season.

"Ohio State loses 14 guys to the draft," Pollack said. "And tons of guys that you are looking at, and they're still going to be some ballers. They're still going to be really, really good. I'll say this, I don't know if I would put Ohio State two. I can say that. I might move Ohio State down the list a little bit."
As Pollack noted, the Buckeyes have lost several key players this season. These include quarterback Will Howard, defensive ends Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau, defensive tackles Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton, and defensive backs Lathan Ransom, Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock.

Also not returning are linebacker Cody Simon, offensive tackles Donovan Jackson and Josh Fryar, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins and tight end Gee Scott Jr. Furthermore, offensive lineman Josh Simmons and Rimington Trophy winner Seth McLaughlin have also said goodbye.
Pollack concluded that this was the one area he would change in his pre-spring top five rankings. Although he did not specify how far down he would drop Ohio State, it seems likely that Oregon would become his new No. 2 team, as he mentioned he wouldn't alter the rest of the rankings.
The Buckeyes will have the opportunity to prove Pollack wrong about their ranking when they face Texas, Pollack's No. 1 team, on August 30 in Columbus, Ohio.

Guardians option ALCS home run hitter Jhonkensy Noel to Triple-A Columbus

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jhonkensy Noel, who hit a game-tying homer in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, was optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday. Noel batted only .146 with two homers and nine RBIs in 46 games after making the opening day roster for the first time. The right-handed hitter found himself on the short side of a platoon in right field, limiting him to 103 at-bats. 'It hasn't been the start to the season that he would have liked or that we would have liked,' manager Stephen Vogt said. 'We know how good of a player that he is, so we told Jhonkensy to just go play, go relax and go back to being you.' Nicknamed 'Big Christmas,' the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder belted a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the ninth inning of what became a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees in 10 innings last Oct. 17. Cleveland lost the ALCS in five games, but Noel's shot to left field was one of the more memorable moments at Progressive Field since the ballpark opened in 1994. 'We still hold true to the belief that Jhonkensy — the best version of him — helps us win games,' Vogt said. 'He plays an unbelievable right field, he's a good baserunner and he has the power to hit it out of the yard. It just hasn't been there yet this year.' Johnathan Rodriguez was recalled from Columbus and started in right field in the Guardians' three-game series finale against the Houston Astros. Cleveland also announced that outfielder Will Brennan and right-hander Andrew Walters will both undergo surgery Monday. Brennan has been sidelined with left elbow inflammation since May 22, while Walters experienced a right lat strain May 30 while pitching against Angels star Mike Trout. ___ AP MLB:

Cubs' Justin Steele Gets Into It on Social Media With Chicago Fans

Cubs' Justin Steele Gets Into It on Social Media With Chicago Fans originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele has not had the start to the Major League Baseball season that he wanted. In fact, his 2025 season ended on April 7, when he left a game because of an elbow injury. Steele had surgery to repair the flexor tendon and UCL in his left elbow and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. Advertisement But that has not prevented him from getting into a social media spat with a fan. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele (35) pitches during the first inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Gorski-Imagn Images Since he is not able to support the team with his on-field performance on the diamond, he instead made a social media post raving about how his team was performing. That post came with some backlash from another X user. "Is this Cubs team the best base running team baseball has ever seen?" Steele wrote on X. One Chicago fan took issue with the support Steele was giving his teammates. "Best base running team??? Fries in the bag bro," said user @GeorgeJenn1ngs. The pitcher swung back with a bit more of a personal insult, "George; with all due respect. Your X account is about as cool as your turtle neck. Here's your fries," Steele said. Advertisement Steele has been described in the past as "soft spoken" with an "aw-shucks personality" by writer Jordan Bastian, making the dispute a little bit surprising. Still, in a world where athletes are exposed to more criticism than ever because of social media, this exchange has become increasingly common. It is a long MLB season and things like this are going to happen.
