Czech police nab fake dentist with dozens of patients

CTV News2 days ago

Prague, Czech Republic -- A fake dentist and two assistants who treated dozens of patients after learning the trade on the internet have been charged in the Czech Republic, police said Wednesday.
The three family members opened a fully equipped dentist's without a licence or the necessary expertise in the central Czech town of Havlickuv Brod in 2023, police said.
A 22-year-old man posing as a dentist provided check-ups but also extracted teeth, gave root canal treatments and applied anesthesia, drawing on information obtained online.
A 50-year-old woman worked as a nurse, while a 44-year-old man providing the premises produced prosthetic devices for patients.
'The woman, who worked in the health sector, provided anesthetics but also other dental material to which she had access, such as fillings, cleaning powder, glue, impression material and much more,' police said in a statement.
Asked by AFP if some of the patients complained, local police spokeswoman Michaela Lebrova declined to comment.
The illegal clinic treated dozens of patients and raked in a total of four million Czech koruna (US$185,500), police said.
Police detained the trio earlier this month and charged them with doing illegal business, money laundering, attempted battery, drug dealing and theft.
All three had a clean criminal record. They have been provisionally released after pleading guilty, and face up to eight years in prison, police said.
Facing a shortage of dentists, the Czech parliament last year passed a bill facilitating the employment of dentists from countries outside the European Union, of which the Czech Republic is a member.

N.B. RCMP conducting search in connection with 2021 case of missing Bathurst teen

Police in New Brunswick are conducting a search as part of the ongoing investigation into the 2021 disappearance of a teenage girl from Bathurst, N.B. The RCMP says specialized police services and Acadie-Chaleur ground search and rescue will be in the Middle River area on Friday and Saturday as it continues to investigate the disappearance of Madison Roy-Boudreau. Police have previously said they are treating her disappearance as a homicide. Boudreau's father reported her missing the evening of May 11, 2021. He said he had last seen her around 7:30 that morning as she was heading off to school. Police confirmed Roy-Boudreau, who was 14 at the time, had gotten into a grey Ford Ranger pickup truck that morning. At the time, Bathurst Police Force Chief Stephane Roy said police had located the truck and immediately searched the residence and property where it was found. On May 13, 2021, Roy said officers arrested the driver of the truck and seized the vehicle. On the same day, tips led police to search several quarries off St. Anne Street in Bathurst. As part of the timeline, Roy said a 42-year-old man from nearby South Tetagouche, N.B., was brought before provincial court on May 14 and charged with failing to comply with the conditions of a court undertaking. Several New Brunswick police units have conducted multiple searches since Boudreau disappeared. Police said the searches led them to obtain additional evidence in the case. Bathurst police have faced repeated questions as to why they did not issue an Amber Alert after Boudreau was reported missing. Roy previously said the case did not meet all the criteria for an Amber Alert, which is issued in cases of child abductions, but he would not elaborate. First court appearance for senior London police officer facing assault charges

London Police Service Inspector Ryan Scrivens as seen in a video posted to social media on Dec. 14, 2024. (Source: London Police Service/Facebook) Charged with two counts of assault, the matter of London police Insp. Ryan Scrivens, 48, was dealt with in an Ottawa courtroom Friday morning via zoom. London lawyer Lucas O'Hara appeared for Scrivens telling the court that he has asked for information from the Crown on the case saying, 'I have requested disclosure but haven't received any.' O'Hara waived the reading of the charge in open court. A ban on publication is put in place on identifying the complainant in the case along with witnesses. Scrivens, a 25 year veteran, was charged after a reported incident in Ottawa on Family Day weekend in Februrary. The case was adjourned for about 12 weeks and will be back in court on Sept. 12. Scrivens has been suspended with pay and London police have launched an internal investigation looking into the matter.
