Sharjah to Host World Congress for Inclusion 2025 -- First Time in the Middle East and North African Region
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the 18th World Congress is one of the most influential global gatherings focused on advancing the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and their families - promoting inclusion around the world.
Organized by Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) in collaboration with Inclusion International, the Congress serves as a key forum for exchanging ideas, sharing success stories, and addressing the challenges facing individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of SCHS, commented. "We are proud that Sharjah is hosting this global event for the first time in the MENA region. Hosting the congress reflects the emirate's vision of building communities where people with intellectual disabilities have a real voice and influence in shaping policies and decisions."
Thought leaders, government officials, policy experts, and advocates from around the world are expected to contribute, making the congress a strategic platform for shaping actionable recommendations. 850 participants, professionals, and representatives of local, regional, and international organisations, family members and Self advocates from across five global regions are expected to attend this global event.
The three-day event will address critical topics, including inclusive education, community and family support, employment, humanitarian services, healthcare, deinstitutionalisation, legal decision-making, social protection, self-advocacy, and capacity building for organisations working in the disability sector.
Sue Swenson, President of Inclusion International, emphasized the Congress's global importance: "The World Congress is the most important gathering of our global movement. Self-advocates, families, and organizations lead the conversation about what inclusion means in real life, showing through their actions that we are inclusion."

Colombia presidential hopeful dies after June rally shooting
BOGOTA, Colombia (AFP) -- Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe has died two months after being shot at a campaign rally, his family said Monday, as the attack rekindled fears of a return to the nation's violent past. The 39-year-old conservative senator, a grandson of former President Julio Cesar Turbay (1978-1982), was shot in the head and leg on June 7 at a rally in the capital Bogota by a suspected 15-year-old hitman. Despite signs of progress in recent weeks, his doctors on Saturday announced he had suffered a new brain hemorrhage. "Rest in peace, love of my life," his widow Maria Claudia Tarazona wrote Monday morning in a post on Instagram. "Thank you for a life full of love." She attended the state ceremony at Congress in Bogota, where Uribe's body will remain for public viewing until Wednesday. Authorities have arrested six suspects linked to the attack, including the alleged shooter, who was captured at the scene by Uribe's bodyguards. Following a nationwide manhunt, police announced the arrest of an alleged mastermind behind the attack, Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, alias "El Costeno." Police have also pointed to a dissident wing of the defunct FARC guerrilla group as being behind the assassination. The attack on Uribe, a leading candidate ahead of the 2026 presidential election, has reopened old wounds in a country wracked by violence. His own mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in a botched 1991 police operation to free her from cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel. Four presidential candidates were assassinated during the worst phase of violence in the 1980s and 1990s under Escobar, who terrorized citizens of Bogota, Medellin and elsewhere with a campaign of bombings. Writing on X, left-wing President Gustavo Petro, of whom Uribe was a fierce critic, said the government's role was to "repudiate crime ... regardless of ideology" and assured the safety of Colombians was his top priority. "Today is a sad day for the country," Vice President Francia Marquez said on social media. "Violence cannot continue to mark our destiny. Democracy is not built with bullets or blood, it is built with respect, with dialogue." Uribe had fiercely criticized Petro's strategy of "total peace," based on engaging all of Colombia's remaining armed groups, including drug traffickers, in dialogue. He announced in October he would seek to succeed the term-limited Petro in the May 2026 election. Uribe was elected to Bogota's city council at age 26, later becoming its youngest-ever chairperson and then the mayor's right-hand man. In 2019, he unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Bogota, but three years later, he was elected a senator -- receiving the most votes of any candidate in the country. He took a seat with the conservative Democratic Center party, founded by former President Alvaro Uribe, no relation. "Evil destroys everything, they killed hope. May Miguel's struggle be a light that illuminates Colombia's rightful path," former President Uribe wrote on X. In recent months Petro, a former left-wing guerrilla, has been accused of dialing up the political temperature by labeling his right-wing opponents "Nazis." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a frequent critic of the leftist Petro government, demanded justice following the announcement of Uribe's death. "The US stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, both in mourning and demanding justice for those responsible," Rubio said. Trump threatens takeover of Washington to fight crime
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested he may use the National Guard to police the streets of Washington in his latest threat to take over running the city that serves as the seat of the US government. "We have a capital that's very unsafe," Trump told reporters at the White House. "We have to run DC. This has to be the best-run place in the country." Trump, who has threatened a federal takeover of the city multiple times, renewed those threats after a young staffer who was part of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency was assaulted over the weekend. Musk , the billionaire former adviser to Trump who once spearheaded the DOGE effort, said the man was beaten and received a concussion. "It is time to federalize DC," he wrote. Asked if he was considering taking over the Washington police, Trump responded affirmatively. "We just almost lost a young man, beautiful handsome guy that got the hell knocked out of him," Trump said. The president posted a picture of the victim, Edward Coristine, known by the nickname "Big Balls," on social media, with blood on his face, arms, torso and legs. "We're going to beautify the city. We're going to make it beautiful. And what a shame, the rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else. We're not going to let it. And that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly, too," Trump said. A spokesperson for Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser declined to comment. Violent crime in the first seven months of 2025 was down by 26 percent in Washington compared to last year while overall crime was down about 7 percent, according to records on the police department's website. Overall crime was down 15 percent in 2024, compared to 2023, the website showed. The District of Columbia was established in 1790 with land from neighboring Virginia and Maryland. Congress has control of its budget, but resident voters elect a mayor and city council, thanks to a law known as the Home Rule Act. For Trump to take over the city, Congress likely would have to pass a law revoking that act, which Trump would have to sign. The president said on Wednesday that lawyers were already looking at overturning the Home Rule Act.

India accuses EU, US of double standard over Russian trade
NEW DELHI -- India has sharply criticised the United States and the European Union, saying it is being unfairly singled out by them over its Russian oil purchases when they both trade extensively with Moscow despite the war in Ukraine. India's criticism followed a renewed threat by US. President Donald Trump on Monday to raise tariffs on goods from India over its Russian oil purchases, deepening the trade rift between the two countries. In a rare show of unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party and the main opposition Congress on Tuesday condemned Trump's repeated criticism of New Delhi. India's Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued late on Monday that "it is revealing that the very nations criticising India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia". "It is unjustified to single out India," the ministry said. It said the EU conducted 67.5 billion euros ($78.02 billion) in trade with Russia in 2024, including record imports of liquefied natural gas reaching 16.5 million metric tons. The US, the statement said, continues to import Russian uranium hexafluoride for use in its nuclear power industry, palladium, fertilisers and chemicals. It did not give a source for the export information. The US embassy and the EU's delegation in New Delhi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Both the United States and EU have sharply scaled back their trade ties with Russia since it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In 2021, Russia was the EU's fifth-largest trading partner, with goods exchange worth 258 billion euros, according to the EU executive European Commission. Sudden rift The sudden rift between India and the US has been deepening since July 31, when Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods being shipped to the USand for the first time threatened unspecified penalties for buying Russian oil. India is one of the biggest buyers of crude from Russia, importing about 1.75 million barrels per day from January to June this year, up 1 percent from a year ago. India's equity benchmarks fell after Trump's renewed threat of harsh tariffs on goods from India. Manish Tewari, a member of parliament and Congress leader, said Trump's "disparaging remarks hurt the dignity and self-respect of Indians". "The time has come to call out this constant bullying and hectoring," he added.
