In the last five years, an enigmatic rock band named Sleep Token has bent metal to its will. Emerging from the pandemic shadows of 2020, the masked group quickly established itself as an amorphous entity, syncing guttural screams with pop melodies, hip-hop drums and reggaetón grooves to the growing curiosity of the masses. Sleep Token's disruption is perfectly captured in a viral reaction video from Slaughter to Prevail's Alex Terrible, who rolled his eyes at its lead singer Vessel during a listen of 2023's 'The Summoning.'
'Who the f—k is this guy?' the Russian frontman tells the camera after pausing the song, before summarizing his reaction to the song in imperfect English: 'I very like vocals, it sounds beautiful and gay, but it's okay. It's just not my cup of tea. I don't like clean vocals in heavy music.'
But after he resumes play on the song, 'The Summoning' mutates into an explosive drop, with Vessel erupting a death metal gurgle over the band's hammering guitars. Terrible smirks at the camera. 'Okay,' he concedes.
While any sort of genre hopping usually makes metal heads recoil, Sleep Token has accrued its own gravitational pull, collecting fans who both worship heavy giants like Knocked Loose and Lorna Shore but know how to catch a vibe to Bad Bunny and Drake. Still, those same fans grew weary after RCA announced last year it was adding Vessel and co. to their roster: Major labels and their machines have historically been known as a 'clean-up-on-aisle-three' death notice for metal bands, taking their grungy scraps and turning them into slick full-course meals.
All of this means Sleep Token's Even in Arcadia will be the biggest and most divisive album of their career. The end result? A whole lot of genre mashing, full-blown pop songs, and a few sick metal riffs for good measure. Regardless of whether the project makes you wanna rage or roll your eyes, it's clear Vessel isn't through conquering the rock world.

While Sleep Token's use of trap and dubstep here is admirable, 'Dangerous' just doesn't rattle my insides the same way other songs do. Even in Arcadia is filled with moments that are truly suffocating, where the guitars are so heavy, and the screams are so dense, that it envelopes everything around me. When that's the bar, a dubby bass hit just packs less of a punch. 'Dangerous' at times feels crowded, with Vessel's voice drowned out by the mash of guitars and beats and backing vocals that perforate the song.
'Past Self' is undeniably the most divisive song on this record, and will likely thrill radio but disgust Vessel's longtime supporters. While 'Past Self' works on its face as a groovy pop track, the issue is that it feels incredibly boilerplate for a Sleep Token song: The band has always known how to fill its space, utilizing multiple genres into lengthy anthems that toss the listener around like a rag doll ('Take Me Back to Eden,' 'Ascensionism'). In that respect, 'Past Self' feels predictable, underwhelming and worst of all, calculated. This song feels designed to conquer TikTok and the charts, and critical metalheads will no doubt weaponize it to troll Sleep Token fans moving forward.
'Provider' feels almost like it was ghost-written by Usher. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as Vessel coos with the lustful urgency of any R&B veteran — but the issue is that Vessel and Sleep Token have established themselves as otherworldly entities. The band was born out of their worship for 'an ancient deity crudely dubbed, 'Sleep,' since no modern tongue can properly express its name.' Fans have clocked in numerous hours dissecting Vessel's lyrics, piecing them together from project to project in hopes of further understanding this complex lore.
So when Vessel cries out: 'I wanna do more than just bend the rules/ 'Cause you been hittin' my phone so hard,' it feels weird to picture the singer — clad in black body paint, shimmering armor, a sword and his white bedazzled mask — doing something as mortal as answering a late-night booty call.
'Even in Arcadia' is spellbinding. Guided by nothing more than a piano and Vessel's voice, the song serves as both a nice break from the upbeat anthems that came before it, and a haunting call to arms for Sleep Token's longtime supporters, thanking them for taking this strange journey into the mainstream eye with them. 'No matter how we feel/ We've got a taste for one another and a few good years to kill,' Vessel sings. 'No matter what is real/ It seems that even in Arcadia you walk beside me still.'
Simply put, 'Damocles' is Sleep Token's 'These Are The Days of Our Lives.' Unapologetic and honest, the band ruminates on their relationship to fame and success, acknowledging that while it's knocking at their front door, it doesn't feel the way they thought. 'What if I can't get up and stand tall?/ What if the diamond days are all gone?' Vessel cries.
At this point in the album, Vessel seems to also reassure his fans that he knows Even in Arcadia sounds partially constructed and mainstream. 'I know these chords are boring/ But I can't always be killing the game,' he sings. The end result is a song that helps us see the man behind the mask, and humbles us with a reminder that these are just songwriters, looking to make music that feels authentic to them. Who are we to judge how it sounds?
The lead single off Even in Arcadia encompasses everything great about a Sleep Token song: There's some pianos, some thumping 808s, a huge metal drop, some soaring melodies. It's great, and caters to both newcomers and die-hard Sleep Token devotee'. 'Emergence' goes hard, next question.
As shown by 'Blood Sport,' 'Missing Limbs' and of course the beloved 'Euclid,' Sleep Token always knows how to end an album. 'Infinite Baths' begins its ascension almost immediately, with Vessel's song writing and voice sweeping up to the heavens. Then, out of nowhere, the track nose dives into the gutter, shifting into Sleep Token's most punishing track ever made. Vessel snarls and growls, screaming his way to the finish line with such intensity I thought Will Ramos of Lorna Shore had stepped into the fold. This is a fantastic album-capper that reassures the band's longtime fans it still knows how to rock out.
Never have I heard Sleep Token's vibe so perfectly encapsulated then with the lyric: 'Right foot on the roses/ Left foot on the landmine.' The reggaetón-inflected groove of 'Caramel' shouldn't work, and Vessel's shift from sing-rapping to snarling screams shouldn't work — but my god does it sound good. This is one the bands wildest songs, and effectively shows just how many sounds they can master unapologetically. If there's one song that will expose metal to its largest audience in decades, it will be this one.
'Look to Windward,' named in reference to T.S. Elliot's 1922 poem 'The Waste Land', which explores the laws of unintended consequences, is a transmuting whirl of an opener. Stuffed with dial-tone synths, trap drums, strings, piano chords, and suffocating guitars, the song thrashes about like ocean waves in a thunderstorm. It's a harrowing first impression that pushes back against any expectations one might have when entering Vessel's world. 'Look to Windward' is an almost-eight-minute reminder to fasten our seatbelts and stow our tray tables.
'Gethsemane' is one of the best Sleep Token songs ever made. Merging folk, funk, hip-hop and punishing metal, the end result is completely arresting. The band's superpower has always been convincing its listeners that a song is over before barreling into a second and sometimes third act. 'Gethsemane' masters that formula, swirling between genres like a strong breeze all before climaxing with trunk rattling bass and Vessel spitting some serious bars. 'And this throne didn't come with a gun, so I've got a different energy,' he raps. 'Gethsemane' is Sleep Token asserting its dominance as one of metal's most bizarre bands, adding further intrigue and existential depth to an already-fascinating group.

BTS Unveils Plans for 2025 Festa Celebration in South Korea

BTS has shared new details about its upcoming 2025 FESTA, marking the K-pop group's 12th anniversary. This year's offline celebration is set for June 13–14 at KINTEX Exhibition Center 2 in Goyang, South Korea. The event will be open to the public and feature interactive activities, including a FESTA-themed game zone, DIY photo card stations, and a coloring wall inspired by BTS' album artwork. In conjunction with the in-person festivities, a lineup of online content — such as the annual 'BTS LIVE' and the family portrait — will be released. Exclusive merchandise will also be available. It remains unclear whether any BTS members will appear or perform at this year's FESTA. Billboard has reached out to the group's representatives for comment. At the 2024 FESTA, Jin made his first public appearance after completing his mandatory military service, personally greeting 1,000 fans with hugs. He also performed solo tracks 'The Astronaut' and 'Super Tuna,' along with BTS' 'Moon.' While none of the other BTS members were able to attend last year's FESTA, each wrote heartfelt letters to ARMY that were shared during the event. BTS made its Billboard chart debut in 2013, when 'No More Dream' entered at No. 14 on the World Digital Song Sales chart, eventually climbing to No. 2 seven years later. Since then, the group has shattered multiple records, including the most No. 1 debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 and the most top 10 debuts among groups. Hudson Westbrook Is Determined to Outgrow His Viral Country Hit

'You see a really quick rise, and a lot of people don't see that you came from nothing to a hundred real quick,' Hudson Westbrook says. He's speaking from experience. A little more than a year ago, Westbrook was just another student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, working cattle in his downtime. He'd dabbled in music since he was a teenager in Stephenville, the town heavy on cowboys and rodeo west of Fort Worth where he was raised, and he'd been experimenting with songwriting for roughly a year. One viral hit in the summer of 2024, followed by a Billboard Top 30 country and Hot 100 single last fall, and Westbrook is on the cusp of bona fide country music stardom. But, at only 20, he's doing all he can to keep his career blow-up in perspective on the album. 'I took all my songs from last year,' Westbrook tells Rolling Stone, 'and I went, 'Hey, these are songs about where I am at right now.' I want this record to be where Hudson is at this point in time. That's the best way to describe an album — a point in time.' He is banking on that point in time being enough to parlay his demographic of college-aged country fans into a sustained fanbase. At a time when the artists experiencing similar rises are either teenagers — Ty Myers, Bayker Blankenship, and Maddox Batson — or in their post-college 20s — Zach Top, Wyatt Flores, and Dylan Gossett — Westbrook has managed to pull the best of both worlds into his orbit. His support shows in May at the youth-skewed Calf Fry Festival in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and the older-focused Lone Star Smokeout in Arlington, Texas, were among the best-attended sets of each festival. He's also banking on learning the ropes of both performing and fame as he goes. 'The first time I stood onstage, my legs were shaking,' Westbrook says. 'I was nervous as hell. But the more that I do it, and the more that I am myself, the more people are gonna love all this. At the same time, I've also learned that it's not mentally stable for me to sit here and try to please other people. So, I do my best to try to be myself as much as possible onstage and through my songs. 'But, now, if you go to the grocery store, and Hudson bumps into your cart and doesn't say 'excuse me' or says 'screw you' or something worse, and someone takes a video of it — you're done. That's the part that's not fun.' Being from Texas, Westbrook sports a powerful roster of musical influences to help him manage. 'The main reason I love music, really, was Cross Canadian Ragweed. And I listened to Parker [McCollum]. I listened to Koe [Wetzel]. Stoney LaRue, Randy Rogers — all those dudes. I was breaking cattle in college, but going all the way back to when I was a little kid, I just had a bone in my body meant for music. I didn't say anything about it, and I never really told my mom that I wanted to learn guitar, but they knew I loved listening to music. So, when I got my Parker on or my Koe on or my Ragweed '17' on, don't talk to me.' McCollum ended up being more than an influence. The viral song that started it all for Westbrook was 'Take It Slow,' which he put out on social media in May 2024. Nearly immediately, the comment sections were filled with comparisons to McCollum. This is mostly because the two lanky, blond Texans could be dead ringers for one another. 'Even though I listened to these influences, I found that my sound, naturally, has veered so far away from them,' he says. 'People compare me to Parker, and I get it, because I have blond hair and blue eyes, and you want to connect something to it, but it's also not how I sound.' This is evident on Texas Forever, where Westbrook's natural baritone is delivered with a twang that echoes George Strait much more than it does the range of McCollum. The album's 17 tracks are all written or co-written by Westbrook, including a fresh version of his Top 40 country radio single, 'House Again,' which has already been certified gold since its release last fall. The songwriting is straightforward, often incorporating Gen-Z slang prominently. 'On this album, there's a cool trend that's been going on,' he says. 'We've used titles that are everyday sayings, like 'Funny Seeing You Here' or 'Good Taste in Whiskey' — things that people always say that you might think are clever or whatever. So, I took my age and my demographic's slang — and just natural sayings — and used them for song titles. That's the stuff I've related to. 'I've been living rent-free in your head' is a song title, to me. 'I love a good melody and a catchy melody. I hate writing from the hook. I hate having to get that first and then going through the rest of the song. I'd rather let the song go where it wants to go. 'House Again' was written in an hour. 'Five to Nine' was written in 12 hours.' Notably absent from the project is 'Take It Slow' — a bold move given the recognition that song has with Westbrook's fans. It's by design. Westbrook appreciates the song for launching his career, but it's already been overtaken by 'House Again' as the must-play song at his concerts. He feels he's put better music out in the world, and plans to continue that trend. 'That was such a weird time for me, because so many things had to line up and go perfectly,' Westbrook says of his viral hit. 'I met a guy at Guitar Center, and he knew bass, and knew a drummer. The drummer knew a lead player. We all got together, and we went into the studio and recorded 'Take It Slow.' My fiddle player, Silas Clark, took a video of it, and I posted it. I woke up one day to ten million views. But I didn't know or care about a viral moment. As a new artist, I didn't know what good was or what bad was.' Pat Fielder, however, knows good or bad like the back of his hand. Based out of Lawrence, Kansas, Fielder is a senior buyer for Mammoth Live — one of the last major independent promotion companies left in the United States. In the wake of 'Take It Slow,' Fielder immediately put together a series of shows for Westbrook at small to mid-sized clubs across the Midwest last fall and winter. Nearly as quickly, Fielder and his colleagues found they had underestimated Westbrook's draw: The shows sold out. 'We put tickets on sale, and after a few days it became obvious that we needed to decide if we were going to let these shows be sellouts or move them into larger venues due to the demand,' Fielder tells Rolling Stone. 'We ended up doing a little bit of both. I'm not sure that my bosses believed me that he could sell out the larger venues at first, but that only lasted for a day or two.' One of the shows Fielder and Mammoth originally booked for Westbrook was at the 900-capacity Granada Theater in Lawrence, Kansas, set for early February. After selling out in the presale, the show got moved to the 2,400-capacity Uptown Theater in Kansas City — which also sold out. Westbrook took the stage at that show in a Kansas City Chiefs jersey with 'Sold Out' stitched across the back, and he had another viral moment for covering the Chiefs' best-known fan, Taylor Swift, during the set. In hindsight, Fielder says he may have stumbled upon the most concise explanation for Westbrook's appeal. 'My wife and I had her niece, a senior in college at the time, over for dinner,' he recalls. 'She said, 'All my friends who used to make fun of me for listening to country music are obsessed with Hudson Westbrook now.'' That may be a lot of brand-new pressure on Westbrook, but he plans to handle it by putting himself in front of as many people as possible. He'll make his CMA Fest debut this week before launching a full-fledged summer tour on June 7, a tour that includes major Texas shows at Whitewater Amphitheater in New Braunfels and Cook's Garage in Lubbock. He also has a run as McCollum's opener slated for July, for anyone looking to compare the two up close. In fact, that's where Westbrook will be when Texas Forever is released. If he gets his way, he'll be in McCollum's shoes a year from now. 'I want to tour the hell out of it,' Westbrook says of Texas Forever. 'The goal is to play stadiums and headline festivals. Keep working my way up, keep getting better — and stay the same person I was the year before.'
