Nike to Launch New Women's Fitness Brand with Kim Kardashian's Skims

Asharq Al-Awsat18-02-2025

Nike will launch a new women's activewear brand in the US this spring in partnership with Kim Kardashian-owned shapewear clothing company Skims, as CEO Elliott Hill works to bolster its portfolio to better compete with upstart brands.
Product innovation and a return to focus on its core sports roots have been at the forefront of Hill's mission to revive sales at Nike, which have been lagging strong growth at Hoka and New Balance, Reuters reported.
The company's bid to appeal to women, who made up about 40% of its customers in 2023, was evident in Nike's first Super Bowl ad in nearly three decades, featuring star women athletes including Jordan Chiles, Caitlin Clark, Sha'Carri Richardson, A'ja Wilson and Sabrina Ionescu.
Skims was launched in 2019 and is valued at around $4 billion. It has seen a strong demand for its shapewear.
Nike said on Tuesday the new brand, called NikeSKIMS, would include training apparel, footwear and accessories for women.
The first collection will be launched at some retail locations in the US as well as at NikeSKIMS' website. The brand would launch globally in 2026, expanding into more retail locations, as well as in the wholesale segment.
The brand would sit alongside other names under Nike's kitty, including Converse, Jordan, ACG and Nike SB.
Nike's shares were up 3% on Tuesday.

Lululemon Shares Tumble as Yogawear Firm Warns Tariffs Will Crimp Profit

Lululemon Athletica's shares fell 21% in premarket trading on Friday, as the maker of high-end leggings warned that tariff-related costs and uneven demand in key markets of North America and China will dent its profits this year. The Canadian firm, whose Align yoga pants sell for $128 apiece on its website, will raise prices "modestly" for a "small portion of the assortment" and ramp up discounts for the rest of the year, company executives said. Lululemon has struggled to retain shoppers, despite its efforts to introduce new styles of sports bras and athletic jackets, as it faces intense competition from trendier and more affordable brands in North America and mainland China. "Despite (Americas) decline, management continues to prioritize product newness and China expansion over addressing a pullback from core customers and evident traffic declines," Jefferies analyst Randal Konik said in a note. "We believe this misalignment is concerning." Lululemon joins sportswear rivals Nike and On in raising prices in the US as erratic trade tactics under President Donald Trump rattle global markets and fuel fears of a recession. Lululemon trimmed its 2025 earnings forecast and said it expects margins to come under pressure from the proposed tariffs, which will impact products from some of its largest sourcing hubs in Vietnam, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. "My sense is that in the US, consumers remain cautious right now, and they are being very intentional about their buying decisions," CEO Calvin McDonald said on a post-earnings call. The company's stock, which is down about 14% this year, was trading at $261.90 before the bell on Friday. The news dragged Nike's shares down 1.4%. Lululemon's forward price-to-earnings multiple, a common benchmark for valuing stocks, is 21.46, compared to that of 31.37 for Nike and 9.54 for Gap.

How to pre-register for VALORANT Mobile

The ES TIMES — The highly anticipated VALORANT Mobile game is finally nearing launch, and players in select regions can now pre-register for early access. Pre-registration not only keeps you up to date with the latest official updates, but it also increases your chances of being among the first to experience Riot Games' tactical shooter on mobile. Regional Launch and Early Access As with many major mobile game launches, VALORANT Mobile will follow a regional launch strategy. This means that certain regions, starting with China, will receive access first. The first phase of testing has already begun in China, with Tencent-owned Lightspeed Studios handling development there. How to Pre-Register Currently, pre-registration is only available through the official VALORANT Mobile website for China. Players selected for early access will receive an email with download instructions and additional information. For other regions, Riot Games is expected to launch pre-registration via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in the near future. Although these pages are not yet live, players are advised to follow local stores or Riot's official channels for any updates. Technically, it is possible to access the Chinese version using a VPN or alternative methods, but this is not recommended. Server issues and high ping can lead to a frustrating experience, and the language barrier can hinder understanding important instructions or using some in-game features. Global Release and Rewards After the testing phase in China concludes, access is expected to expand to other regions. As we've become accustomed to Riot Games, pre-registration rewards will be offered, but unlocking them may require completing in-game tasks or reaching certain milestones during the testing periods. As the full release date approaches, players can expect to see the addition of new challenges, missions, and an in-game store filled with exclusive cosmetics and content designed specifically for the mobile platform.

Tesla is 'not interested' in producing cars in India, says minister

KOCHI — Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is "not interested in manufacturing in India", the country's heavy industries minister has said. The remarks were made on Monday as the Indian government issued detailed guidelines for a scheme to promote EV manufacturing in the country. This is the first time that India has publicly admitted that it has not been able to lure investment dollars from Musk, even after unveiling incentives for global EV giants last March. Minister HD Kumaraswamy confirmed that Tesla would open two showrooms in India and have a retail presence. "Mercedes Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia have shown interest [in manufacturing electric cars in India]. Tesla - we are not expecting from them," Kumaraswamy said. Another official told the Press Trust of India news agency that a Tesla representative had participated in the first round of stakeholder discussions for the manufacturing scheme but "was not part of the second and third round".The comments come on the back of US President Donald Trump saying in February that it would be "unfair" for the US if Tesla built a factory in the years Tesla has had several rounds of negotiations to enter company's original plans to open a base were shelved in 2022 after the Indian government insisted that Tesla make cars locally. The carmaker had said it wanted to export to India first so that it could test 2023, Musk said he was "trying to figure out the right timing" to invest in the Indian met Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year in Washington DC where the two discussed the "immense potential" for collaboration in technology and year India cut import taxes on EVs for global carmakers which committed to investing $500m (£369m) and starting local production within three years. This came after Musk complained that high import duties were preventing the carmaker from entering analysts say the Indian EV market may not be mature enough yet for Tesla to invest locally - EV sales still make up less than 3% of overall passenger vehicle sales in India, and locally made alternatives can cost half of what consumers will have to shell out for Tesla's base infrastructure and local road conditions could be further Tata Motors currently leads India's EV market with over 60% market share. MG Motors - jointly owned by India's JSW and a Chinese firm - is second at 22%.Globally, Tesla has been facing growing competition from Chinese players such as sales plummeted to their lowest level in three years in the first three months of 2025 after a backlash against Musk and his role in the Trump announced his departure from his government role last week. — BBC
