TORONTO – Michael Busch and Matt Shaw hit solo homers and Chicago starter Cade Horton was dominant as the Cubs defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 on Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.
Toronto starter Kevin Gausman gave up Busch's 23rd homer of the year in the third inning. Shaw followed two innings later with his 10th of the season.
Horton (7-3), one of the top rookies in the National League this season, held the Blue Jays (70-51) without a hit until Andres Gimenez singled with one out in the sixth inning.
The right-hander retired the first 10 Blue Jays in order before walking Bo Bichette in the fourth.
Horton was pulled after issuing a two-out walk to Bichette in the sixth. Reliever Andrew Kittredge gave up an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before retiring Addison Barger on a flyout.

Chicago catcher Miguel Amaya was taken off the field on a cart in the eighth inning. He appeared to injure his left leg as he lunged for first base while beating out an infield single.

The Cubs (68-51) tacked on two insurance runs later in the frame. Daniel Palencia worked a clean ninth inning for his 16th save.
Gausman (8-9) allowed three hits and two earned runs over seven innings. He had three strikeouts and one walk.
Chicago outhit Toronto 6-2. A sellout crowd of 43,120 took in the game, which took two hours 27 minutes to play.

Shortstop JoJo Parker said he's settling in nicely at the Blue Jays' player development complex after being selected by Toronto with the eighth overall pick in the MLB Draft last month.
'I've never had a hitting coach. I've never had a fielding coach,' Parker said on a video call. 'So I'm really excited to get involved with the coaches here.'
The 19-year-old Mississippi high schooler was MLB Pipeline's ninth-ranked prospect in the 2025 draft class.

Castillo's game-winning field goal lifts Bombers after late surge from Redblacks
Sergio Castillo made up for an earlier miss in a big way when he booted a 47-yard field as time expired to lift the Blue Bombers to a 30-27 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday. The Redblacks were down 27-10 just 21 seconds into the fourth quarter when they began their comeback. Lewis Ward was good on a 46-yard field goal at 4:39, Justin Hardy caught an eight-yard touchdown pass eight minutes later and then receiver Kalil Pimpleton had the 10th consecutive sold-out crowd at Princess Auto Stadium groaning. After Castillo went wide on a 57-yard field-attempt, Pimpleton returned the ball 117 yards for the touchdown with 53 seconds remaining to make it 27-27. Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros was intercepted on the team's next possession, but Ottawa couldn't do anything with its turn. Rangers head to Toronto looking to spark season

The Rangers have lost six of their last seven games to leave them at .500 and 3 1/2 games removed from an American League wild-card spot. They had Thursday off after a 6-4 loss at home to the Arizona Diamondbacks -- a game the Rangers led 4-2 with two outs and none on in the ninth inning. James McCann hit a solo homer and three batters later Ketel Marte hit a three-run blast to give Arizona the rubber match of a three-game series and a 3-6 homestand for Texas. 'It's obviously not where we wanted to end this homestand,' said first baseman Jake Burger, who hit a two-run homer on Wednesday. 'For us it is having that sense of urgency to realize where we are in the standings and the race. It's go time for us.' The Rangers have had offensive problems for much of the season. 'It has to come from within,' Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. 'We have to find a way and keep things moving.' The Rangers dropped two of the three at home to the Blue Jays on May 26-28. Pitching dominated the series with Toronto outscoring Texas 4-3 over the three games. The Rangers are on the road for the next seven games. They will need to improve on their 24-35 road record to keep a playoff spot within sight. 'There's baseball left,' Bochy said. 'We've got to win games. We've got to win on the road.' The Blue Jays are 2-1 halfway through their six-game homestand after defeating the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Thursday. They continued their success at home where they are 40-20 as opposed to 31-31 on the road. Playing at home has helped Toronto's scheduled starter for Friday, Chris Bassitt (11-6, 4.17 ERA). The right-hander is 8-0 with a 2.56 ERA in 13 starts at home this season. He is 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA in 16 career games (12 starts) against the Rangers. Texas right-hander Jacob deGrom (10-5, 2.86) will face the Blue Jays for the second time this season. He took the loss on May 26 when he allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings. In two career starts against Toronto, he is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA. He has lost each of his last three starts overall, going 0-3 and sporting a 6.88 ERA. The Blue Jays could have George Springer (concussion) back in the lineup at some time during the series. 'He's been right in the middle of everything this year,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. 'Not just with his performance, but with what we are doing on the bases and with what the dugout feels like. Things like that.' Springer was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk as designated hitter for Triple-A Buffalo to start his rehabilitation assignment on Thursday. He said he is not sure what the next step will be. 'We're going to see what they say,' Springer said. 'I'm just going to do what I'm told. I understand that there's a plan and a process that has to be followed.' In winning the rubber match from the Cubs on Thursday, Max Scherzer allowed one run in seven-plus innings and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run home run in the seventh. 'I just kept telling myself we're not going to lose this game 1-0,' Scherzer said. 'I'm not losing this game on the solo shot. Somebody's going to come through for us. Before series with Brewers, Cubs host lowly Pirates
(Photo credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images) The Chicago Cubs return home Friday for a pivotal week-long, eight-game homestand that includes a series with the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers. Before the National League Central leaders pay a visit, however, the Cubs will host the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs on Thursday completed a 2-4 road trip against the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays, ending with a 2-1 loss in Toronto on Thursday when a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. two-run home run in the seventh erased the Cubs' lead. Colin Rea (9-5, 4.09 ERA) hopes to carry over his strong outing from last Saturday as he takes the mound for the Cubs in the Friday afternoon series opener. The right-hander allowed one run over six innings in a 9-1 victory at St. Louis. He gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six in the only game Chicago won in that series. The 35-year-old journeyman sports a 3-3 record and a 5.49 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) against Pittsburgh. However, he has fared better of late. In two starts against Pittsburgh earlier this season, Rea held the Pirates to just two runs on four hits over six innings in each game. He earned the win in an 8-3 victory on May 1 but garnered a no-decision six weeks later as the Cubs won 3-2 in 10 innings. The Cubs have lost six of their last nine games primarily due to the team's struggles at the plate. They have scored just seven runs and managed only 32 hits in those defeats. Four of those hits were homers, including one by Michael Busch in Thursday's loss. 'We had a bunch of warning-track balls, but just couldn't get an inning going, really at all,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said after Thursday's loss. Pittsburgh comes to Chicago having lost five straight. That includes being swept by the Brewers in Milwaukee in three games earlier this week by a combined score of 33-6. The offense did show signs of breaking out in Wednesday's 12-5 loss, however. Five players had multiple hits as part of the team's 12-hit attack. The Pirates managed only seven during the first two games. Designated hitter Bryan Reynolds blasted a pair of homers and drove in all five runs as part of a 3-for-4 performance on Wednesday. Pirates interim manager Don Kelly said after Wednesday's defeat that he appreciated the effort from his batters. 'We continue to battle, continue to have good at-bats -- even there into the ninth inning, we had good at-bats,' he said. 'We need to carry that over to Chicago. It's going to be a tough series there, but I'm looking forward to playing at Wrigley.' No official starter has been named by the Pirates though multiple outlets indicated Braxton Ashcraft (3-2, 3.19) would make his third start this season. The rookie, 25, started Saturday in a 2-1 home loss to Cincinnati. His 3 1/3 innings were a season high. He gave up a run on three hits and a walk while striking out five. Ashcraft did pitch in Wrigley Field when the Pirates last visited two months ago. He threw two perfect innings in a 2-1 loss on June 14. He did not get a decision in the game. Chicago has won five of the first seven games in the season series. After this weekend, the Cubs will play the Pirates three more times a month from now at Pittsburgh.
