India, Pakistani Generals Trade Warnings At Shangri-La Dialogue As Tensions Linger

India and Pakistan's top military leaders traded pointed warnings at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, escalating regional tensions to the forefront of one of Asia's most prominent defence summits.
India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan and Pakistan's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza delivered starkly contrasting messages during simultaneous sessions at the high-profile forum, which drew defence leaders from across the world.
General Chauhan said India has redrawn its 'red line" on terrorism with its recent cross-border military action, Operation Sindoor. 'What India has done, politically, is draw a new red line of intolerance against terror," he said, referring to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists were killed. India has blamed Pakistan-based terror groups for the assault, a charge Islamabad denies.
'This operation lies in the military domain and should offer lessons to our adversary. We have been subjected to this proxy war of terror for more than two decades. We've lost too many lives, and we want to put an end to it," Chauhan added.
In a parallel session, General Mirza cautioned that prolonged crisis management without meaningful resolution risks escalating into uncontrollable conflict, emphasising the need to shift from managing conflicts to resolving them for sustainable peace.
'It has become imperative to move beyond conflict management towards conflict resolution," he said during a panel on regional crisis mechanisms. 'This will ensure sustainable peace."
'Given Indian policies, the absence of a crisis management mechanism may not give enough time for global powers to intervene and prevent escalation. They could be too late to stop the damage," Mirza cautioned.
Accusing India of avoiding dialogue on Kashmir, he said, 'When there is no crisis, Kashmir is never discussed. But it's central to peace in the region."
This comes as relations between the nuclear-armed neighbours have worsened, especially after Operation Sindoor — India's targeted military action reportedly aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure across the Line of Control.
The Shangri-La Dialogue, which took place from May 30 to June 1, gathered defense ministers and military chiefs from over 40 countries, with the spotlight shining brightly on India and Pakistan, highlighting the region's fragile security dynamics.

Census-2027 reignites delimitation row: ‘BJP plans to reduce Tamil Nadu's Lok Sabha seats,' alleges MK Stalin
The Union government has announced the dates of the long-delayed Census. The government said on Wednesday that the Census will be carried out in two phases before 1 March 2027. This time, the enumerators will collect caste details of residents along with the population numbers. This is happening for the first time since independence. The annoucement has, however, reopened the debate on deimitation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the centre of planning to reduce Tamil Nadu's parliamentary seats. The Census data is likely become the base for delimitation, women's reservation and one nation, one election. Stalin, the DMK chief, demanded an answer from the Union government over the timing for conducting a caste census, highlighting the constitutional mandate that delimitation must follow the census after 2026. "The Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first census after 2026. The BJP has now delayed the census to 2027, making their plan clear to reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary representation," Stalin posted on X. Stalin said that the warnings he issued earlier regarding delimitation are unfolding now. Stalin further attacked All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, accusing him of being "complicit in this betrayal" by siding with the BJP. As per the Ministry of Home Affairs statement on Population Census 2027, the reference date will be March 1. For the Union Territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be October 1, 2026. The full schedule will be notified on June 16. The reference date is actually a cut-off date, as the population of a country is usually declared as of a specific day or date. The official headcount, and the houselisting process precedes this cut-off date. The whole exercise might take up to another three years for the numbers to be finalised and released. In 2011, the last time the census was conducted, the entire process of houselisting and enumeration was completed before the reference date of March 1, 2011. Census enumeration and the final report released in the next few months is expected to open the doors for delimitation of Lok Sabha seats. The government has also promised to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament following the delimitation. Parties in the southern states fear that they will lose representation in Parliament if delimitation is conducted based on population enumeration of the latest Census. They argue that southern states have been able to control their populations better compared to northern states over the years and hence they will get less representation in the Parliament if seats are alloted based on population. Earlier this year, the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu even passed a resolution opposing Census-based delimitation. In March, Stalin-led a joint action committee (JAC) comprising the chief ministers of four states and political parties from three others called for a fair delimitation. The JAC urged the Centre to extend the freeze on the delimitation on parliamentary constituencies by another three decades. During the Emergency (June 25 1975 – March 21, 1977) the Congress government headed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhipassed the 42nd amendment, officially known as The Constitution (Forty-second amendment) Act, 1976. This meant that the 1971 census was used as the reference point until the first census after 2000. It basically froze the number of Lok Sabha seats until after the first Census taken after 2000. In 2002, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government extended the freeze for next 25 years until at least 2026. It is this freeze on the number of Lok Sabha seats that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is urging the Centre to extend for another 30 years. A 2019 analysis by Milan Vaishnaw and Jamie Hintson of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, projected that a delimitation exercise could see the overall strength of the Lok Sabha rising to 848, with Uttar Pradesh alone seeing its tally increase from the current 80 to 143 by 2026. In contrast, the analysis said, Tamil Nadu, which currently sends 39 representatives, could see the number rise to just 49. Kerala, which sends 20, would see no change at all. This is precisely the concern raised by states in the south. In February, Union minister Amit Shah assured that no southern state, including Tamil Nadu, will see a reduction in Parliamentary representation due to the delimitation exercise. 'I want to reassure the public of South India that Modi ji has kept your interest in mind to make sure that not even one seat is reduced pro rata,' Amit Shah said addressing a gathering in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. 'Whatever increase is there, Southern states will get a fair share, there is no reason to doubt this," he said. It's now clear that he has surrendered to Delhi's domination. The census, due in 2021, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Census 2027 is slated to be one of the most comprehensive data-gathering exercises undertaken by the Indian government. Census of India is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990.

'Unsuitable destination': Trump bars foreign students from coming to US to study at Harvard University; what next?
US President Donald Trump issued a proclamation suspending international visas for new Harvard University students, as announced by the White House on Wednesday. This action represents a significant intensification of efforts to prevent foreign students from attending this prestigious institution. The directive halts entry for new Harvard students under F, M, or J visa categories and instructs the Secretary of State to evaluate revoking existing visas for current students meeting specific criteria, according to the White House statement on Wednesday. Citing national security concerns, the White House expressed apprehension about Harvard's foreign connections. The administration criticised the university's alleged inadequate reporting of foreign student information, noting deficiencies in data submission for three students. The White House statement claimed Harvard either inadequately reports foreign student disciplinary records or insufficiently monitors these students. Additional criticisms included the university's handling of antisemitism and its continued emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has long warned that foreign adversaries take advantage of easy access to American higher education to steal information, exploit research and development, and spread false information, as per the White House. "Harvard has also developed extensive entanglements with foreign adversaries, receiving more than $150 million from China alone. In exchange, Harvard has, among other things, hosted Chinese Communist Party paramilitary members and partnered with China-based individuals on research that could advance China's military modernization," the White House said in a statement. "Harvard has failed to adequately address violent anti-Semitic incidents on campus, with many of these agitators found to be foreign students." it added. The President said that there are people who wants to go to Harvard but they can't get in because of foreign students. He also said that they are waiting for the foreign student lists from Harvard so that the administration can determine how many "radicalized lunatics, troublemakers all" should not be let back into the US. 'The students? Well, we want to have great students here. We just don't want students that are causing trouble. We want to have students. I want to have foreign students. We have people who want to go to Harvard and other schools, they can't get in because we have foreign students there. But I want to make sure that the foreign students are people that can love our country," he said. 'We are still waiting for the Foreign Student Lists from Harvard so that we can determine, after a ridiculous expenditure of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, how many radicalized lunatics, troublemakers all, should not be let back into our Country. Harvard is very slow in the presentation of these documents, and probably for good reason!' Trump added. This development came after US District Court Judge Allison Burroughs's recent ruling, which indefinitely prevented the Trump administration from modifying Harvard's international student visa programme. This ruling came shortly after the judge temporarily stopped the administration's attempt to revoke the university's authority to enrol international students.

Ex-MLA, Congress leader arrested for ‘derogatory comments' on PM Modi on social media
The Chhattisgarh Police have arrested a serving Congress leader and an ex-MLA for allegedly making 'objectionable' remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. The arrested people have been identified as Arun Tiwari, a 67-year-old ex-MLA formerly associated with the Congress, and Brijmohan Singh, a current Congress leader from Durg district. The arrests have been made in two separate cases. In the first case, Tiwari, a former MLA from Sipat in undivided Madhya Pradesh, was arrested for having made 'objectionable' remarks about the prime minister's estranged wife Jashodaben while speaking about 'Operation Sindoor' on social media. Tiwari, who is no longer with the Congress, was booked under sections section 296 (obscene act) and 352 (intentional insult) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the back of a complaint registered on June 2. 'Tiwari was produced before a magistrate court Wednesday and has been remanded to judicial custody. He will be in jail till he is granted bail,' a police officer said. In a similar but unrelated case, Congress leader Brijmohan Singh was arrested under sections 296 (obscene act) and 353 (public mischief) of the BNS for having posted 'abusive comments' on Modi on social media. He has been remanded in judicial custody. Reacting to the arrests, Sushil Anand Shukla, the communications head for the Congress in Chhattisgarh said: 'Arun Tiwari is no longer with the Congress party. Brijmohan ji is a good leader and I do not believe he can use such words. It is either a misunderstanding or it is a conspiracy by the BJP'. The development comes less than a month after Operation Sindoor — India's retaliatory strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam attacks in which 26 people, including a resident of Chhattisgarh's Raipur, was killed.
