Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid: Kounde strikes late in extra time to take the spoils in El Clasico cup final
They were made to wait until the 116th minute of play for confirmation, but Barcelona fans will tonight celebrate a 32nd Copa del Rey title as they beat Real Madrid 3-2 in a final rife with drama.
After regular time ended with two goals for either club, a laboured period of extra-time looked certain to deliver a penalty shootout, before Jules Kounde rifled a low shot home from 25 yards to put Barcelona back in front with no time for Los Blancos to react.
In a season where Barcelona had come out on top in both prior Clásicos, the onus was on Real to preserve their honour. The Derby atmosphere was tangible and the vitriol plentiful as the two sides played out a Clasico for the ages and Barcelona made it a hat-trick of wins over their most hated rivals this season.
Pedri opened the scoring in the first half with a wonderful strike, perfectly balancing power and placement as he drilled his shot well beyond Courtois.
That advantage would last through to half-time, at which stage Real woke up. Ancelotti introduced the big guns, adding Kylian Mbappe and Luka Modric, totally reversing the match's momentum as he did so.
Mbappe's ankle injury was clearly long forgotten as he caused Barcelona's back-line all sorts of problems with his pace and power. He scored a stunning free-kick with 20 minutes remaining, and could have added a second moments later if not for Pau Cubarsi's late block.
Just a few minutes later, though, it all looked to be over as Aurelien Tchouameni headed home from Luka Modric's corner. Barcelona were left bewildered, going from a place of total control to a goal behind in just seven minutes, and white ribbons were all but hung on the trophy.
Not if Lamine Yamal had anything to say about it. He looped a perfect pass over the top to put Ferran Torres through on goal - Courtois looked to claim it but was caught in no man's land, and the Spaniard finished into an empty net to force extra time.
There would be more drama before the final whistle, though. A Barcelona penalty would be overturned after a lengthy VAR check, with the aggrieved Raphinha eventually booked for simulation, and Vinicius would leave the field of play injured.
It was a level playing field heading into extra time, then. The first quarter of an hour came and went with little notable action. It seemed as though the same would be true in the second half, before Kounde's effort put Barca ahead at a crucial juncture.
There were ugly scenes after the 120th minute as an incensed Rudiger launched ice packs at referee Ricardo de Burgos, earning a red card for his troubles, but that would not affect the result.
Tonight, it will be the famous Blaugrana celebrating into the small hours. They will not forget this match in a hurry.

Sovereignty vs. Journalism in the Belmont gives horse racing a Kentucky Derby rematch
Horse racing is getting a Kentucky Derby rematch in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday to close out the Triple Crown. Derby winner Sovereignty and runner-up Journalism, who won the Preakness two weeks later, headline the field of eight in the Belmont. Add in Baeza, and the top three finishers from the first Saturday in May are involved. 'We're delighted to have the first three horses out of the Derby challenging each other again,' said Michael Banahan of Godolphin, which owns Sovereignty. 'It's a quality race. ... It should set up well, and may the best horse win.' Journalism opened as the 8-5 morning line favorite with Sovereignty the second choice at 4-1. Journalism won the Preakness run without Sovereignty after owners and trainer Bill Mott opted to give their horse extra rest. The intent was to focus on the Belmont rather than chase the chance for Sovereignty to become the sport's 14th Triple Crown champion and first since Justify in 2018. 'We felt that the best thing for him and to have a career through the whole season, and maybe into next year as well, was spacing his races a little bit,' Banahan said. 'Bill Mott, who's trained horses for us for a long time, is very judicious about where he wants to place his horses. And we put a lot of faith in the recommendations that he would give us.' Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism is the only horse running in all three legs of the Triple Crown this year. And he is the favorite for a reason. After going to Saratoga with his parents while growing up and getting into horse racing as a result, he's hoping to end his drought at his home track. 'We have a very unique time in history where there'll be three Belmont Stakes run total at Saratoga before you'll never see another one again,' Brown said. 'So, to be part of history with that, that would be extra special.'

Carlo Ancelotti's son Davide joins Brazil as an assistant coach
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's soccer confederation announced on Friday that Davide Ancelotti had joined his father, Carlo Ancelotti, as an assistant coach for the five-time World Cup champions. Davide Ancelotti started his career as an assistant coach in 2015, following his father at Napoli, Everton, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Brazil's soccer body said in a statement that the 35-year-old Davide Ancelotti's arrival 'represents another step in our search for innovation and technical improvements.' 'His international experience and training methodologies will be fundamental for the players' development and for the construction of an even more competitive team,' it said. Carlo Ancelotti's debut with Brazil at Ecuador on Thursday ended in a 0-0 draw , which kept the team in the fourth place in the South American World Cup qualifying standings . Davide Ancelotti initially followed in his father's footsteps as a professional footballer at AC Milan's youth team and then at Borgomanero, but he retired at the age 20 to work in management.
