'Kind and generous' mum, 21, found dead after inhaling laughing gas with chest infection
Young mum Kira Booth, 21, was discovered lifeless in her Burnley flat by her support worker in November last year - after she did laughing gas whilst battling a chest infection
A young mum was tragically found dead after inhaling laughing gas whilst fighting a chest infection, an inquest has concluded. Kira Booth, 21, was discovered lifeless in her Burnley flat by her support worker in November last year.
Her family said they were not aware she had been taking drugs until shortly before her death, though said it was more recreational as opposed to a dependency. Kira chose to leave home at a young age, but regularly kept in touch with her five siblings and her parents, the family said.
They described the young mum as a "very kind and generous" person, who loved swimming, gymnastics, football, and dancing. Evidence was read into the record at Preston Coroner's Court by coroner Kate Bissett from Kira's mum, Carla Booth. She said Kira's struggle with mental health and with the rules led to her leaving the family home.
Kira had a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and had been sectioned a number of times under the Mental Health Act, Lancashire Live reports. She had lived in a mother and baby unit since giving birth, and then moved into her flat in Burnley, Lancashire. Around July last year, she told a social worker that she had been hearing voices, which led to her baby being taken away, and she had access to her child three times a week. In November, alarm bells began to ring for Kira's mum when she noticed her daughter had been inactive on social media for 24 hours, which was unusual.
Police confirmed later that day that Kira had died in her flat. Detective Inspector Steven Slater, the senior investigating officer in the case, told the inquest there was no evidence of any third-party involvement or the mum being injured. He added that a large number of nitrous oxide containers were found inside the property, including one on the floor near her bed, one down the back of a sofa, and a further 18 packaged up ready to be thrown out.
A number of tablet strips were also found - some empty - as well as two small snap bags, which the officer said potentially could have contained cocaine. According to a CT post-mortem exam, there was no trauma related to Kira's cause of death. A toxicology report also showed there was recent cocaine use, but no other compounds were detected.
Ms Bissett said nitrous oxide cannot be detected by toxicology examinations as it leaves the body upon death, adding there was no evidence Kira had intended to take her own life. She said Kira had a "strong will to live" and that her records showed she "worked through her difficulties."
She said: "Kira wasn't someone who had given up on normal life and was engaging in all sorts of drugs. She was someone who managed her problems by having a positive time experimenting with substances. She was not a habitual user." Ms Bissett recorded a conclusion of misadventure, saying: "Kira Booth died on November 12, 2024, at her home address, having consumed nitrous oxide whilst suffering with a chest infection."

Instant karma! Moment robber who attacked woman pathetically screams in terror as police dog clamps its jaws on his arm
A violent thug screamed in terror as a police dog clamped its powerful jaws around his arm just moments after he launched a brutal assault on a woman walking to work. Leslie Sedgewick, 44, lay in wait before preying on his terrified victim in a sickening early morning robbery in Middlesbrough. The thug pounced from behind as the woman, in her 30s, made her way to work around 6.30am on December 20 last year – just five days before Christmas. He punched and kicked her to the ground with shocking force before snatching her mobile phone and fleeing. Despite suffering horrific injuries – including a suspected broken nose and a chipped tooth – the brave woman managed to escape and raise the alarm with Cleveland Police. Officers from the force's Dog Support Unit sprang into action and began scouring the area for the attacker. Not long after, PC Lee Whitehouse and police dog Kira spotted a man matching the description nearby. When officers challenged him, Sedgewick made a run for it – but didn't get far. He was dramatically taken down in a garage compound by PD Kira, who wasted no time latching onto his arm with her powerful bite. Bodycam footage shows the moment the cowardly thug screamed in terror, desperately pleading for the dog to let go. At one point, he pathetically squeals: 'I'm sorry!' Police later discovered Sedgewick had changed his clothes and dumped the woman's belongings at a nearby house in an effort to cover his tracks. He admitted robbery and was jailed for four years and five months at Teesside Crown Court on Monday. In a heartbreaking statement to police, the woman revealed: 'I was petrified', and confessed she wondered 'whether I was going to die'. She added: 'In the immediate aftermath, the woman hid her injuries from her child 'so she didn't see and ask what had happened to me'.' The lasting trauma of the attack has left her constantly looking over her shoulder. She said: 'I am constantly in fear that I don't know who is around me or what they are capable of doing.' Detective Constable Pierce Ditchburn, who led the investigation, said: 'This was a terrifying attack on a lone woman early in the morning, just a few days before Christmas. 'Leslie Sedgewick targeted the woman for her mobile phone and has been attempting to steal a bike in the moments leading up to this attack. No one should ever have to be afraid to go anywhere alone.' 'I'm pleased that Sedgewick is now behind bars, and hope that this justice can help provide some comfort to the victim in this case.'

Sad reason woman stole bus and went on 7-mile journey before spitting on cops
Shazma Ansar spat at three officers after stealing the bus and driving for seven miles, smashing into parked cars - a court heard she was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia A knife-wielding woman stole a bus from an airport and took it on a seven-mile journey which ended in a smash with parked cars for a tragic reason. Shazma Ansar, 29, used the blade to threaten driver Mark Lewis and demanded he take her to London from Birmingham shortly after midnight. He went to get police for support but found the bus had gone when he returned. But she was eventually arrested on St. Benedicts Road, Small Heath, after smashing into stationary cars and wedging the bus between vehicles when she was trying to turn around. In custody she also spat at three different officers. Birmingham Crown Court heard Ansar, previously from Shard End, suffered paranoid schizophrenia and had not been taking her medication at the time. On Wednesday she was sentenced to a hospital order with restrictions under the Mental Health Act, reports BirminghamLive. She admitted threatening someone with a knife, aggravated vehicle taking, three charges of assaulting an emergency worker as well as driving without a licence and insurance. Ansar had boarded the bus on Timberley Lane, Shard End, shortly after midnight on September 24 last year. She asked to go to Small Heath but when Mr Lewis said he was going to Birmingham Airport she agreed to go there instead. Prosecutor Sally Cairns said: "When they arrived the defendant was the only passenger. She lay down across the back seats. Mr Lewis drove the bus to a stand at Birmingham Airport and displayed the 'out of service' sign. He asked the defendant if she was going to leave. She demanded to be taken to London. "Mr Lewis told her he couldn't do that, but he could take her back to where she got on. The defendant walked down the bus, close to the driver's side, with a kitchen knife in her hand. She said 'if you don't take me to London I will kill you', swearing at Mr Lewis." Mr Lewis agreed and convinced Ansar to let him go to the toilet. Instead, he alerted police at the airport but when they returned the bus had gone. It was next spotted on Coventry Road where Ansar turned off into St. Benedicts Road which had cars parked on either side. Ms Cairns said: "As it drove down the bus clipped wing mirrors. The defendant turned left and tried to turn the rear of the bus. It collided with a parked car and pushed that car into another car. The defendant carried on driving dragging parked cars caught on the bus. She tried to manoeuvre the bus by doubled parked cars but the bus became lodged." Police arrived to find Ansar beeping the horn, 'acting bizarrely' and 'asking for a Lamborghini'. She was arrested but later on that morning she spat in the face of a detention officer after asking to be let go. She also spat at two police constables after being taken to Sandwell Hospital having complained of chest pains. Psychiatrists have confirmed she suffers from paranoid schizophrenia with symptoms including hearing voices and acting upon them, the court was told. Ansar is currently being treated at Chadwick Lodge secure mental health hospital in Milton Keynes. Recorder Rebecca Wade agreed to the recommendation for a hospital order with restrictions, concluding Ansar had a 'lack of insight' into her mental illness and offending as well as taking into account her 'persistent history of none-compliance with treatment'. She added she posed a risk of causing serious harm to the public if not detained.

All we know as girl, 13, fights for life after fire kills mum and three kids
Four people tragically died in a house fire in Brent, northwest London, in the early hours of Saturday morning - here's everything we know so far as one girl remains in hospital fighting for her life A community has been left in mourning after a fire ripped through a home and claimed the lives of a mother and her three children - with one girl still fighting for her life. Neighbours living in Brent, northwest London, awoke to huge flames in the early hours of Saturday morning. Emergency services raced to Tillett Close in Stonebridge shortly after 1am. A mother, aged 43, along with her 15-year-old daughter and two sons - aged eight and four - were sadly discovered dead. An elderly family member, aged 70, and a teenage girl were hospitalised for treatment. Police and locals have since come forward with further information about the family who died. Police name victims Police have named the mother who was killed in the fire as Nusrat Usman. Her deceased children were identified as Maryam Mikaiel, 15, Musa Usman, eight, and Raees Usman, four. A woman in her 70s was taken to hospital but has since been released. A 13-year-old girl remains in hospital in a critical condition. Hero neighbour recalls terrifying moment A tradesman who saved a grandmother and her granddaughter from the fire recalled the moment he ran into the burning building. Victor Pedra, 33, cut his hand as he broke a window on the lower floor to reach the trapped family at around 1.15am. He managed to create access for the nan and girl but couldn't get to the mother and her youngest son who were on the second floor. He told Mail Online: 'The flames were so strong and there was smoke everywhere. I couldn't get to the second floor where the mum and her youngest son was. I couldn't sleep that night as I just kept hearing the screams from inside the house.' His partner Leticia Maria, 31, added: 'The little girl managed to escape and was covered in black stuff from the smoke. She looked about 12-years-old. No one knows what caused the fire but you could hear explosions like things were popping." Man arrested after fire The Met Police confirmed a 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. He has since been bailed and was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act. Superintendent Steve Allen said: 'Despite the efforts of the emergency services, I can confirm a woman and three of her children died at the scene. 'A further two members of the same family were taken to hospital and continue to receive treatment. The wider family have been informed, and officers will continue to support them at this incredibly difficult time. I recognise the significant impact this incident has had on the community.' Mum was pregnant Neighbours have revealed the mother was expecting another baby. Locals also described the family as "nice" and said they had lived in Brent for a long time. Speaking to the MailOnline, one neighbour said: "A Somali family lived next door. They came out through the back because the front door was stuck. I brought the children into my house. They were distraught and shaken up." A fundraiser has since been launched to support the rest of the family. Donations reached £15,000 at the time of publishing. To further donate, visit here.
