Forgotten English player swapped Premier League for Barcelona before Marcus Rashford
Marcus Rashford is already being widely described as the first English player to represent Barcelona since Gary Lineker - but that is forgetting a now Championship regular who headed to Camp Nou with a reputation as the latest midfield wunderkind.
Marcus McGuane arrived in Spain from Arsenal in 2018 but made just one first-team appearance during two tricky years spent mostly with the La Liga giants' reserves - coming off the bench in a Catalan Super Cup game against Espanyol in March 2018.
The now Bristol City player, 26, suggested last season that he was too inexperienced to handle the pressure of his big move when he left Arsenal in January 2018. Having arrived in Spain he had a £25m release clause tagged on and was being talked up as a future Three Lions star.
"I feel like when I was a little bit younger I'd been given quite a lot early and there was high expectations of me and maybe I wasn't, I'm not sure, mentally ready for everything," McGuane told BBC Radio Bristol last season.
"I wasn't in the right mind frame to be able to deal with everything at certain times. I feel like I've grown, I've learned my trade. I've had real tough, difficult times in football and I feel like it just makes you more grateful for everything you do have and definitely makes you mentally stronger so I wouldn't change it for the world."
Rashford's loan move from Manchester United was confirmed yesterday evening with the forward's deal including an option for the deal to be made permanent next summer.
United head coach Ruben Amorim's relationship with Rashford broke down last December when he was cut from the United first-team squad.
He was then sent out on loan to Aston Villa in January and scored four goals and six assists in 17 appearances. But when Villa decided against making that deal permanent in June, Rashford set his sights on Barca.
Barca will pay the entirety of his wages after Rashford agreed to take a 15 per cent pay cut from his £325,000-a-week salary. They can also sign him for €30million (£26m) next summer if he does well.
Earlier this summer, United made it clear that they would happily sell Rashford to whichever club would stump up £40m. His contract with the club runs until June 2028, so their asking price wasn't outrageous, especially considering they believed he was worth £100m in April 2024 when Paris Saint-Germain were sniffing around.

'Worries me' - Rio Ferdinand reveals concern over Man Utd's £69m transfer target
Rio Ferdinand says he would be 'worried' about Benjamin Sesko's lack of Premier League experience should he join Manchester United and would rather see the club prioritise a move for Ollie Watkins. United have bolstered Ruben Amorim's misfiring attack by bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo – from Wolves and Brentford respectively – for a combined transfer fee of over £133million this summer. But the Red Devils are determined to further strengthen with the addition of an out-and-out centre-forward before the transfer deadline following a disappointing season for both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee last term. Viktor Gyokeres had been identified as United's primary target on the back of another barnstorming campaign with Sporting, in which he scored 54 goals in 52 games, but the prolific Swede decided to turn down a switch to Old Trafford in favour of a move to Arsenal. Forced to go back to the drawing board and explore other avenues, the latest reports claim United have narrowed their search down to just two players, namely Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig attacker Sesko. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. While Nicolas Jackson has also been tentatively linked in recent weeks, United are understood to have been put off by Chelsea's asking price and have now ruled out a bid to sign the Senegal international. Weighing up the pros and cons of United's potential options up front, Ferdinand said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel: 'If you get Watkins, you've got guaranteed 15-20 goals really and then you've got that with Cunha and you've got that with Mbeumo. 'Not completely guaranteed, but you've got double figures all the way up front. 'Bear in mind, we were 16th in terms of goals scored last season and these lot are getting you minimum 40 goals between them.' While Ferdinand is not writing off Sesko coming in and succeeding at the Theatre of Dreams, he believes the move would be far riskier than a deal for Watkins. Pointing to Hojlund's struggles since arriving in English football, Ferdinand said: 'The only difference is that Rasmus came in and had inexperience around him in terms of [Alejandro] Garnacho one side and Amad [Diallo] the other, for instance, most of the time. 'If Sesko comes in, he's got two players that have played Premier League, scored goals in the Premier League and backed up by Bruno [Fernandes] so I think it's a different dynamic that he comes into. 'But the uncertainty worries me a little bit. Can he adapt to this league?' Ferdinand continued: 'I wanted a striker with experience so he wouldn't be my first-choice, obviously, even now. 'But if Manchester United buy him and Newcastle go and get a number nine, does that mean [Alexander] Isak stays at Newcastle and Liverpool don't get Isak? 'Liverpool's transfer window has been nothing short of exceptional so far.' More Trending Ferdinand sypathises with United's current hierarchy, who he feels have been 'hampered by the past' when it comes to getting transfer deals over the line. 'They're hampered by the past,' the legendary ex-United and England defender went on. 'It's going to take time and it's one of the things [Omar] Berrada, Jason Wilcox and the manager will be really frustrated with, the goings on that happened before they got here are really hampering things in the recruitment area because of the high prices they've paid, the high wages they've paid. 'They've paid over the odds for most of these guys so it's difficult to move someone if he's on £200,000-a-week and his current value in the market is £100,000-a-week. Do you think he's going to go anywhere? I wouldn't.' Spurs assessing extent of Destiny Udogie and Kota Takai pre-season injuries
Left-back Udogie was withdrawn following the warm-up ahead of Spurs' friendly against Luton on Saturday, and then did not travel with the rest of the squad to Hong Kong for the week-long pre-season tour of Asia. Spurs face European champions Paris St Germain in the Super Cup on August 13 ahead of starting the new Premier League season at home to promoted Burnley. Frank, though, is likely to have to do without Italy international Udogie and revealed Japan defender Takai had picked up a foot issue. 'Destiny got a knee injury (in the warm-up at Luton on Saturday) that we are assessing at the moment, that has kept him out of this pre-season tour,' Frank said at a press conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday. 'Kota got a plantar fascia injury, unfortunately we don't know the scale of it – weeks.' The travelling squad for our pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Korea has been confirmed 📋 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) July 27, 2025 There was, though, more positive news on England forward Dominic Solanke, who missed the Luton friendly with a minor ankle issue, but has made the trip to Asia. Spurs are preparing for Thursday's north London derby against Arsenal at the Kai Tak Stadium before heading to South Korea to play Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday. 'Dom is looking much better, progressing,' Frank told SPURSPLAY. 'We will see if it is too early for Arsenal, but we are positive about him. 'Madders (James Maddison) is looking better and better, could also be too early for Arsenal, again, we will see. Rodri (Rodrigo Bentancur) is back from illness, so that's good.' Former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou had to deal with several injury setbacks last season, which saw their Premier League season tail off amid a successful Europa League campaign. Frank, though, feels there can only be so much done to try to mitigate against picking up more fitness problems down the line. 'I know about the injury issues, but it is a problem for every club in the world,' Frank said at a press conference. 'We have a good and long pre-season so we can push the players, we are aware how we want to train, we need to be aligned on how we want to play and train. 'There are gym sessions, recovery and the ability to compete in all tournaments. We are aware and we will make a few adjustments so we can compete.' A post shared by Son HeungMin(손흥민)🇰🇷 (@hm_son7) Frank again addressed issues over the future of captain Son Heung-min, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract and attracted interest from Los Angeles FC. 'Right now, Sonny is here and I'm very happy for that,' the Dane said. 'He has trained well. I said in the last press conference that he is showing great character. 'He played the last two friendlies. He is in the squad, he will train today (Tuesday). What I am focusing on is he is a Tottenham player.'
