Natasha Cloud and Sabrina Ionescu lift the Liberty to an 89-79 win over the Sparks

NBC Sports18 hours ago
NEW YORK — Natasha Cloud scored 11 of her 23 points in the third quarter and sparked a huge run to lead the New York Liberty to an 89-79 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night.
Breanna Stewart added 17 points and 14 rebounds and Sabrina Ionescu had 20 points for New York (12-5).
The defending champion Liberty trailed 53-42 midway through the third before Cloud and Ionescu got going. Cloud's three-point play sparked a 13-0 run and then Ionescu scored 10 straight points for New York to give the Liberty a 63-59 advantage.
New York extended its lead to 69-59 by the end of the period. Los Angeles (5-13) cut it to five with 3:30 left before Leonie Fiebich hit a 3-pointer to seal the win.
The Liberty's win coupled with Phoenix's loss to Dallas made New York coach Sandy Brondello one of the two All-Star coaches. Minnesota's Cheryl Reeve will coach the other All-Star squad because the Lynx and Liberty have the best records in the league at the cutoff date to name coaches for the All-Star Game in Indianapolis on July 19.
Dearica Hamby scored 25 points to lead Los Angeles, which got a boost with the return of Rae Burrell. She saw her first action since injuring her knee in the opener. She checked in late in the first quarter and played 12 minutes, finishing with five points.
The game also marked the debut of Julie Vanloo, whom the Sparks picked up off waivers two hours before tip-off. She came in early in the second quarter and played two minutes.
New York was still missing star forward Jonquel Jones, who has been sidelined with a sprained ankle. Jones told reporters on Wednesday that she's progressing well, but didn't want to put a timetable on her return. The Liberty welcomed back Fiebich, who had been playing for Germany in the EuroBasket tournament over the last few weeks.
Los Angeles built a 41-37 halftime lead behind 10 points from Hamby. Stewart had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Liberty guard Marine Johannes had two standout plays in the first half. She hit a 3-pointer off one foot as the shot clock ran out, and later made a no-look, behind-the-back pass to Stewart for a layup.

Mets' Kodai Senga to Make Rehab Start Saturday; José Buttó Goes on 15-Day IL

New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga, sidelined since June 12 by a strained right hamstring, is to start a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Binghamton. He is to throw 60 to 65 pitches, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, and soon could return to New York's injury-ravaged rotation. "We'll see how it goes tomorrow and then see how he responds, and we'll have a decision after that," Mendoza said. Elsewhere, Mets reliever José Buttó was put on the 15-day injured list Friday with an unspecified illness, the team's 13th pitcher on the IL. "We're not going to get into the details of it out of respect of Buttó, but we don't anticipate this being long term," Mendoza said. "We expect him to be back right after the All-Star break." Mendoza said he didn't anticipate that Buttó will need to go on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. A 27-year-old right-hander, Buttó is 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the last a two-inning outing at Pittsburgh last Saturday. New York recalled right-hander Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse. Brought up for the fourth time this season, the 34-year-old right-hander has made four appearances for the Mets. New York didn't have an update on reliever Dedniel Núñez, who was put on the IL on Thursday because of a sprained right elbow sprain and could require Tommy John surgery for the second time. "He's going to visit a doctor next week because of a holiday weekend," Mendoza said. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Warriors near decision on Jonathan Kuminga, courting free agent Al Horford

The games for the California Classic start Saturday at Chase Center as free agency continues in the NBA. Even if it doesn't seem like that for the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors haven't made a transaction this week, though free agents are permitted to negotiate with other clubs, as they sort through forward Jonathan Kuminga 's restricted free agency and wait for free-agent center Al Horford's decision. Kuminga is free to secure an offer sheet that the Warriors would then be permitted to match or negotiate with them a contract extension. There's also the potential of a sign-and-trade. Horford is a prime target for the Warriors, league sources confirmed to the Chronicle, but the five-time All-Star big man — most recently of the Boston Celtics and reportedly also considering retirement — isn't expected to make a decision this weekend. The NBA's transaction moratorium lifts at 9 a.m. Sunday and the Warriors are working with a $170.5-million payroll (for nine players) against a luxury tax line of $187.9 million and restrictive (for roster building) aprons $195.9 million and $207.8 million respectively. A team source told the Chronicle they're 'still working through things.' Kuminga, a bouncy forward who has played four seasons for Golden State, is clear to negotiate at his own pace and mine the market as he sees fit. Interested suitors reportedly include the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings, who offered the Warriors second-round draft picks with guard Devin Carter and forward Dario Saric, according to The Athletic. In a prospective sign-and-trade transaction for Kuminga, The Athletic reported, the Warriors would covet a talented young player with a first-round draft pick. Kuminga, 22, was tendered a qualifying offer (one-year, $7.9 million with a $22.9 million cap hold) to trigger restricted free agency after 258 games for Golden State in which he averaged 12.5 points (on 50.7% shooting, 33.2% 3-point shooting) and 4.6 rebounds. He's part of a restricted free-agent class that includes Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey, Philadelphia 76ers wing Quentin Grimes and Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas, all of whom played prominent roles last season for their respective clubs, but for which there has been a slow-moving market so far. In 47 games in 2024-25, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points (45.4% shooting, 30.5% 3-point shooting) and 4.6 rebounds while battling a severe midseason right ankle sprain. He also averaged 24.3 points (55.4% shooting, 38.9% 3-point shooting) his last four playoff games (Western Conference semifinal losses to the Minnesota Timberwolves) despite initially being left out of from Golden State' postseason rotation. Speaking after the NBA draft about Kuminga's restricted free agency, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said 'we'd like to get something figured out as soon as possible, but (it can drag and) that's the way it goes I think sometimes in restricted free agency. Not going to stress about it too much, but I think the main thing is making the right decision, figuring the whole thing out, whether that's day one or day ten or whatever it is. Got to be prepared to take it as far as it goes.' Horford is the top remainning available free-agent center, and holds career averages of 12.9 points (50.9% shooting, 37.7% 3-point shooting), 7.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 blocks over 18 seasons. He played the last four seasons for the Celtics, serving as a part-time starter on a team that winning the 2023-24 NBA title. At 39, he makes an impact on both ends, offensively a connective floor spacer (40.9% from 3-point range the last three seasons) and defensively a positional low-post anchor who situationally switches onto guards and wings. The Warriors also have interest in Damina Lillard, the star guard who is soon to be a free agent, a league source confirmed. Lillard will be rehabilitating a torn left Achilles sustained in April while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers. The Bucks are waiving (and stretching) Lillard's contract so they can sign big man Myles Turner away from the Pacers. The Oakland native and nine-time All-Star averaged 24.9 points (44.8% shooting, 37.6% 3-point shooting), 4.7 rebounds and 7.1 assists in 2024-25, his second season with Milwaukee. A career 25.1-points-per-game scorer in 13 seasons, Lillard is open to signing with a suitor this offseason, but he isn't in a rush to make a decision, per veteran NBA reporter Chris Haynes.

(AP Photo/Angelina Katsanis) NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Luke Weaver in the seventh inning, leading the New York Mets over the Yankees 6-5 on Friday in a Subway Series opener between teams that faded badly after strong starts. Juan Soto hit a two-run homer among three hits against his former team and Brett Baty connected for a solo shot in the sixth off Ian Hamilton that cut the Yankees' lead to 5-4. Advertisement Weaver (1-3) relieved with two outs in the seventh and walked Pete Alonso. McNeil drove a changeup into the right-field upper deck at Citi Field, sending the Yankees to their fifth straight loss during a slide that dropped them from the AL East lead. Jasson Domínguez ended a 32-game homerless streak, hitting a pair of opposite-field homers and driving in three runs. Domínguez and Judge hit back-to-back homers starting the game, Judge's 32nd this year, and Cody Bellinger also went deep for the Yankees. Huascar Brazobán (4-2) pitched a hitless seventh and Reed Garrett got six outs for his third save, helped by an outstanding defensive play from McNeil at second base in the ninth. The Mets were a big league-best 45-24 on June 12 and the Yankees 42-25 but the Mets are 6-14 since and the Yankees 6-15. Advertisement With 13 Mets pitchers on the injured list, 28-year-old right-hander Justin Hagenman made his first major league start and allowed four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Yankees starter Marcus Stroman gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings against his former team. Soto hit his 21st home run this season in the first after Domínguez misplayed Brandon Nimmo's leadoff double. Key moment McNeil's homer came on the fourth of six changeups Weaver threw him. Key stat Weaver has allowed homers in three straight appearances. After compiling a 1.05 ERA in his first 24 games, he has a 13.50 ERA in seven outings since returning from a strained left hamstring. Up next Yankees LHP Carlos Rodón (9-5, 2.95 ERA) and Mets RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 6.00) are scheduled to start Saturday. ___ AP MLB:
